8 hot Sands Vol. 89 No. 7 JULY 2014 Drum Corps Blasts by Jerry Minto LEGION OF HONOR NOTES By Curran Wilkinson, Adjutant Greetings Nobles from the members and friends of the Hadi Drum & Bugle Corps. The Drum & Bugle Corps would like to thank the many members who performed various duties at this years Shrinersfest. Whether you manned the gates or sold buttons, your help was greatly appreciated. Another great onion sale is now history and for the D&B it was a very successful endeavor. Many members participated and did a very good job of selling the product and making their deliveries. Our chairman, Charles Engelhardt, did a great job in organizing this event and we thank him very much. A group of great D&B members spent Friday night and Saturday morning on the Temple Parking Lot making use of the units large smoker. They cooked slabs of ribs and sold them as a fundraiser and they were very successful in this first time effort. They sold approxamately 80 full slabs of ribs. We thank everyone who made a purchase of these great ribs. Be on the lookout for possible new members to join our unit. New Nobles were taken in at the last Ceremonial and a number of them are still looking for a unit to join. They would be very welcome to join the D&B. Keep in mind the dates of September 9th-14th. These are the dates that the annual GLSA will be held in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The parade will be on Saturday the 13th and since the city is not too far away you could go and participate in the parade if you could not attend the full session. This would be a great chance for the unit to have a large delegation in the parade. Think about it!! The July Stated Meeting will be held on Friday, July 11th at 7:30 PM. Hope everyone has a happy and safe July 4th and I hope to do this again next month and bring you the past and future happenings of your Hadi Drum & Bugle Corps. Highlanders Greetings from the Hadi Legion of Honor. As this is the July edition of the Hadi Shriners Hot Sands publication, this means that one half of 2014 has passed. It has been a short six months. July is the month our nation celebrates its independence as a nation. Ask yourself, are we really an independent country? If you were to go into a hardware store and purchase a power saw, drill, wrench, or maybe a pair of pliers, and you examine the label, will it say Made in the U.S.A.? If you go into a store to purchase new garments, will the labels say Made in the U.S.A? Not likely. When we were in Lexington, Kentucky a few months ago, their newspaper headlines stated 600 workers laid off. The garment factory was shut down and moved out of the U.S.A. These workers are now unemployed. They have no income and no means to provide food and shelter for their families. And, we wonder why this great nation is in such a financial mess? American service members, both men and women, have fought since this country s existence to protect our freedom and independence. Since all Legion of Honor members are veterans, this is a great concern of ours. How long are we willing to allow our liberty and independence be given away or shipped overseas? Hadi LOH wants to welcome Nollie Andrew Bland into our unit. Since he prefers to be called Andrew, we say congratulations Andrew and welcome to the LOH. Remember, we meet the fourth Monday each month at Hadi Temple. We eat with our ladies around 6:00 PM and meet at 7:30 PM on the third floor. Don t forget the Great Lakes Shrine Association LOH Convention coming up in August to be held in Brookfield, WI. More details next month. Remember, it is an honor to belong to the Legion of Honor. by Lou Brummett Greetings from a swell buch of fellows! Early May was a rush as we put the finishing touches on the updates to the Highlander room. It was done just in time for everyone to enjoy during the Spring Ceremonial. Welcome again to all new Nobles! With the room updates complete, we have been able to not only enjoy the space during meetings, but have been able to have much more productive practice sessions. We have already begun preparing for our annual TARTAN BALL!! This year, the event is being moved ealier in the month to reduce conflicts with holiday and circus related events, so make sure to reserve SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15 for a night of music (bagpipe bands and rock bands), dancing, kilts, and the nearly world famous silent auction. In the past, there are some who have completed all of their Christmas shopping in just that one night! Of course you are welcome to stop by any Wednesday night at 7:00 for music, conversation and a wee dram. STARTS THANKSGIVING DAY NOVEMBER 27TH - NOVEMBER 30TH EVANSVILLE FORD CENTER Tickets available August 29th 8
9 Hot Sands Vol. 89 No. 7 JULY 2014 HOSPITAL STAFF by Jack Benjamin We held our Spring Screening Clinic on May 17th. Of course there were lots of other activities on that date. The Hospital Staff was once more in charge of distributing the onions. Thanks to Super Salesman, Jack Larrison who sold and delivered more than 100 bags. Now back to the Screening Clinic, Dr. Mark Browning gave his time to screen the prospective patients. (Thank you Doctor). We had 8 patients come to us. Last fall we had 0. The increase was due to the publicity that Dale Thomas got for us. Also, Mike Palmer got a couple of acticles in the newpaper. Of course the clown was a big hit. We are already getting calls about appointments for these kids. Isn t it great to be a part of such great helping hands. Ad sales are moving along nicely. There is still time to sell more, but you have to put forth some effort. Thanks to the Schnucks store on Washington Avenue for donating boxes of candy throughout the year! A group of ladies from Gibson County make quilts which we take to the St. Louis Hospital. Quest for a Million Pennies is coming up in August. I always get a few stories to relay to you from Dubois County and the generous people there. The proceeds from the collections go to the Transportation Fund. Patrol