Blessed is he who possess Bethlehem in his heart, and in whose heart Christ is born daily. ~ St. Jerome Saint of the Day Blessed Bartolomeo dal Monte Bartolomeo was born in Bologna, Italy on November 3, His father, Orazio, was a wealthy banker. His mother, Anna Maria Basseni, had lost three children in infancy before giving birth to Bartolomeo when she was forty-three. He was confirmed at age seven and educated as a teenager by the Jesuits. His father tried to get Bartolomeo involved in the banking business, but a friend introduced him to a devout parish priest, Fr. Alessandro Zani, who had founded a Congregation to care for the young, poor and sick. This priest became a major spiritual influence on Bartolomeo, who pursued a way of life that focused on self-control, long hours of prayer, and devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1743, after going to hear a parish mission, he became convinced that he was called to be a priest and give missions himself. He was ordained at the age of 23 and went on to study for a doctorate, which he achieved in one year. He remained devoted to study for the rest of his life, leaving a library of over two thousand books. He also started preaching missions. To help him learn how to preach well, he travelled around Italy to hear the finest preachers of the time and take notes about both subject matter and style. His reputation grew, he preached in various cities and in the countryside, and many people came to his missions. These focused on the Four Last Things death, judgment, hell and heaven. The missions were prepared well in advance. Their days were divided into preaching, catechesis for children and adults, confessions, Mass and processions. They used theatrical aids, largely to influence audiences with images of the death of sinners and the consequences of sin, and to convince minds, stimulate wills and move hearts to conversion. The missions were very popular and achieved considerable long-term success. Bartolomeo also left a number of writings setting out his principles and practical guidelines for missions. His main message in them was Jesus as the heart of the priest. Bartolomeo died on Dec. 24, Blessed Bartolomeo dal Monte, pray for us! 3 From the Pastor Fr. Michael Rudolph O Come, All Ye Faithful The birth of Jesus Christ is such a magnificent event that trying to celebrate it with mere words seems lame. Even the accounts in the Bible, as beautiful as they are, seem to cry out for something more. Maybe that s why Christmas has come to be celebrated with candles, lights, decorations, wreaths, poinsettias, trees, nativity sets, countless works of art, and innumerable songs. Alongside Mass on Christmas, singing Christmas songs is my favorite way to celebrate the birth of Our Lord. We get to sing these at church, of course. When I was younger I also got to sing them going caroling through the neighborhood or in a hospital, or at the homes of friends. I also like to sing Christmas songs when I am in my own home, or driving in my car. To help me with this, every year I look forward to getting my December issue of Magnificat magazine. It always has a good selection of traditional Christmas carols, with all the verses! On Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and all throughout the Christmas Season, when I am alone in the rectory, I like to sing these songs, and learn a little more of them. The selection in this year s Magnificat includes Silent Night, The First Noel, O Come All Ye Faithful, Angels From The Realms Of Glory, Angels We Have Heard On High, Away in a Manger, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Joy To The World, O Holy Night, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, and Of The Father s Love Begotten. These songs aren t accompanied by notes in the Magnificat, but they aren t needed by many of us. We have heard and sung them so many times that we know the tunes and some of the songs by heart. When I was a little kid, we even sang them in our public school. I hope these songs will be passed on to future generations. They bring Christmas, its meaning and its joy into the present in a beautiful and powerful way. Another way we mark Christmas in a special way is at Mass. As we are saying the Creed, in the section about our belief in the Lord Jesus Christ, we kneel at the words And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. As Christians, we kneel in the presence of God, so our kneeling at this point is an affirmation of our belief in the amazing fact that God loves us so much that, in Jesus Christ, He took on our human flesh and lived among us. This is the meaning of the word incarnate. It comes from the Latin word for flesh, carnis. Incarnate means in the flesh. Could God have done any more to show His amazing love for us human beings? He gave us life, and a beautiful world to live in, surrounded by innumerable kinds of plants and creatures. He gave us one another for companionship. He made us in His image, able to observe, know, remember, reason, love and choose. He came to live among us, taught us by example and word, established the Church and the sacraments, died to pay the penalty we deserve for our sins, rose from the dead so we can rise again, ascended into heaven so we can go to heaven, defeated the devil, sent the Holy Spirit from the Father, and remains among us forever in love and friendship. When we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate all of that, and much more. So, come, all ye faithful. Come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. Father Rudolph

4 Fundamentals of Catholicism Do you have questions about the Faith? Have you thought about learning more about the teachings of the Church? Fr. Altier will be teaching a twelve week course covering the basic teachings of the Catholic Faith. The classes will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 beginning January 2nd and ending March 27th. The classes are open to everyone and will meet in Marian Hall. There is no charge for the classes. Timing of Giving for Taxes Please note that if you wish to have a donation credited for the 2017 tax year, we must have it in our possession by Sunday, December 31st. The date on a check does not matter for tax purposes. The date that governs which tax year that a donation goes to is the date that we receive it. If we receive a check in early January that was dated in December, it will be counted in the 2018 tax year. The popular IRA Charitable Rollover is now permanently available. This means that, if you are 70 1/2 or older, you may now direct distributions from your IRAs to qualified charities. This allows you to support our parishes without including this distribution in your taxable income. To make a charitable rollover and qualify for tax relief: The distribution must be made from a traditional IRA. The IRA owner must be 70 1/2 or older. The distribution must be paid directly from the IRA custodian to the church. The maximum distribution cannot exceed $100,000 per year. We ALWAYS recommend that you seek professional advice in these matters. However, if you have any questions for the parish, please contact Ginny Metzger, Parish Business Administrator at Gifts of stock are always appreciated and there are significant tax benefits available to those who give appreciated stock held longer than a year. Those who choose to donate stock are generally entitled to a tax deduction based on the full fair market value of the stock at the time the gift is made, not just the original cost. Additionally, donors do not incur any capital gains tax when stock is given away rather than sold. Please consider a stock gift when donating to the Church of St. Raphael, St. Raphael Catholic School or St. Raphael Faith and Legacy Foundation. If you are considering or planning a gift of stock for 2017, please make your year-end stock donations as soon as possible. Most transactions take only a few days to process, but there is the occasional one that can take a couple of weeks to pass through the process.
