3 Deacons and Growing in Music Some of you may have heard by now that Deacon Bruce Bowen resigned from the position of Music Director here at St. Raphael s, effective January 31 st. He is also taking an inactive role in terms of his assignment as Deacon here, pending an answer to his request for reassignment to another parish. I have great respect for Deacon Bowen and am very grateful for his dedicated service here for the last twelve years or so. We got along very well, he tried to implement the Church s vision for music as he understood it and, as much as possible, tried to offer something for just about everyone here not easy, given the widely divergent tastes in music and opinions about it. He also always did whatever I, as pastor, asked him to do, with grace, joy and humility. After Deacon Bowen gave me his letter of resignation, I sent a letter to the Archbishop. In it I praised Deacon Bruce and also requested that another deacon be assigned here if possible. I m not holding my breath because there are many more pastors requesting deacons than there are deacons to go around. We ll see what God and the Archbishop have in store for us. I asked Deacon Bowen if we could put on a reception for him to give people a chance to say goodbye, but he declined. I respect his wishes. Please keep Deacon Bowen, and his wife Donna, in your prayers as he considers what the Lord may call him to do going forward. I am grateful to Donna for her decision to continue serving the music department in St. Raphael s School and provide musical accompaniment for weddings and funerals in this parish.. I ve decided to not hire another Music Director at this time. The responsibilities that Deacon Bowen was ful illing will now be split up among the other musical staff here and myself. For example, after Deacon Bruce s choices for songs at Mass runs out at the end of this month, the music for each Sunday Liturgy will be chosen by the choir director at that Mass, or, if there is no choir at that Mass, by the accompanist (the person who plays the organ and piano). I am grateful to our choir directors and accompanists Gretchen Eckes, Donna Bowen, Matt Sieberg, Ben Blackhawk, Gene McMahon, Carrie Yerke and James Borsky for their gracious cooperation during this time of transition, as well as their dedication and enthusiasm in helping us to lift our hearts up the Lord through music. Music was on the mind of many parishioners who illed out the GROW survey shortly before I got here in One of the questions on it was: What is your satisfaction with music at Mass? Out of 609 respondents, 19.4 percent answered very satis ied, 38.4 percent answered satis ied, 24.0 percent answered neutral, 15.4 percent answered dissatis ied and 2.8 percent answered very dissatis ied. I think the fact that 57.9 percent indicated that they were either very satis ied or satis ied with the music here at our Sunday Liturgies is a compliment to Deacon Bowen. At the same time, in my mind satis ied can be translated as I think the music here is OK but there is room for improvement. With that in mind, I would like us as a parish to think about how best to make this improvement. I know from reading all of the individual comments made in the GROW survey that there are many different and often contradictory opinions about what improved music would look like. Going forward, I think it s important to hear from each other, but also supremely important to learn from what the Pastors of the Church, the bishops, have written in their authoritative teachings about the role of music in the Liturgy. I think the two most important documents about music in the Liturgy often called sacred music are Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Second Vatican Council document about the Liturgy that came out in 1963, and Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, which was published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in I plan in my bulletin column for next week to write something for you about the contents of these two very informative and inspiring documents. I would also like to provide an opportunity for us as parishioners to speak and listen to each other about what we think might be the best way to improve the music here at St. Raphael s, and why. I invite you to meet with me at Noon on Sunday, February 26 th, in Marian Hall. I will give a short teaching about the Church s vision of sacred music and then invite you, our parishioners, to come forward and express your opinions about what it might mean to improve the music here and why. I look forward to meeting with you and hearing from each other! