6 Hot Sands Vol. 88 No. 9 September 2013 Greetings from the Hadi Drum & Bugle Corps. I hope everyone has had a great Summer and we can look forward to some beautiful Fall weather. This is the month (Sept) that the Great Lakes Ceremonial was held in Cincinnati, OH. This is always a fun time and more will be reported about this activity in next month s newsletter. A big Thank You goes to the Mariners for the use of their camp for our annual Stag get together. The food and fellowship were great and everyone enjoyed a great time at this wonderful facility. As you read this the Hadi Family Picnic is now history. The D&B was well represented at this activity and everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship at this beautiful facility at Burdette Park. It is now time to start selling those tickets for the upcoming Circus. Let s make every effort to support your Circus by selling as many tickets as possible. The D&B had a fantastic turnout at the Owensville Parade. There were 17 members participating on a very humid morning. We also had some great grilled chicken sandwiches after the parade which was very much appreciated. We will be participating at Elberfeld, Dale and the GLSA in Cincinnati Parades during the month of September. Be ready to say YES when you are contacted. Please make a note that our Stated Meeting will be held on Sept. 6 due to GLSA being held on our regular meeting night. Hope to do this again next month and bring you the past and future happenings of your Hadi Drum & Bugle Corps. By Jerry Minto By: Darren Foster Hadimariners@gmail.com Greetings Nobles: Our next meeting is September 18 th. Our Mission is to proudly display Having Fun, Helping Kids! and we do this well each time we parade as a club onboard the S.S. Mariner. The Mariners always welcome any new or current Hadi Noble to join our great club and jump on the boat. Thank you: Thanks to all that helped work the August Flea Market. A special thank you to my sons and their friends for cooking on Sunday so that we could parade proudly in Jasper. The Flea Market is the Mariners major fund raiser and allows us to perform upkeep on the River Camp, support the Temple and Donate to the Children s Hospitals and more. Your help as a Mariner is needed on the first Friday/Saturday/ Sunday of every month April-October. Get Ready: The Dale parade is September 7th The Elimination Dance is October 19 th! Reminder to all Mariners, The River Camp is great location for a get together and is available to all Mariners. If you are interested in using the Camp, contact Commander Foster ( ). Don t miss the Boat! By: Jack Benjamin We are now making trips to Jasper each Saturday thru October 19th. This is the 13th year for the Quest for a Million Pennies. Our Transportation Fund has received in excess of $10,000 throughout the years. Thank you citizens of Jasper and the surrounding counties. On September 14th Buck McCoy, a country star from Nashville, will be at Buffalo Wings & Rings in Jasper. They will donate 10% of their food sales to the penny drive. Please support this!!! Did you know that our shortest trip is to St. Louis. If they are able to get the patient in on time and have a short check-up, the drivers will probably be gone at least 8 hours. THANK YOU drivers for your hard work and dedication!! A BIG THANK YOU to Diane Shaw, Linda Denton and Misty Land for the tips collected at the Build-A-Bar during Shrinersfest. They collected more than $350 for the Transportation Fund. Steve Hawes also deserves a BIG THANK YOU for the tips collected at the Sportsman s Raffle. The bartenders collected $29 to put towards the Transportation Fund as well!! Mariners founder L.P. Dallas, Jack Cooper and myself started with a tidal wave of fun as we departed from Mike Taylor s home-port. With his single screw ford excursion, we were bound for Indianapolis Imperial Parade at 6 A.M. Our excitement level increased as navigator Darren Foster leads us through the maze of Indiana. Many Mariners arrived early in anticipation of what was to come! Water at the parade was not an issue. There was more water above the keel than below it (RAIN). With the help from Past Potentate and Mariner Steve Vessel, the water began to slowly rise below the keel. Enought said. Thanks Steve!! The parade began as I shouted ok let s head em up and get em rolling. The deck of the SS Mariner became a vibrating platform. The banging of feet thumping the deck sounded like thunder. That would be thunder without lighting, even though the SS Mariner