The West Side Presbyterian Church 9th Sunday after Pentecost Sacrament of Holy Communion August 6, :00 am Service The Spirit leads us along in that arc toward restoration and healing. Like a mother in childbirth, groaning with pain and anticipation, the Spirit groans within us. She will not rest until all is made whole, and all is made holy, and all is made well. -Brian McLaren If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him because He abides with you, and He will be in you. -John 14:15-17 Love is willingness to sacrifice, to be beaten, to go to jail, to be killed for the betterment of society rather than live out your life in silence. -John Lewis In this way love has been made fully complete among us with the result that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as He is, so are we in this world. -1 John 4:17 By attending church and Sunday school, reading the Bible, the teaching of the Great Teacher, and being deeply influenced by what I saw all around me - it was this belief that somehow and some way things were going to get better, that you have the sense of hope, a sense of optimism, and have faith. -John Lewis For we are God s servants, working together; you are God s field, God s building. -1 Corinthians 3:9 Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which He looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which He blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are His body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. -St. Theresa of Avila I have said this to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world. -John 16:33
PRELUDE ~ The Preparation for the Word ~ Prelude and Fugue in G Major, BWV 557 Johann Sebastian Bach *CALL TO WORSHIP and OPENING PRAYER We worship the Lord God Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Let all the peoples praise the Lord! We worship Jesus Christ, a radical healer. Let all the peoples praise the Lord! We worship the Holy Spirit, the teacher of peace. Let all the peoples praise the Lord! Let us pray: Christ Jesus, our peace, send forth Your Holy Spirit to fill our hearts this day. Amen. *HYMN OF PRAISE 376 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling HYFRYDOL CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION 2 God of everlasting life, we confess that we continue in the ways of death. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. The Affirmation of Faith continues.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. *HYMN 361 How Firm a Foundation FOUNDATION PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY ANTHEM Blessed Are They Whose Spirits Long George Frederick Handel Blessed are they whose spirits long, whose trust is in the LORD. They, too, shall walk and not be weary. -paraphrase of Psalm 63:1,3,4 and Isaiah 40:31 *DOXOLOGY 591 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; praise Holy Spirit evermore; praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen. OLD HUNDREDTH ~ The Sacrament of Holy Communion ~ *INVITATION 5
*GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are You, O Lord our God: You are kind and gracious to us, O God, blessing us with good things. All the ends of the earth praise You; the nations are glad and sing for joy because You guide us with wisdom and judge us with equity. Therefore we praise You, joining the song of the universal church and the heavenly choir: *SANCTUS (Choir and congregation singing) 6 Blessed is Jesus Christ, our Savior: Christ is Your Word made flesh, Your love revealed in the world. He is our abiding peace - not as the world gives, but a peace beyond compare. In Christ s name we have received the Holy Spirit, our Advocate.
Remembering Your goodness and grace, we offer ourselves to You with gratitude as we share this joyful feast. MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and cup; make us one in the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. Give us a vision of Your holy city, the new Jerusalem, where the light of Your glory dispels the night forever. Heal the hurting nations and feed the world with good fruit. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Spirit, we bless You, God of glory, now and forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION AGNUS DEI Please be seated. 7
RECEPTION OF THE ELEMENTS Communion will be by intinction. Please approach by way of the center aisle, receive the bread offered by the server, dip it in the cup, and return to your seat by the outer aisle. A gluten-free option is available at the head of the center aisle. Adagio setting, Johann Sebastian Bach COMMUNION PRAYER and THE LORD S PRAYER (hymnal page 16, using debts/debtors) 8 Here at this table we celebrate resurrection as You feed us with bread and wine. And as much as we might prefer to stay here in this protected place, You send us back to our work - only it is no longer the same work because we know You are with us and in us, shaping and transforming us to be Your witnesses in the world. Nourishing in body, mind, and spirit, may all that we say and do give You glory. And now as our Savior taught us we pray: Our Father... ~ The Sending ~ *HYMN (see page 10) It Is Well With My Soul VILLE DU HAVRE *CHARGE & BLESSING The blessing of the one God - Ephesians 4:4-6 Spirit, Son, and Father - be with you now and always. 11 Worship Values, Practices and Information Congregational participation is the hallmark of Reformed Worship. Hymns, responses, corporate prayers and readings belong to you, the people and express the voice of the individual and the larger body of the Church. We hope the following notes will help you to join us in our liturgy. An asterisk (*) indicates the congregation may stand. Boldface type signifies congregational participation. First and final stanzas of hymns are usually sung in unison, middle stanzas in parts. Share your prayer concerns on the cards provided in the pew rack. Ushers will collect the cards during the announcements. Those arriving after the Call to Worship begins will be seated during the next hymn or the passing of the peace. If you must leave the Sanctuary during worship, please wait in the Narthex until the next hymn, the passing of the peace or the doxology before returning to your seat. Please help us protect and care for our beautiful worship space. Food and beverages, with the exception of closed plastic water bottles, are not allowed in the Sanctuary. Please turn off your cell phone and pager before worship begins. Large print bulletins and hymnals are available in the Narthex. Assistive listening devices are available by contacting one of the ushers. Throughout the Sanctuary, there are a number of spaces available for wheelchairs. An usher will be happy to direct you. Video of the service is available online at We have live streaming video on Sunday mornings. In case of emergency: our AED Unit is on the wall across from the reception desk and the First Aid kit is in the closet across from the reception desk. 11
