3 Correcting Correctly For many of us, including me, correcting others is one of the hardest things we can do. Personally, whenever I find myself in a situation in which I think I need to give some fraternal correction, anxiety starts clouding my mind and, I suspect, raising my blood pressure. I don t want to risk hurting someone s feelings, getting yelled at, becoming visibly angry myself, being rejected, or being perceived as being overly critical. Who does? But anyone in a position of responsibility or authority sooner or later has to point out to someone his or her mistakes or wrongdoing. Even in other types of relationships, like marriage or friendship, sometimes keeping silent in not the charitable option, especially when someone s actions are hurting others. God knows all this and, being Love, has given us instructions about how to give fraternal correction lovingly. One of them is in the words of Jesus in this Sunday s Gospel: If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. (Matthew 18:15-17) You can see how Jesus is concerned that we avoid unnecessarily embarrassing anyone or harming his or her reputation. The goal is to win over the person, not score a point, and to determine the truth, not win an argument. Even the last resort mentioned by Jesus, which could be interpreted today as excommunication, is meant to help the person realize the gravity of his or her transgression when more private attempts to do so have failed. An example of excommunication is when Saint Ambrose refused to let the Emperor Theodosius receive Holy Communion until after he repented and did several months of penance. His sin was having massacred seven thousand people in the Greek city of Thessalonica in the year 390. Most of us aren t bishops. How can we charitably give fraternal correction? Starting with the first step Jesus gives, talking to the person one on one, there are several things that can help. One is to fit the correction in between numerous compliments. None of us do only bad things! If people know you appreciate them and the good they do, they will be more likely to be receptive to criticism. Another helpful practice is to make sure to criticize behavior, not character. Another is to acknowledge to the person you are correcting that you know you are a sinner too, and would welcome correction from him or her in turn. It s also helpful, when possible, to never give fraternal correction when we are visibly angry, or by any means other than face to face. For most people whom we need to correct, the only way they will know we still love them is to both hear our voice and see our face. Without love, nothing bears fruit, including fraternal correction. This coming week the Church honors a man who was an expert in giving fraternal correction in charity. September 13 th is the Memorial of Saint John Chrysostom. John became Bishop of Constantinople in the Year 397. In private he tried to get a number of powerful and wealthy people to repent of their immorality, sometimes adultery, but most especially their extravagant lifestyles and ostentatious material gifts to the Church at the same time that so many poor people in their midst lacked the necessities of life. When they wouldn t listen to him, John criticized their sins in his homilies. He probably didn t use their names in his preaching, but they resented him all the same, probably in part because he also contradicted their way of life by his own simple and generous lifestyle. John died in exile. The next day, September 14 th, the Church honors the greatest expert of all in giving fraternal correction, Jesus Christ, as it celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. On the cross, Jesus shows His merciful love for all people, including the many people he tried to correct. The corrections of Our Lord were anywhere from very blunt to very subtle, as the occasion demanded. They still are. Jesus is a master of human psychology and perceptive doctor of souls and knows what approach is most appropriate for each person who encounters Him. I give thanks to God for all the people, Divine and human, who have given me correction when I needed it, especially those who, like our Savior, did so with humility and love. May all of us follow their example. A fellow sinner needing help to see the Light, Father Rudolph

4 Saint of the Day St. Nicholas of Tolentino Nicholas was born in 1245 near Fermo, Italy. His parents considered him an answer to prayer. They had been happily married for many years but still had no children when they made a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Saint Nicholas at Bari. While she was there, his mother begged God for a son who would serve him faithfully. She conceived and she and her husband named their son Nicholas. He had a strong love for the Lord even as a young boy and used to go pray in a small cave outside of town. When he was seventeen he joined the Augustinian Friars in Castel Sant Angelo. During his theological studies he was given the task of distributing food to the poor who gathered each day at the gate of the friary. It was at this time that people started to learn about miracles done through him. For example, a sick child was cured when Nicholas placed his hands on his head