7 Hot Sands Vol. 88 No. 11 November 2013 By Jerry Minto By: Darren Foster Greetings Nobles from the members and friends of the Hadi Drum & Bugle Corps. As you read this column the Summer and Fall portions of the parade season are now history and we can look forward to getting into our Winter uniforms for the upcoming Ceremonial and Christmas Parades. Hope to see a good turnout for these upcoming events. The annual Hadi Shrine Circus is fast approaching so let s all turn out to help at the entrance gates. Remember we are one of the first Shriners the patrons see, so we need to be as helpful and courteous as possible. Don t forget to sell those circus tickets and be sure when turning in your money to indicate on the book that you are a member of the D&B. I failed to recognize the fact that Charles and Judy Engelhardt opened their home and provided hospitality between the Elberfeld and Dale Parades. This was much appreciated by a great number of Nobles and families. Your Drum & Bugle Corps had a fantastic turnout for the parade at the Great Lakes Ceremonial in Cincinnati. A total of 14 members traveled many miles to represent Hadi in this great parade. Thanks to all! Don t forget that after the Friday evening performance of the circus the D&B will be going to Roca Bar for our annual Pizza Party. More information will be forthcoming. With the upcoming Ceremonial just ahead, now is the chance to sign up those new Nobles and make them members of the D&B. We are always on the lookout for any Noble not affiliated with a unit. Musical experience is not necessary and I am sure you will have a great time. Come and check us out. D&B stated meeting is November 8th. By: Jack Benjamin I had my annual trip to Jasper for the Quest for a Million Pennies and again I got a good report on a patient. A lady came up to me and introduced herself as a mother of one of our active patients. We are known far and wide as the greatest Hospital Staff in the USA. (Just Kidding). This young man came to us from the State of Washington about six years ago. He walked on his toes (could not place his feet flat on the floor). He had already been seen at the Chicago Hospital, so we continued to take him there. A few months ago the boys, Neil and Darren, took him and were elated to report that the young man came out from his appointment walking normally. Mother reported that he is now employed as a checker at Walmart. Nobles that is what it s all about!! That Mother is the one that the boys put up to calling me and telling me that she could not find the drivers to bring them home. Thus the beginning of the Benjamin Award. Can you believe it's our 80th Hadi Shrine Circus? I've been thinking about the rich history of Hadi and the Patrol. Not long ago I sat in the Patrol room and watched Patrolmen playing Wii, sitting around in fellowship and laughter. I wonder what it was like a hundred years ago to be a patrolman. I can only imagine that it was pretty much the same...of course, the games were different. They couldn't even dream of Wii bowling; but the dreams and aspirations of Hadi and the Patrol Unit had to be great, or else we wouldn't be here today! As the group of Past Presidents' pictures on the wall continues to grow, the legacy continues to be strong. We want to thank everyone who helped out at the Fall Festival this year. This could not be a successful event without each and everyone of you. Even though it's hard work, it doesn't seem like it when you're having fun. Again, thanks everyone! It will be great to see all the patrolmen helping out at the circus. This could be one of the best circuses ever, and we can be a part of it. As Hadi Patrolmen we want to do our part in ticket sales. We have been great in the past on selling tickets! Be sure to check the Hadi calendar for dates and times of upcoming events for the Shrine. Also check Parade Marshal Rick Hubbard's schedule for any parades in the future. Captain Tom likes to see as many Patrolmen on the street as possible. Each endeavor we do together like this makes us stronger as a Unit. As I put in all my newsletters, remember the Patrolmen who are not with us and give them a call. Gentry, Secretary LEGION OF HONOR Curran Wilkinson, Adjutant Greetings once again to our Nobility from the Oasis of Hadi Temple Oriental Band. The OB caravan traveled to River Point rehab on September 24th for a visit with Papa Doc and serenaded him that evening with that mystical Arabian sound. Many thanks to the members who made the trip. We had a large group attending as Papa Doc and Lefty Schwind enjoyed the visit. The Fall Festival is behind us now. To all our members, family and friends who came out to help with our booth, Thank You all very much. It s a big task and takes a lot to handle such a chore and we appreciate your valuable time and tireless efforts. Hey guys, thanks to all who participated in the