crew moves with great speed! While waiting for crew member Dick Georgette to board, I looked back at Commodore Jerry Thacker at the helm. We all were aware that Jerry is not a tall man, but tonight he is standing very tall and proud as he should with a full crew on board. On his starboard side stands I.A.S.Y.C. Quarter Master, Dave Harris from Florida. I see Dave adjusting his rain weathered Fez and his eyes are glazing over into the world of the SS Mariner as we departed. Then all of a sudden I hear a noise that was crystal clear...a sharp click, ssst, ahhh. The sound of a pop top (coke of course)! Looking back at the parade I can only think about the crew. Chief Engr. Wendel Webster turning the wheel as we move forward. Newly appointed I.A.S.Y.C. Bill Davis, I.A.S.Y.C. Rear Commodore Bob Feustel, and Jerry Ritter who gave a big thumbs up from the boiler room as we departed. I saw Tom Coram from Murat Temple. Could he be ready to transfer to Hadi? I saw smiles and laughter coming from every member as the horns sounded, the bells rang and the calliope played! Fellow Mariners, this is a good example of what we can do no matter if we recognize it or not. Each of us represent the interest and reputation of Hadi Mariners whether it be in Henderson, Jasper or Indianapolis. We do it and we do it WELL! Remember, the best ship is FRIEND- SHIP and we proved it again at the Indianapolis Imperial Parade. I.A.S.Y.C. Port Captain, Dave Horn

Summer is slipping by us and fall will be here before we know it. We've had a fun summer with the ShrinersFest, the Patrol Picnic, the Hadi Family Picnic and several other fun activities. We would like to thank everyone who came out to be with us at the Patrol Picnic. Everyone had a blast! The food, fun and fellowship was awesome. The Patrol would like to thank the guys that did the cooking. Great Job fellows! The annual Hadi Family Picnic was a fun time for everyone that came out. The food, fun and fellowship was great. Gentlemen, look at the parade schedule for parade dates. Parade season is far from over. There are several parades in the month of September, so please check the schedule and try to make those dates. The parades are always a blast! Everyone enjoys the fun and fellowship at these small town parades. I know we are a marching unit, but if there is someone who wants to participate in the parades and can't march, contact me at the next meeting. As always we want to remember those that are unable to be with us because of illness or other reasons. You are missed when you are not here. It was a real pleasure to see Herman Stock getting around and being back with us at last month s meeting. Gentlemen, if you know of any Patrol members not attending our monthly meetings please give them a call. It does make a difference. I am living proof of that. I got out of the habit of coming and had not been to a meeting in years. One phone call from Angelo Ruehmkorff changed it all! So please call a member you haven't seen in a while, no matter how long, and let them know they are missed. Get involved in your Unit. You could be the one to make a difference in someone's life as well as the Patrol. So remember this...the more you give, the more you get. That's a law of nature, just like gravity. It works. By staying active in your unit, you are giving the most precious thing you have to give...your time. I will see you at our next meeting. It has been a busy summer for all of us, and we still have lots more in store. With the Great Lakes Shrine Legion of Honor Convention behind us, we are now looking forward to the Great Lakes Convention where all Shrine Legion of Honor units from the Great Lakes area were invited to participate in the colors presentation during the opening and then march as a unit in the parade the next day. We are asking all LOH members to participate if at all possible. Also during September, Ned and Rose Wellmeier will once again be hosting our annual LOH picnic at their home. This is an afternoon of food, fun, and fellowship in a very relaxing atmosphere, along with a great washer tournament. Others games consist of bean bag toss and horse shoes. Further, let s pay tribute to the world s greatest homemade ice cream served at the event. All and all, an enjoyable time for all that attend. If you plan to attend, please let the Wellmeiers know in advance. We are still soliciting members for our unit who are Shriners and veterans of the armed services. Remember, it is an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor.