Points Terry Rumble arabpatrol@hotmail.com A tip of the old Fez to all the Patrolmen! I hope that this warmer weather agrees with you and your families. Half the year has passed us by, but it s not to late to get involved in your units activities. The parade season is in full swing and the more green jackets on the street the better. Check your Hot Sands and Captain Tom for participation in the parades. The Shrinerfest was a success, I d like to thank all who helped at the Patrol trailer and other various positions that you took part in, it was appreciated. Be sure and thank Illustrious Sir Paul Egbert and crew for their fine work on this event. Shrimp & crab boil is coming up, check your Hot Sands for date and time. If you see one of our new Nobles go up and shake his hand, let him know that he is welcome, hey we could boost our membership. If anyone knows of a fellow Noble that is convalescing or is ill please take the time and visit them, if not maybe send them a card and let them know your thinking of them. 10 hot Sands Vol. 89 No. 7 JULY 2014 HADI ORIENTAL BAND WEIRD NOTES Steven R. Wozniak Greetings Nobles and well wishes from across the Hot Sands. A second welcome to our new Nobles. The OB received 10 new petitions at May Hot Sands. This number of petitions shows the Fraternal Brotherhood that the new Nobles of the Hadi Shrine recognized when they walked in our room. I hope all new Nobles are reading this because WE would like you to become active with a unit or county club and enjoy the Brotherhood of being a Shriner! We welcome you to the Hadi Shriners and hope that you will enjoy working with your Brothers for the Children. We invite you to stop by our Oasis, on the Third Floor of our building, any Tuesday evening at 7PM for fellowship, Camels Milk and our hospitality. I assure you that our band is full of life and we will enjoy your company. I look forward to our communication on a near future Tuesday evening. HADI ORIENTAL BAND WINS 2014 GLSA JAMBOREE. To go along with the band winning our competition, the Hadi Shrine walked away with a SWEEP in the Golf Tournament. Hadi OB Brothers took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Annual GLSA OB Golf outing. The Oriental Band sounded great and was recognized by the Judges as such. Congratulations to all OB members for a great performance on both the stage and the golf course. One of our new members, Steve Alsop, did a great job representing the OB as our Genie in the competition. He was unable to walk away with the Genie of the Year award, but he did arise to the occasion when called upon. Remember our sick and shut-in brethren and their families in your daily devotion that they may receive divine blessings. The Hadi Oriental Band wishes all Nobility, Family and Friends, peace and a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous year. Honored Ladies Hadi Honored Ladies met May 19 on the second floor of Hadi Shrine at noon. It was especially appropriate the week before Memorial Day and was enjoyed by all. Winner of the Half Pot drawing was Evelyn Reisinger and the winner of the free lunch was Denise Brenner. 13 Hot Sands Vol. 89 No. 7 JULY 2014 News from Cincinnati Specialty care beyond a burn Easy Referral Process, Loving Care at Cincinnati Shriners Hospital You have made my job as a mom so much easier, said Liz Malarkey, mother of one-year-old Lola, who was born with cleft lip and cleft palate in We are so grateful to our physician and the staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children Cincinnati. After a difficult pregnancy measured with challenging news from one week to the next, the Malarkey family discovered at the 24-week mark that their first child would be born with cleft lip. Ultrasound was unable to determine if the infant also had cleft palate. Then Liz s job was eliminated, and Lola s cleft lip and cleft palate was determined to be a pre-existing condition under Dan s policy. The family needed to pay a very high deductible upfront before the surgeons would operate on little Lola. The family pursued state insurance for their child and discovered that the state insurance had dropped coverage for cleft lip and cleft palate beginning in We were stunned at how quickly everything happened, Liz said. Our experience with Cincinnati Shriners Hospital has been excellent. It has been the best hospital experience we have ever had, Liz said. When we first walked into the hospital, we immediately felt a difference in attitude. The motivation of the employees and doctors was clear. The hospital s whole philosophy is very cool. The care is tailored to the needs of the family and child with the focus on the child, added Dan. It s so homey and welcoming. People really want to be there and work there. It is awesome how they take care of all of us, Liz said. There is so much more to the Cincinnati hospital than anyone who hasn t been there could know. Lola has had her two initial surgeries to close her cleft lip and her cleft palate. More surgeries are in the future, but the Malarkeys are confident in their daughter s future care at Cincinnati Shriners Hospital. Shriners Hospitals for Children Cincinnati s website makes it easier than ever to refer a patient. The Cincinnati hospital s website can be found at This website was created to showcase our pediatric plastic surgery specialties and rehabilitation services, as well as our burn care expertise. Cincinnati continues to make referring a patient and obtaining an appointment for care easier than ever. Every page has a Schedule An Appointment and a Contact Us feature; both are easy forms that families can complete and submit online directly to the hospital. Other methods to contact the hospital and make appointments are also readily available.every page is populated with photographs and information about the conditions. Shriners Hospitals for Children provides specialty care to children up to age 18 regardless of the families ability to pay. All care and services are delivered in a family-centered environment.
