HADI CIRCUS MOM & DAD PROGRAM What It Was, and What It Is! The Circus Mom & Dad Program was originally created to provide free Shrine Circus tickets to Hadi Hospital patients. Eventually, it was expanded to include the under-privileged and those who were less fortunate in our Hadi community. At its zenith, the Circus Mom & Dad Program had bus drivers and school systems from all the Hadi counties transporting between 10,000 and 12,000 needy children to Roberts Stadium and providing them the opportunity to attend the Hadi Shrine Circus for the Saturday morning performance. Ultimately, as the case is with so many things, the liability to Hadi, the various school systems, and our insurance carriers, was just too great, and the phase of that Mom & Dad Program ended -- and it changed into the tickets program we now know. In many ways, today s Mom & Dad Ticket Program is better than ever! In soliciting the sales efforts from our Hadi nobles, we return the goodwill by supplying circus tickets to various organizations within our communities. Additionally, we provide tickets to all of our Hadi Hospital patients, their siblings, and each of their parents. Plus, we provide circus tickets to the families of active military members within our community. Equally as gratifying, Hadi still provides circus tickets to those who are less fortunate, allowing children in all walks of life to experience the joy of the Hadi Shrine Circus. The children today are not restricted to only attending the Saturday morning performance, but they can attend ANY show! Or if they so desire, they could use the Mom & Dad ticket to upgrade to a discounted, Reserved seat ticket. Another plus to the Mom and Dad Ticket Progam is they are a great alternative for that business that felt they couldn t afford an ad in the circus book. Suggest they support their active-duty military families, needy children, and Shriners Hospital children by purchasing a Mom & Dad ticket book. How to Create VALUE When Selling Circus Tickets Value! Value is the word that can lead you to greater ticket sales for our 84th Hadi Shrine Circus. Over the past several months we have spoken to UCO members about their ideas for improving our annual circus attendance. The two changes driven by those suggestions are: 1. Closing the upper bowl of the arena 2. Reduce the price of Reserved seats This year, our tickets holders gain so much more VALUE in a simple $16 General Admission ticket. All General Admission seats will now be in the lower bowl with a better view of the circus acts. Plus, the difference is only $4 between the credit given on a $16 General Admission ticket and the lowest-priced Reserved ticket. In short, a family of four can now attend the Hadi Shrine Circus with guaranteed Reserved Seats for just $16 more than General Admission (non-reserved) seating. REMEMBER, emphasize the VALUE of buying from a Shriner and trading up to reserved seats with our Hadi Ticket Office! 6 November 23-26, 2017 Thur - Fri - Sat - Sun

Hurricanes Harvey & Irma: Shriners Helping Masons Wednesday, September 6, 2017 A message from Imperial Potentate Gary Bergenske I and other Shrine leaders have received inquiries from around the world as to how Shriners can help provide relief to Masons and Shriners who have been impacted by the incredible flooding damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. The floodwaters are receding, but water still covers many roads in the Houston and Beaumont areas as of the end of the Labor Day weekend. Therefore, the opportunity to assess the damage and provide assistance for established need may still be days away. We do know that there are many within our Masonic family, who have suffered severe losses. (Since this was written, Hurricane Irma devastated parts of Florida, affecting Masons and Shriners there.) Here s how you can give: Make checks payable to MSA Disaster Relief Fund and mail them to: Masonic Service Association 3905 National Drive, Suite 280 Burtonsville, MD Please write on the memo portion of the check, Texas Disaster Appeal or Florida Disaster Appeal to be sure the money is designated for the relief of Texas or Florida Masons. To donate via PayPal or credit card: In determining how to provide effective and meaningful help to Shriners and Masons in the areas of Texas that suffered damage, Shriners International, Shrine leaders in Texas and the Grand Lodge of Texas have determined that the best and most effective way to provide financial assistance to Texas Masons and Shriners is to use the charitable arm of the Masonic Services Association of North America ( MSA ) which has been specifically established for the purpose of obtaining tax deductible donations and to effectively distribute and account for the funds provided to Masons and Shriners who receive assistance. You should know that the entire gross donation will be sent to the affected jurisdiction. MSA deducts nothing for administrative expenses or expenses of any kind. Therefore, when you give $100.00, $ gets to Texas Masons! Shriners International is working closely with the Grand Lodge of Texas in using its communications capabilities to encourage Shriners who wish to assist Masons who have suffered Hurricane related and flooding damage to contribute using the website established by the Grand Lodge specifically for Hurricane Harvey relief. The link to that site can be found on the Shriners International website, Shriners Village and WebFez. I am