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. The CSA recognizes each parish itself as a ministry integral to the daily life of the Archdiocese. Our parish really is our second home; we see our brothers and sisters in Christ every week as together we celebrate the Mass. It is also where we are prepared and supported as disciples to go forth to preach the Gospel. Thus, our parish is a bene ited ministry of the CSA; we receive 25% of the dollars we collect in our parish if we reach our parish goal. Please prayerfully consider making a pledge to help us reach our goal! The 17 Collective Ministries served by the Catholic Services Appeal are: American Indian Ministry; Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) ; Campus Ministry Newman Center; Campus Ministry Saint Paul s Outreach; Catholic Charities; Deaf Ministry; Elementary Schools; Evangelization and Catechesis; High School Scholarships; Hospital Chaplains; Latino Ministry; Marriage, Family and Life; Parishes; Prison Chaplains; Saint John Vianney College Seminary; The Saint Paul Seminary; Venezuelan Mission. 5 Thank you to everyone who came forward to help our students pack meals for Feed My Starving Children last week. 368 parishioners and friends joined our students and together we packed 77,760 meals, which will feed 213 children for one year! We could not have surpassed our goal without your help. Children, parents, grandparents, and friends came out on a bitter cold winter night to do what Christ asks of all us to love our neighbor as God loves us. Feeding the hungry is a Corporal Work of Mercy that strengthens not only those whom we serve but those who are working to become the hands and feet of Christ. God bless you for your gift of love. In Christ, Ann Coone, Principal Visit our Open House this week! St. Raphael Catholic School will have an Open House this Tuesday, February 13, 6:30-7:30 pm. Whether you are searching for a preschool, elementary school or junior high, you will want to visit us to see how we are not only growing in academic strength, but in love for God and our Catholic faith. Stop by our school to take a tour, meet our teachers, and discover why St. Raphael Catholic School is the very best choice for your Preschool through eighth grade child! Saints, Popes and Life All too often, as we know from experience, people do not choose life, they do not accept the Gospel of Life but let themselves be led by ideologies and ways of thinking that block life, that do not respect life, because they are dictated by sel ishness, self-interest, pro it, power and pleasure, and not by love, by concern for the good of others. As a result, the living God is replaced by leeting human idols which offer the intoxication of a lash of freedom, but in the end bring new forms of slavery and death. ~ Pope Francis homily at Mass for Evangelium Vitae Day June 16, 2013 Youth Ministry Coordinator: Bob Swift x225 Youth Ministry Youth Ministry Assistant: Anna Scherber x210 Jr. High Feb. 14: Jr. High Open Youth Room from 2:20-5 pm. 6 Young Adult Ministry Liaison ~ Anna Scherber: ascherber@straphaelcrystal.org or x210 Mar. 10: St. Raphael young adults are invited to join us for the Journey in the Youth Room from 7-9 pm. For more information contact Anna Scherber at: ascherber@straphaelcrystal.org Saint of the Day ~ St. Abraham This Abraham (also known as Abraames) is not the one told about in the Bible. Instead, he was born in the fourth century in Cyrrhus in Syria. At some point he moved out into the desert to live alone, but he left his cherished solitude sometimes to be involved in evangelization. One time Abraham and some fellow Christians went to preach in a pagan village on Mount Lebanon. When they went into a hut to pray the Divine Of ice (also called the Liturgy of the Hours), the villagers became suspicious, thinking that the Christians were casting spells in there. Some of the villagers climbed on to the lat roof of the hut and started pouring in large amounts of sand, with the intention of burying the Christians. Thankfully, some of the elders of the village stopped them. Abraham and his friends not only forgave the villagers, but also paid their taxes when the Roman tax collectors came to town. This made the Christians very popular, and after that the villagers listened to Abrahams homilies with respect. He stayed there with them for three years, then left them in the care of a priest and returned to his desert. Sometime after that, he was appointed Bishop of Carrhae, in what is now southern Turkey, and which was the ancient town of Haran, mentioned in the book of Genesis. After Abraham established the Christian faith in Carrhae and brought peace there after some con licts, he moved to Constantinople. There he met the Emperor Theodosius II. At irst the Emperor was not impressed by Abraham because of his simple country clothing and inability to speak Greek, but in time Theodosius came to greatly admire him. After Abraham died, Theodosius kept a piece of the hair shirt the saint had worn, and wore it himself sometimes out of veneration for him. Saint Abraham, pray for us! (Excerpted and adapted with permission of the Publisher from Butler s Lives of the Saints, New Full Edition Paul Burns 2003, Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN) Perpetual Adoration Therese Juba or Betty Kreuter The practice of Adoration is an integral part of Eucharistic life.
