1 First Presbyterian Church May 19, :00 a.m. God s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others. Blessed with God s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity. By Jesus Christ s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.

2 Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Introit As the wind song through the trees, as the stirring of the breeze, so it is with the Spirit of God, As the heart made strangely warm, as the voice within the storm, so it is with the Spirit of God. Never seen, ever known where this wind has blown bringing life, bringing power to the world, As the dancing tongues of fire, as the soul s most deep desire so it is with the Spirit of God. *Call to Worship The Spirit of God moves among us, binding us in covenant with faithful people of every time and place. The Spirit moves within us, empowering us to proclaim the gospel to all people. The Spirit moves through us, making us channels of God s love. As we gather to worship, we open ourselves to the Spirit of the living God made known to us in Jesus Christ. Come, Holy Spirit, come! *Hymn 128 *Call to Confession On Pentecost They Gathered *Prayer of Confession Holy God, you set us ablaze with amazement and joy, and you open our paths to new visions. Yet we confess our dull and shortsighted ways. We have done the very things we would avoid, and what you desire, we have not done. Forgive us, Lord. By your purifying fire, transform our lives. Guide us into honesty and compassion, so that, filled with your peace, our dreams and visions may be one with yours; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. (time for silent confession) And let God's people say: *Assurance of Pardon FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) May 19, 2013 Day of Pentecost Amen. *Gloria Patri Hymn 577 Avery & Marsh *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. 2

3 Anthem Let Thy Holy Presence Come Upon Us Tchesnokov/Hopson Time with the Children Children, five years and younger, are invited to activity time in the Children s Library, upstairs in the Education Building. First Reading Gen. 11:1-9 Psalm 104 (see insert) Second Reading Eph. 2:11-22 Hopson Sermon The Church that s on the Turnpike Sharon Youngs (with inspiration from Dr. Seuss) *Affirmation of Faith (from A Declaration of Faith, The Book of Confessions) We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! Amen. *Hymn 504 The Sacrament of Holy Communion Draw Us in the Spirit s Tether Invitation to the Lord s Table Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right and our greatest joy. Breaking of the Bread, Pouring of the Cup 3

4 Sharing of the Elements (Baptized children and all who confess Jesus Christ as Lord as Savior are welcomed to the Lord s Table. If your tradition permits, you are welcomed to share this meal with us. If you are uncomfortable doing so, you are invited to use this time for prayer and reflection. Communion is served by intinction today. You are invited to come forward to receive a serving of bread, dip the bread into the chalice, and then eat the bread. Gluten free communion bread is available.) Prayer after Communion For the nourishment at this Table, we give you thanks, O God. May the sustenance from this meal and the presence of your Spirit embolden us to be your faithful people in this world; through Christ we pray. Amen. Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts *Doxology Hymn 592 *Prayer of Dedication Recognition of Graduates *Hymn 319 *Charge and Benediction Spirit *Congregational Response Hymn 325, verse 5 Spirit Divine, attend our prayers; Make a lost world your home.
