At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. 2 The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Seventeen, the Na vity of Our Lord This week we begin to look together at the Third Joyful Mystery of the Most Holy Rosary. This Mystery is referred to in the following words of the Creed we say each Sunday: For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. Incarnate is not an everyday word in the English language. What does it mean? It is related to the La n word carne, which means flesh, and indicates that the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity chose to come to earth by taking on a human body. When the Creed was wri en in the Fourth Century, emphasizing the fact of the incarna on was an important defense against some erroneous ideas that were in circula on at the me and were seducing some Chris ans. Doce sm claimed that Jesus Christ was pure Spirit and only appeared to have a human body and only appeared to die on the cross. Gnos cism claimed that we can be saved only by learning secret knowledge, making Christ s physical death on the cross irrelevant. Manichaeism claimed that ma er is evil, made by an evil power, and that salva on consists in escaping from the human body and the rest of the physical world. In contrast, Chris anity affirms along with Judaism that in the beginning everything was created good by God. It further affirms that God chose to reveal Himself to us by taking on our human nature which includes a human body so as to live among us, establish the Church and the sacraments, die to atone for our sins, and rise again from the dead to give us new and eternal life. Saint Thomas Aquinas, the greatest philosopher who ever lived, wrote about the Incarna on at length in his book Summa Theologica. In the Third Part of this work, Ques on 1 is tled Of the Fitness of the Incarna on (In Six Ar cles). As in the rest of the book, each ar cle is a proposi on presented in the form of a ques on. A er each ques on, Thomas presents poten al objec ons to the proposi on, followed by his general response, followed by more detailed responses to each objec on. His quota ons from other authors are in italics. The tle of the First Ar cle is: Whether it Was Fi ng That God Should Become Incarnate? A er presen ng four theore cal objec ons to the proposi on, Thomas replies: On the contrary, it would seem most fi ng that by visible things the invisible things of God should be made known; for to this end was the whole world made, as is clear from the word of the Apostle (Rom. i. 20): For the invisible things of God are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made. But, as Damascene says, (De Fide Orthod. iii. 1), by the mystery of the Incarna on are made known at once the goodness, the wisdom, the jus ce, and the power or might of God His goodness, for He did not despise the weakness of His own handiwork; His jus ce, since, on man s defeat, He caused the tyrant to be overcome by none other than man, and yet He did not snatch men forcibly from death; His wisdom, for He found a suitable discharge for a most heavy debt; His power, or infinite might, for there is nothing greater than for God to become incarnate I answer that, To each thing, that is befi ng which belongs to it by reason of its very nature; thus, to reason befits man, since this belongs to him because he is of a ra onal nature. But the very nature of God is goodness, as is clear from Dionysius (Div Nom.i). Hence, what belongs to the essence of goodness befits God. But it belongs to the essence of goodness to communicate itself to others, as is plain from Dionysius (Div. Nom. iv.) Hence it belongs to the essence of the highest good to communicate itself in the highest manner to the creature, and this is brought about chiefly by His so joining created nature to Himself that one Person is made up of these three the Word, a soul and flesh, as Augus ne says (De Trin. xiii.) Hence it is manifest that God should become incarnate. As I was wri ng this column today, October 7 th, a wonderful parishioner of ours sent me an containing a recording of him singing the Christmas hymn Joy to the World. I see a common theme here. God is good! This parishioner happens to have Down s Syndrome. And to think that so many people with this blessing (some mes erroneously called a disability ) are not allowed to live long enough to be born. May we rejoice in the concep on and birth of every human being. That is part of rejoicing in the birth of Our Savior. As Jesus says, As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me. (Ma hew 25:40) Yours in the Love and Providence of God, Father Rudolph

3 Pope Francis Renews Call for Rosaries, Praying Against Devils A acks, in October Pope Francis on October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary - renewed his call for daily praying of the Rosary during October. His appeal came a er praying the noonday Angelus with some 25,000 pilgrims in St. Peter s Square. Today, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, a special gree ng goes to the faithful gathered at the Shrine of Pompeii for the tradi onal prayer, presided over on this occasion by Cardinal Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio in Syria. I renew the invita on to pray the Rosary every day of the month of October, ending with the an phon Under your protec on and the Prayer of Saint Michael the Archangel, to reject the a acks of the devil, who wants to divide the Church. Note from Fr. Rudolph: The above is from Zenit.org. I believe the an phon the Holy Father is referring to is the pe on below. It is the oldest known prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. We fly to your protec on, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our pe ons in our necessi es, but deliver us always from all dangers O glorious and blessed Virgin. Social Teachings of the Catholic Church Tuesday Evenings 6:30-7:30 pm October 16th, 23rd, 30th November 6th and 13th Next Tuesday evening, October 16, we will begin a five week course on Catholic Social Teaching. The course content will be taught by Fr. Al er and a discussion period will be facilitated by parishioner Dennis Minnice, a re red teacher. The classes will be taught in Marian Hall from 6:30-7:30 pm. The classes will address the history of Catholic Social Teaching, the founda on of Catholic Social Teaching, the Principles of Catholic Social Doctrine, and the prac cal applica on of this doctrine. The classes are offered at no charge and are open to anyone interested in what the Church teaches about human rela onships and society. Saint of the Day - St. Angadrisma Angadrisma also known as Angadrême lived in the Diocese of Therouanne, in northern France. She was born in the early part of the seventh century. She wanted to become a nun, but her father was opposed to her plans, having promised her in marriage to a young local lord, named Ansbert. To avoid marriage, Angadrisma prayed that she would become physically repulsive and consequently came down with leprosy. Ansbert married someone else. (He later became bishop of Rouen, and a er his death was himself declared a saint.) Angadrisma was then free to become a nun and received the religious veil from Saint Ouen, the bishop of Therouanne. As soon as she did so, her leprosy disappeared. She lived a good life as a nun and later became abbess of a convent near Beauvais. A number of miracles were a ributed to her, including stopping a fire that threatened to destroy the convent by holding up the relics of its founder, Saint Ebrulfus. Angadrisama was over eighty years old when she died. Her help is involved against fires and public calami es. Saint Angadrisma, pray for us! (Excerpted and adapted with permission of the Publisher from Butler s Lives of the Saints, New Full Edi on Paul Burns 2003, Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN) NEAR Food Shelf Collec on: On the third Sunday of every month, our parish collects food and cash dona ons for the NEAR Food Shelf. The dona ons may be placed in the sanctuary before or a er Mass on collec on Sunday. The next collec on is October 21st. For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork, blessed shall you be, and favored. ~ Psalm 128 We walk in our Lord s ways by praying to our Heavenly Father. Remember how Jesus would go away to a quiet place to pray. The Eucharis c Adora on Chapel is available 24/7 to you, for this purpose. More adorers are needed. More subs tutes are needed. YOU are needed. We are grateful for the many visitors to the Eucharis c Adora on Chapel. Please consider making a commitment to a specific hour each week, or consider becoming a subs tute. With the winter months arriving soon, addi onal subs tutes are needed because of naviga onal difficul es for many adorers, for those who go south for the winter, and to step in when an adorer is unable to fulfill their commi ed hour due to illness. To have Perpetual Adora on there must be a least one Adorer con nuously present every hour of the day and night - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is essen al that each person sign in and out in the book on the counter by the entrance door of the Chapel. It is the only record that proves that every hour is covered. If each en re hour is not covered, then St. Raphael Parish will lose the gi of Perpetual Adora on. This means the Chapel would not be open and available 24 hours every day.