proud to report to you that Shriners are also providing important assistance to area residents. For example, Al Amin Shriners, Corpus Christi, Texas, currently serves as a center for Federal, State and Local relief efforts. A number of agencies have set up temporary headquarters on the grounds of Al Amin Temple. Arabia and El Mina Shrine Temples are working closely together in the distribution of cleaning supplies and other essentials. Other Shrine Temples and individual Shriners have made numerous contributions of various materials to assist in the general relief effort. Shriners and Texas Masons are using the trowel to spread the brotherly love and affection that is an indispensable part of our masonic family. We are taught that dependence upon one another for protection and security permits members of our fraternity to fulfil our duties of reciprocal love and friendship. Therefore, Shriners and Masons joyfully and immediately respond when they can provide relief to a brother in distress. As a proud Shriner, we hope you will join us in providing what you can to assist these brothers in need. Yours in faith, Gary J. Bergenske, Imperial Potentate Disaster Appeal For Florida Hurricane Irma hit Florida with the longest-lasting powerful hurricane or typhoon ever recorded, worldwide, according to National Public Radio. More than 60% of the state was without power. Widespread flooding, depleted grocery shelves, and damage from high winds has made life miserable for many. The Grand Lodge of Florida has requested this Disaster Appeal to care for the many brethren who live in Florida, and have been impacted by the storm. While the damage is still being assessed, the certainty of many months of recovery is expected. Please forward any donations you feel appropriate to help our devastated Brothers and their families to MSA. 7

Highlanders Greetings from a swell bunch of guys! Our new marching snare drums arrived from the UK in time for the Dale Parade. Each snare drum weights only 10 pounds, which translates to about $90 per pound. Less weight for the old guys. Money well spent to delay spinal surgery. Paul Black handled all international transactions, legal and illegal. Thank you Paul! HADI TARTAN BALL is Saturday, November 18, at the new Doubletree Hotel. There are rooms available at the Highlander discount, so buy a ticket, get a room, and come have a swell evening. Silent auction, music by the Highlanders, Kylinki Pipes and Drums of Illinois, and Bill SEGER BAND. The Highlander BOAT RIDE is scheduled for Saturday, October 21, at 1 PM, on the Belle of Newburgh, with room for the first 80 couples who register. See Commodore Fitzsimmons for cruise information As always, we practice every Wednesday at 7 PM, third floor of Hadi Temple. ALL ARE WEL- COME. Respectfully submitted, Baby Doc Arab Patrol Greetings Patrolmen, The Dale parade was great as always. We want to thank all who were there and tell you how much you make our unit look good. We also want to thank everyone who worked on our new trailer to get it ready for the West Side festival on Sunday, October 1. It is the members of our unit who have made this such a success this year and with our new trailer for many years to come. We want to thank Terry Wolf for all of his work this year and the changes he and his entire line of officers has made to make it so much better for years to come. We need all the help we can get for the circus. We could use everyone in our unit with the new seating this year. Remember our service members and their families. Keep them in your prayers and thoughts. Be a strong Shriner and a good lodge member that we may help the little ones who need us. Don t forget Fall Ceremonial on Saturday, November 4. Come meet our new nobles and show your support for the Shrine. Drum & Bugle Corps Blast Greetings from the Hadi Drum & Bugle Corps. Hope everyone is enjoying the early days of Fall. The circus ticket sales kickoff was held and now it is up to all of us to do our part in selling as many tickets as possible. You should have received tickets in the mail. The circus will be here before we know it (November 23-26th). As this is being written, a group from the D&B are getting packed to go to the Great Lakes Ceremonial Parade in Springfield, IL. More information and stories about this journey will be forthcoming in the next issue. On September 9th, the D&B participated in the Dale Parade. For the first time, our parading unit was able to use a customized trailer for our members to ride in comfortably and play their instruments. Upon speaking with our group, many members feel this was an excellent idea. Hats off to Brian Lucas!! Since it is now October, that means the West Side Fall Festival parade is upon us. Let s make every effort to put a large group on the street for this popular parade. Hopefully, the trailer will still be an option. We just had our annual get-together at the end of September at Jack Likens camp on Lynnville Lake. This is always a great time with plenty of food, drink, and fellowship. Thanks to Jack for his hospitality in providing us a great location for many years. Our next stated D&B meeting for October will be held on Friday the 13th. Hopefully there will be no ghosts or goblins there. Maybe our 7:30 jam session will keep them at bay. Hope to do this again next month and bring you the past and future happenings of your Hadi Drum and Bugle Corps. Make sure you 8 on for the latest info!