and said, The good God will heal you. In 1269 Nicholas was ordained a priest. Soon after a blind woman was healed when he prayed for her. Then followed a time of moving from friary to friary, which ended after a voice that Nicholas seemed to hear in prayer said to him, To Tolentino, to Tolentino, persevere there. Shortly after that he was sent to the friary in Tolentino. He stayed there for the rest of his life. There he became known for his preaching in the streets. Someone described this ministry in these words: When his superiors ordered him to take up the public ministry of the gospel, he did not try to display his knowledge or show off his ability, but simply to glorify God. Looking at his audience you could see the tears and sighs of the people repenting of their past lives. Nicholas found himself spending many hours in the confessional. He also counseled the wealthy to use their money to help those in need. He found time himself to visit the slum areas of town, where he comforted the sick and sometimes healed them consoled the dying, counselled married couples, befriended children and reconciled enemies. Many people in Tolentino bore witness to the miracles he did. His response was always: Say nothing of this. Give thanks to God, not to me. I am only an earthen vessel, a poor sinner. All of his miracles were done to relieve human misery and involved prayer. Nicholas was known not only for his miracles but also for his poverty, chastity, obedience, kindness, joyfulness and good humor. After being sick for almost a year, Nicholas died peacefully on September 10, Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, pray for us! Some of us are afraid to try. Then there are procrastinators. Jesus is aware of these tendencies in us. Some excuses are in the Bible: Let me bury my father, Let me say goodbye to my family. So are your fears or life s demands or your own comfort holding you back? We all have at least some time that we can devote to the Lord. You are invited to make a visit in the new Eucharistic Chapel any time, 24/7, for as long as you are able. One hour, once a week, is the recommended time of commitment. If you find that you are being called to make a commitment to one hour of prayer a week, there are urgent needs for Adorers on Sundays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. Also, beginning in October, Fridays from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. All questions and commitments of time may be directed to Betty or Therese at the above numbers. Did you know?? The Church requires that all the faithful are to know the responses at Mass in Latin? The Second Vatican Council document on the Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium) in paragraph 54 says: care must be taken to ensure that the faithful may also be able to say or sing together in Latin those parts of the Mass which pertain to them. Fr. Altier will teach a six week class covering the Mass parts, the Rosary, Marian Antiphons, and more in Marian Hall on Tuesday evenings, 7:00-8:00, October 3, 10, and 17, and November 7, 14, and 21 (October 24 is the Feast of St. Raphael and an Extraordinary Form Latin Mass; October 31 is the Vigil of All Saints). These classes are for those who would like to know more about the Catholic Faith with the intent of becoming a Catholic and for those who just want to know what the Catholic Faith is all about. This includes those who have been away from the Church. Each session will include a presentation, opportunities for questions, discussion, and prayer. The Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church are the foundation texts of the program. The RCIA sessions will begin Wednesday, September 27th and end at the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday. Mary Jo Smith Tuesday Morning Navarre Bible Study The Gospel of St. John - Introduced by Fr. Altier All adults are invited to join the Navarre Bible Group for this, our 23rd year, as we study the beautiful Gospel of St. John. We will begin September 19th and continue throughout the school year. We are grateful to have Fr. Altier present us with his wonderful and highly acclaimed introduction to St. John on our first day of class. After that, we will continue to meet every Tuesday from 9:45 am - 11:15 am in the Conference Room. We offer a relaxed atmosphere of reading scripture with its Catholic commentary and discussing it s meaning and application for our lives. No homework - come whenever you can - and bring a friend!! Sharing & Caring Hands/Mary s Place needs volunteers ages 14+ willing to help with our After School Tutoring Program. This includes helping students with homework, helping students practice reading, and working with a large population of refugee children just learning English. 7 Grief Support Group When we lose someone we love, we experience emotions that can seem overwhelming. Although we may have family and friends to turn to, they don t always fully understand what we are going through. Rose Domeier will be starting a Grief Support Group here at St. Raphael. Anyone is welcome to discuss any topics to help cope with the loss of a loved one. Others are welcome to share how they handled certain emotions associated with grief and loss.
