1 First Presbyterian Church May 21, :00 a.m. God s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others Blessed with God s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity. By Jesus Christ s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.

2 Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Introit Christ has risen and forever lives to challenge and to change all whose lives are messed or mangled, all who find religion strange. Christ is risen, Christ is present making us what he has been - evidence of transformation in which God is known and seen. *Call to Worship (from Psalm 66) Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed! Alleluia! Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth; Let all creation sing the glory of God s name. Let us worship God! *Hymn 234 *Invitation to Confession Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain *Prayer of Confession Loving God, we confess that we do not always keep your commandments. We fail to love you, and we neglect to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are quick to judge others, while being slow to see our own shortcomings. Forgive us, Lord. Reorder our priorities, so that we might be more faithful to you in our words and our deeds; in the name of the risen Christ we pray. (time for silent confession) And let God s people say: Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) May 21, 2017 Sixth Sunday of Easter 2

3 *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. *Sung Response We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. Time with the Children Mike Hilliard Children are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps. First Reading 1 Peter 3:13-16 Anthem Sing Forth God s Glory Hopson Second Reading Acts 17:22-31 Sermon User Friendly Sharon Youngs *Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC) We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen. Call to Prayer (hymn 240, refrain; first time choir, second time all) Alleluia, alleluia! Give thanks to the risen Lord. Alleluia, alleluia! Give praise to his name. Prayers of the People, with The Lord s Prayer (ecumenical version) { Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. 3

5 Welcome to First Presbyterian Church (FPC)! No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. We hope you feel the love that is present and our joy in having you with us. Please join us for refreshments in the fellowship hall following worship. Nursery care is available in the Education building. Ask any of the ushers to direct you, if needed. Hearing assistance units and large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Audio recordings of sermons and more information on FPC are at fpcor.org. Please call the church office ( ) for audio recordings of the entire service. WORSHIP NOTES Today is the sixth Sunday in the Easter season, which extends 50 days until Pentecost (June 4). Our call to worship of Christ is risen! reminds us that Easter extends beyond one day. We also continue to sing Easter hymns until Pentecost. Katherine Hankey wrote the text for our final hymn today, I Love to Tell the Story. While recovering from a serious illness in 1866, she wrote a long poem about the story of Christ in multiple parts. The text of this hymn was most likely taken from the second part of the poem. William G. Fischer wrote the tune HANKEY and the words to the refrain, and this was published in 1869 in Joyful Songs, Nos. 1 to 3. Later publications including this hymn were used in crusades by Ira Sankey and Dwight L. Moody, which helped it become the popular hymn it is today. As the Sunday school year ends, we take time this morning to thank our Sunday school teachers for their faithful service: Anne Backus, Deb Bostick, Irene Darko, Linda Fall, Dale Hadden, Pete Johnson, Margaret Ann King, Dallas Stults, Peggy Terpstra, and Martina Ward. We also are grateful for our acolytes: Andre Darko, Rebecca Davenport, Amelia Everitt, Bert Everitt, Jarred Julien, Avery Myers, Nathan Myers, Maddie Stone, Megan Stone, River Tilley, and Willow Tilley. Thank you to Teresa Fulcher for coordinating this program! TODAY S WORSHIP VOLUNTEERS Liturgist: Kathy Layendecker Acolytes: Bert Everitt, Nathan Myers Time with Children: Mike Hilliard First Steps: Chris Black, Tiffany Murray Sound Guild: Dale Hadden Ushers: Richard Alexander, Priscilla Campbell, Irene Darko, Linda Fall, Bonnie Murray, Shirley Sauls, Jim Tonne Counters: Jim Campbell, Jim Tonne Flowers: Don Spong & Janet Swift Fellowship Hosts: Bonnie & Syd Murray Open/Close: Mike Hilliard, Dave Mullins Thank you to John Purifoy for playing the piano for us today! Today is Wills Emphasis Sunday. Faithful stewardship of your God-given resources includes making choices to give toward making a better future for those you care about. If you don t have a will, please make one. FPC s ministry is made possible through our gifts now. But the church might not be here if it weren t for the generosity of those who came before us and included the church in their wills. We ll hear about some of those saints today. Including FPC in your will is a way to ensure that the ministries you care about will continue well beyond your life. See the insert in your bulletin for more information.