Mariners Log Dear Mariners, As I m writing, Hurricane Harvey is slamming the Texas coast. Suddenly your perspective of your world changes as you see the devastation happening to fellow humans. There are things in our lives that we really care about, but sometimes we don t understand how much until there gone. When I was a child I could have discarded a toy without a second glance, but the moment my little sister wanted it, instantly the toy became my greatest treasure I could imagine. We are not appreciative of the what is in front of us. Mother Nature is a great equalizer, she does not discriminate between race, gender, or economic status. Hurricane Harvey may have taken material things from many people, but it can not erase the precious moments spent, which become beautiful memories forever. Nobles, please take a moment to appreciate those memories made in the past, the people standing next to you, and the possibilities of greater things in the future. Wow 50 Years Brother and Mariner Ronnie Riecken was raised as a Master Mason in September of This year marked his 50-year anniversary, and we celebrated this achievement amongst nobles and guests on Wednesday, August 30, at the Lessing Lodge. It is our pleasure to congratulate Ronnie from all the Hadi Mariners. Mariner Ronnie Riecken and Lady Gail receiving Ronnie s 50 yr gold pen and awards The Ark Two-by-Two Yes, the Ark. Captain Dan Brown piloted the Ark with 20 passengers, who entered two-by-two, en route to an unknown, abandoned island. Shortly after Captain Dan Brown piloting the Ark for Mariners Degree sunset, the bell began to softly ring. Suddenly King Neptune and his Princess appeared out of thin air. Seventeen pirates received their Mariner s Degrees as darkness approached. You read that correctly: 17, but three were unaccounted for on the return trip. The last known whereabouts of these lost souls was aboard an abandoned boat on the Ohio. Or are they in New Orleans? Who will do the Mariners Degree next year? The Mariners will continue this event in the future; this degree is for all nobles and ladies. During this event $170 was raised and all proceeds go to local hospitals. The Mariners Degree provides endless fun that will last a lifetime. I bet even the three who did not return had a blast! Mariners Events The Shrine Circus is once again our responsibility. Do not forget to sell those Mom and Dad books; they benefit everyone involved. Also, any Mariners who would wish to represent us in the circus parades, please contact me for information. Closing of the Mariners Camp Event This year, the Mariners are doing something different. We will have the closing of the camp event on Saturday, October 28, at 4:00 p.m. Nobles, ladies, and guests are invited. We will offer food, fire, and hay rides aboard the SS Mariner. This event will be exciting and fun, so please mark your calendars. Remember nobles, we generate fears while we sit. We overcome them by actions! Dave Horn -- Commodore. IASYC - Port Captain 9

Legion of Honor Notes By Curran Wilkinson, Adjutant Two nobles and their ladies from Hadi Legion of Honor attended the 42nd Annual Great Lakes Shrine Association Legion of Honor Convention. The event was hosted by the Murat Shrine Legion of Honor under the leadership of Bob Watson, Commander, who relinquished the command to Ron Buskirk of Mizpah Temple. It was a great convention. Those in attendance had a very Funsters nice time and enjoyed lots of good food and fellowship. The fall parade season is upon us, and there is a full schedule for Ned Wellmeier and the caliope. If you are able, come out and enjoy a parade near you. October is Halloween month, so be especially cautious during the season because ghosts and goblins are everywhere. During our August meeting we had the opportunity of swearing Scott Thompson into Hadi Legion of Honor. Congratulations Scott, and welcome to our unit. We meet the 4th Monday each month on the 3rd floor of Hadi Temple. If you are a Shriner and a Veteran of any branch of the armed services, we invite you to join us. Remember it is an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor. Oh my, it s October already and soon the frost will be on the pumpkins. Talking about pumpkins, what do you use to mend a broken pumpkin? Well, a pumpkin patch, of course! OK l ll stop clowning around and get this newsletter going. Hey, the West Side Fall Festival is here, so come down and get your face painted. We don t hide your beauty when we face paint - we highlight it! Plus, we have the best food from sandwiches and nachos to our famous RED NOSES. Thanks to all the Funsters for all the hard work to make this year a great success. Man are we busy clowning: Fall Festival, Lake Rudolph, and a lot of other local events - so, we are calling all clowns to come out and enjoy the fun. If you re not already a clown, drop in and see us at the temple, 3rd floor, every 1st and 3rd Monday at 6:30 P.M. Guess what? The Hadi Shrine Circus is almost here, so let s get out and sell those tickets and make this the best circus ever. The Funsters will be selling circus tickets at their kiosk in Eastland Mall, so come on down and help sell to make this a top year for the Funsters. Did you hear about Bill Duster Gher breaking his knee cap? He was playing with his lawn mower, broke the rope, and fell down because he did not want to mow his lawn. Just joking! We all wish Duster a speedy recovery. We have TWO NEW CLOWNS off and running: George Tank Barker and Anthony Bubbles Miller. So when you see them give them a big SMILE. Well, that s all the BS I can think of SO KEEP SMILING..and have a great October. We still have a few fund raisers left, and the most important one is the Shrine Circus on Thanksgiving weekend. Please come out and help support it. We also need plenty of ticket sales. If you cannot sell a book of tickets, sell them as Circus Mom and Dad. Tickets are only $16 apiece for General Admission and can be exchanged for an $18 credit on Reserved seats. Circus Mom and Dad books are $40 each, and when you turn back in the whole book with the tickets and money, make sure you check the box so we can send the purchaser with a certificate.
