1 COMMANDER S CORNER Hello all Legionaries, Hope everyone is doing well! As you all know, it's going to be busy in the next 4 months, the golf Tournament, raffle, awards and the Elections! Kudos to all involved who helped paint the interior! It looks so much better. We have our June cook committee almost in place. Let's all support Bob Hughes and Wade Stanley to get those raffle tickets sold. Now that the winter season is just about over, warm weather means we can have outdoor games on Wednesday nights. 2 IN CASE YOU MISSED IT... The monthly meeting of Leonard Moore Post #71 American Legion was held on Thursday night 13 March Commander Chuck Methot called the meeting to order at 19:00 hours. Our Nation s Colors were posted by Sergeant at Arms Joe Capps and Larry Tice. Commander Methot asked Post Chaplain Rowland Lambdin to give the opening prayer. Commander led the Post in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to the American Legion Constitution. Commander wished all March Birthdays, Tom Daniels, Ralph Castanza, Glenn Creech and Leonard (Yank) Smart a Happy Birthday. The cook committee chaired by Paul Forbes served a delicious meal of smoked sausage, navy beans, boiled potatoes, rolls and iced tea. Commander called the meeting back to order after the meal. Adjutant Ken Parker read the minutes from 20 February A motion was made by Glenn Creech and seconded by Bob Hughes to accept the minutes as read. Motion carried. Commander recognized our two guests for the evening Transfer Donald Capps and Selma Post 141 visitor John Krause. Both were given an opportunity to stand and give a brief Biography. Commander welcomed Melanie Shelton a long time member but her first meeting. Committee reports: Finance: The report was given by Second Vice-Commander Beanie Eckersen due to our Finance Officer was in the kitchen on the cook committee. Motion by Gene Karaszewski and seconded by Henry Benavides to accept the finance report. Motion carried. committee: Gene Karaszewski had nothing to report. Building and Grounds: Ken Wendel reported we are still trying to get financial help from Lowe s. Legion Riders: Bob Reder reported they attended the POW/MIA monthly ceremony at the State Capitol. They have made several rides with military connotations. He reminded all of the Applebee s pancake breakfast on 29 March. Golf Committee: Chairman Bob Hughes reported the tee time we announced last month has changed. We are going to have Smithfield BBQ supply lunch at 11:00 and tee times at 12:00 with shotgun start. He encouraged all to help with selling hole sponsors and if they can t give the hole sponsor maybe suggest the business could donate door prizes. Team sign -up sheets and sponsor sheets are at the front and to see Ken Parker after the meeting. There will be a 50/50 putting contest for another $1.00. Commander announced that cook committee changes need to be brought to the attention of the executive board for additions or corrections. Gun Raffle Committee: Chairman Wade Stanley reported the rifle is a Smith and Wesson M&P AR-15 with 30 rounds of ammunition. We will have the drawing on 21 June immediately following the Flag Retirement Ceremony at 17:00 hours. He stated he will have tickets in the back of the room and hopes everyone will get their tickets to sell tonight. Department of North Carolina, Division III, District of 5

3 Sick and Distressed: Barry Gendler is not doing very well and his family has asked for your prayers. Johnnie Carpenter representative of the Department of Commerce announced veteran Robert Jackson has come to him for help. He needs $ for rent by tomorrow or he will be homeless, he has a wife and small child. Much discussion took place with the main point all requests for donations have to be submitted to the executive board prior to bringing it to the floor of the membership meeting. Larry James stood and told his treasurer of Serve the Need to write a check for $ Mr. Carpenter also reminded all that he has recommended several businesses for awards such as small business of the year and large business of the year; these would be primed to ask for golf sponsorship. Grifolds, Northeast Foods, and Lowe s Home Improvement are veteran friendly and would more than likely be receptive to our request. New Business: Royall Williams stated we should have the Executive Board consider raising the Membership dues to $ This would be one way to raise our revenues. Motion was made by Larry James and seconded by Lewis Humphrey to allow Serve the Need to use the building rent free for their fund raiser on the 29 th of March. Motion carried by a 15 to 14 vote. Good of the Legion: Commander thanked the cook committee. Glenn Creech has made new numbers for our 50/50 box, now all numbers are available. The outdoor flags have been replaced. Letter requesting a donation from the Friends of the Library was read. The executive board recommended donating $ Motion was made by Gene Karaszewski and seconded by Glenn Creech to donate $ to the Friends of the Library. After much discussion the motion carried. Jackpot was won by Henry Benavides. There being no further business before the body, Commander Methot asked the Sergeant at Arms to retire the Colors. Look twice -- Save a life! ***************************************************************************************** BASEMENT NEWS: The basement committee would like to welcome all members to join them each Wednesday from 1830 to 2200 for socializing, camaraderie and sea stories. There are many fun activities to enjoy, including Poker, Dominoes, and LCR. With the weather permitting, we will play cornhole as well.
