1 First Presbyterian Church October 1, :00 a.m Embodying Christ s inclusive love with heart, mind, and service

2 Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Introit Praise, praise, praise the Lord! Praise God s holy name. Alleluia! (hymn 390) *Call to Worship Come, let us worship God our Maker, who created the world and all that is in it! God welcomes all, strangers and friends! Let us join hearts with Christians around the world to feast at the Table of grace! God s love is strong and it never ends! *Hymn 317 *Invitation to Confession In Christ There Is No East or West *Prayer of Confession (time for silent confession) Almighty God, you have called us to one table, but we have pursued our own course. You have promised us the abundance of all creation, but in our greed, and in our envy, the world goes without. You have promised us the bread of life itself, but in our pride, and in our arrogance, the world goes hungry. You have promised us the waters of peace and justice, but in our violence, and in our discord, the world goes thirsty. And now we are famished, too, Lord. Have mercy on us. Transform us and re-shape us as servants of your righteousness; through Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) October 1, 2017 World Communion Sunday *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. *Sung Response (hymn 59, sing twice) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is your faithfulness, O Lord, great is your faithfulness. 2

3 Time with the Children Sharon Youngs Children, second grade and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps. First Reading Psalm 78 (selected verses) Anthem Lord, You Call Us Haugen, Burkhardt Lord, You call us as Your people, out of darkness into light. You created and redeemed us, made us precious in Your sight. Give us faith to trust You boldly and to love You steadfastly. By Your Spirit may we ever faithful to our callings be. Lord, You call us as disciples, walking on Your pilgrim way. Crucified and risen Savior, You are with us every day. Give us wisdom; give us courage as You teach us patiently. By Your Spirit may we ever faithful to our callings be. Lord, You send us to the harvest in Your Great Commission s call, Reaching out to all the nations, bringing life and hope to all. Give us boldness and compassion; bless us with Your eyes to see. By Your Spirit may we ever faithful to our callings be. Lord, You call us to new ventures by a pathway yet unknown. Though we cannot see the ending, we will follow You alone, Knowing that Your hand is guiding, and You love us faithfully. By Your Spirit may we ever faithful to our callings be. Lord, You call us as Your people, joined in faith we sing Your praise: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Alleluias to You raise. Hold us in Your gracious power, blessed Holy Trinity, That rejoicing we will ever faithful to our callings be. Second Reading Exodus 17:1-7 Sermon Is God Among Us or Not? Sharon Youngs *Affirmation of Faith (adapted from the Confession of Belhar) We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the unity of the communion of saints of the entire human family. We believe that this unity of the people of God must be manifest and active, in that we love one another; that we give ourselves willingly and joyfully to one another, that we share one baptism together, that we eat of one bread and drink of one cup together, and that we confess one name and one Lord, for one cause and with one hope, which is the height, breadth, depth, and love of Christ, forever and ever. Amen. The Sacrament of Holy Communion Hymn 526 Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ Invitation to the Lord s Table Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. 3

4 Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O God our creator and with all the faithful of every time and place who forever sing to the glory of your name: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Indeed, blessed are you, O Christ, for risking yourself among us... Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us the one who prays even for us, the one who first taught us to pray, saying: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread, Pouring of the Cup Sharing of the Elements [Communion is served by intinction. You are invited to come forward, take a piece of bread (all gluten-free), dip it into the chalice, and then eat it.] Prayer after Communion Love beyond all comprehension, we thank you for refreshing us at your Table. Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and send us into the world in courage and peace, through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen. Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts Offertory Abide With Me *Doxology (hymn 708) and Prayer of Dedication We give you but your own in all we are or do; All that we have is yours alone; a trust, O God, from you. *Hymn 756 *Charge and Blessing O God of Every Nation *Congregational Response (see inside back cover of hymnal) Postlude Like a River Glorious Irish Blessing Today s flowers are given by Judy Greeson to the glory of God and in memory of her grandparents, Roy & Zola Greeson and Merle & Will Cobb. 4
