4 Introducing Hadi Shriners Illustrious Potentate 2019 Charles Rod McDonald Charles Rod McDonald was born in Evansville, Indiana, in January of 1953, the son of the late Charlie McDonald and KewBee McDonald. Due to his father s involvement with Hadi, Rod grew up with an extended Shrine family that he holds dear to his heart still to this day. After graduating from Harrison High School in 1971, he went to work for Alcoa Warrick Operations. He worked for many years in various departments, but spent the most time working swing shift in the pot room. In 1986, Rod left Alcoa and began working with his parents and brothers in the family business, Tri-State Painting Co., Inc. He had the vision and foresight to begin exploring the new technology of the time computers. Rod is self-taught on computer programing and implementation of technology into the daily processes of the business. Rod wrote the accounting and estimating programs the company still uses to this day. In 1992, after the passing of his father, Rod took over partial ownership with his mother and brothers of Tri-State Painting and continues in running the business to this day. The company has continued to grow and expand in new services and utilizing new technologies all due to Rod s ability to take the necessary risks to see outside the box. Rod has spent his years with the company, not only running the business but giving back to the industry by serving as a management trustee on various joint industry funds. In 1974 Rod was raised to the degree of Master Mason in Newburgh Lodge, became a 32nd Scottish Rite Mason and then joined Hadi Shrine in the fall. He initially joined the Drum & Bugle Corp with his father, playing the trumpet. In the early 90 s he joined the Warrick County Klowns to try his hand at making kids and adults laugh and smile. After the merge of the clown groups, Rod became very involved with the Funsters and has held several offices for the Unit over the years. Rod has spent countless behind-the-scene hours for the benefit and welfare of Hadi Shrine as well as being heavily involved with many building improvement projects and renovations over the years. Through the years, he has been involved and supported many of the UCOs. However, Rod has been a member of the Shrine Bowling League since joining Hadi. He has bowled several 300 games during his time on the league. He also spent many years as the entertainment chairman, developing many events and activities that we still enjoy and continue today. Rod is very proud of his family and their close support over the years. Rod has one daughter, Penny McDonald, and one grandson, Blake Miller. In 2011, Rod was proud his daughter served as Queen of Isis Temple No. 41, Daughters of the Nile. Rod and Penny enjoy working together in the family business and sharing the responsibility of various projects. Penny has followed in her father s footsteps by serving professionally in several positions Rod has previously held. Anyone who speaks to Rod about his family will no doubt hear about his grandson, Blake. Blake and Rod share a special bond, and Rod is excited about what the future holds for that young man. Rod is both humbled and proud to be elected to serve as Potentate of Hadi Shrine for He hopes his love of family, the Shrine and his friends shine though his efforts in the coming year. His goal is to use teamwork and involvement to better serve the children of Shriners Hospitals and the membership of Hadi Shrine. 4
