2 United Methodist History Kim Childs will lead this class starting Wednesday October 23 rd at 7:30 A wonderful opportunity to learn all about our heritage as Methodists. Learn about John and Charles Wesley, the history of Methodism, some of our hymns and much, much more!! The first Wednesday of each month a wonderful time of fellowship and great food for $5.00! Last month over 35 people gathered! All are welcome! This month it is October 2 nd! We start gathering at 11:45. Thanks to all the families who participated in our ongoing Card Program. So far, we were able to give $4.000 to the Building Fund. What a nice feeling! Isn t it marvelous? Our goal for 2011 is to triple this amount. We can accomplish this, and much more, if every family participates. We are counting on the present families to continue their efforts and for new families to join our efforts and start purchasing cards. We all have to buy food, clothes, Sunday put gas School in our is cars off and to a give great presents start for etc...why the year. not Communion live our daily Sundays lives and will help be the Mission church Sunday ; at the all youth and children will have a a gathering time for a Bible lesson followed by activities to impact our church community or organization in need. This Sunday, October 6 th we will be making cards for the military and treats for the Pet Blessing. Also, Halloween Gathering after church on Sunday, Oct. 27 th, join us for treats, games and tricks! 3 Expanded Church Fair November 22 nd and 23 rd. This year instead of a Fall Rummage sale and a Fair in November we will have an expanded fair in November. We are already working on $25.00; please make a check payable to YUMC with the notation Disciple. crafts, planning jams, jellies and chutneys and many other items. Looking for even more ideas! Let us know what you have in mind! Also we will have a Granny s Attic with some collectables and a boutique with special items as well as jewelry. Please plan on bringing in your Christmas items for the Christmas area as usual, but hold onto your clothing for the Spring Rummage Sale! We need jewelry for the jewelry table! Also re-gift items such as Yankee Candles or Hand Lotions that you may not like but another would really enjoy purchasing! For both the fair and the Silent Auction we ask that you prepare baskets! Small Silent Auction: October 20 th we will hold a small silent auction. We already have a few items and invite you to look around for something new or almost new that you would like to donate to this event. We will have a week of silent bidding and then a lunch with great food and fellowship followed by announcing who gets to take home their special items!! Please start bringing the items in now. On Sunday November 3 rd we will have our annual Consecration Lunch after worship to celebrate our faith community. We will have remembered the Saints in worship, celebrated Holy Communion and consecrated our pledges. Following worship we will gather together to share a wonderful meal as a church family! The Quilting Group will meet every first and third Tuesday of each month at 9:30 in the morning. It is an excellent opportunity to learn new skills or sharpen the skills you already have. We have two seasoned master quilters who have earned numerous blue ribbons at fairs and expos all over CT and Mass. Only a few hours of your time will keep many children warm this winter. Isn t worth you effort? Not only is it worth the effort, but you experience a comforting fellowship with other women and a personal sense of accomplishment. Two of the quilters sew at home because they can t attend on Tuesday morning. That is marvelous. If you are able to help that way, that would be wonderful. Plan on attending wearing your best hat! Tea, scones and clotted cream! On November 11 th at 7 p.m. the UMW will host a program from Train a dog-save a Warrior program. Sherrie King will speak about training dogs to be service dogs for veterans with PTSD. 4

Nothing But Nets Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly challenged his readers to donate $10 for the purchase of an anti-malaria bed net, and thousands of people have joined the campaign. The people of The United Methodist Church, along with Sports Illustrated, NBA Cares, the United Nations Foundation and several other groups, are raising funds to purchase bed nets to end malaria. Community-Based Malaria Program The Community-Based Malaria Program works through United Methodist hospitals and clinics in Africa to provide community education about the causes of malaria and simple steps that can be taken to prevent it. The program also provides for mosquito nets and free medication for those who have contracted malaria and cannot afford treatment. United Methodist and ecumenical health workers supported by this program provide communities with comprehensive plans to combat malaria that are tailored to their specific needs. Providing communities with information about this deadly disease and how it can be prevented and treated is how the battle against malaria can be fought and won home by home, community by community all across Africa. Drop your change in the bucket in the sanctuary, as we continue to raise funds for this program all year long! 5