big parade as we filled our trailer and put on a fine show. Ceremonial is Nov. 2nd. Sign a new candidate as membership is very important and remember we will be performing in the 1st section again. Let s have another big turn out. It s Circus time!! That means sell those circus tickets and remember when turning in your money to indicate on your book that you are a member of the OB. Also, guys set aside a day or two and help us at the Circus Nov. 28-Dec. 1. We would appreciate it. Honored Ladies Greetings from the Hadi Legion of Honor. The year 2013 is rapidly passing, and we are now to the month of November. November has some important days which are Veteran s Day and Thanksgiving. Veteran s Day is the one day each year that we pay our respects to those brave U.S. Service People, both living and dead, that gave a portion of their lives that we might enjoy the freedom we as citizens of this great nation enjoy. Thanksgiving is the day we rest and pay our respects to the Supreme Ruler for the great year we have had and the products he has helped us produce. It is also opening day for the 80 th time of Hadi Shrine Circus. For the first time in the history of Hadi LOH, we are proud to announce the election of Dr. Mike Murray, Colonel, U. S. Army Reserve as 8 th Lt. Commander of the International Association Legions of Honor (IALOH). This is the first step on a long trip to becoming IALOH Commander. Hadi LOH says congratulations to Mike, and we hope this will be a pleasant and rewarding journey. In August 2013, Dr. Murray was elected as 2 nd Lt. Commander of Great Lakes Shrine Association Legion of Honor (GLSALOH). Again, congratulations are in order! This means that Hadi LOH will be hosting two LOH Conventions in the future. The Great Lakes Shrine Association-Legions of Honor Convention is projected to Evansville in Hadi LOH is very excited for Dr. Murray and our unit, and several Divan members have expressed how pleased they are for Dr. Murray and Hadi LOH. On Sunday, September 8, Hadi LOH Picnic was once again hosted by Ned and Rose Wellmeier. Even though cloudy skies and rain showers dampened our spirits earlier in the day, the rains ceased at just the right time so we could proceed as planned. All who attended enjoyed lots of good food, games, and fellowship throughout the afternoon. LOH says Thanks to the Wellmeiers for inviting us to their home and sharing with us a great place to picnic. If you are a veteran of the Armed Forces, we would invite you to join our unit, which meets the fourth Monday each month, eat in the Red Fez at 6:30 with meeting at 7:30, Hadi Temple. Remember, it is an honor to belong to the Legion of Honor. The Hadi Honored Ladies met at noon on Monday, September 16th. A delicious fried chicken lunch was served. Our hostesses were Sue Nolte and Jerry Brenner who had as our speaker Cheeba Thiem-Sobotka, a professional image coach. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed her talk. Illustrious Past Potentate Phil Smith and his Lady Charlotta were out of town. Jerry Brenner placed a call to him, we all yelled Hello Phil! The Honored Ladies welcome any widow of a Shriner regardless of what Temple they belonged to. Join them each 3rd Monday of the month for lunch upstairs at Hadi Temple. 10 Hot Sands Vol. 88 No. 11 November 2013 We would like to congratulate Noble David Horn of Hadi Shriners on the position of Port Captain for the State of Indiana, representing the International Association of Shrine Yacht Club (IASYC). As Port Captain of IASYC, one of Noble David s primary duties will be to maintain contact with all Shrine Club/Unit Commodores within the State of Indiana. In 1971 IASYC started as a club within the Shriners composed of boaters in Temple Yacht Clubs, ambassadors of goodwill and those affiliated among the boating fraternity. IASYC today represents all of these affiliates. It is a private, self-supporting fraternal Shrine boating association dedicated to furtherance of the aims of shrinedom. Noble David s Masonic affiliation began in 2009 at the Craft Lodge of Strangers Rest, Lodge #240 in Boonville, Indiana. He joined the Hadi Shriners in Over the years as a Mason, Noble David has held various positions within the fraternity. His most recent position was a Commodore of Inland Yacht Club, where he received Man of the year in Noble David designed and built the SS Mariner for the Hadi Mariners in 2010, which became the vessel of choice for the 2013 Imperial Parade held in Indianapolis. In cooperation with the Ambassador of Great Lakes Region, Noble David will serve as the official greeter to all visiting Shrine Mariners assisting them in their needs: and also serve in a membership capacity in recruiting of individual associate members, as well as in the creation of interest in the IASYC and the formation of Shrine Yacht Clubs where none exist in his respective area. 10
