3 returned to. It must ever be taken up anew. ( irstsat.htm) The Enduring Message of Fatima This weekend Pope Francis is scheduled to be in Fatima, Portugal to commemorate the 100 th Anniversary of the appearance there of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three shepherd children Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco and to canonize the latter two. (Lucia s cause for canonization is going forward but started later because she died only recently.) Other popes have also made pilgrimages to this Shrine. Saint John Paul II went to Fatima several times. When he was there in 1982 he said: Today John Paul II, successor of Peter, continuer of the work of Pius, John, and Paul, and particular heir of the Second Vatican Council, presents himself before the Mother of the Son of God in her Shrine at Fatima. In what way does he come? He presents himself, reading again with trepidation the motherly call to penance, to conversion, the ardent appeal of the Heart of Mary that resounded at Fatima sixty- ive years ago. Yes, he reads it again with trepidation in his heart, because he sees how many people and societies how many Christians have gone in the opposite direction to the one indicated in the message of Fatima. Sin has thus made itself irmly at home in the world, and denial of God has become widespread in the ideologies, ideas and plans of human beings. But for this very reason the evangelical call to repentance and conversion, uttered in the Mother's message, remains ever relevant. It is still more relevant than it was sixty- ive years ago. It is still more urgent The successor of Peter presents himself here also as a witness to the immensity of human suffering, a witness to the almost apocalyptic menaces looking over the nations and mankind as a whole. He is trying to embrace these sufferings with his own weak human heart, as he places himself before the mystery of the Heart of the Mother, the Immaculate Heart of Mary My heart is oppressed when I see the sin of the world and the whole range of menaces gathering like a dark cloud over mankind, but it also rejoices with hope as I once more do what has been done by my Predecessors, when they consecrated the world to the Heart of the Mother, when they consecrated especially to that Heart those peoples which particularly need to be consecrated. Doing this means consecrating the world to Him who is in inite Holiness. This Holiness means redemption. It means a love more powerful than evil. No "sin of the world" can ever overcome this Love. Once more this act is being done. Mary's appeal is not for just once. Her appeal must be taken up by generation after generation, in accordance with the ever new "signs of the times". It must be unceasingly Pope Benedict XVI went to Fatima in When he was there, he said: An example and encouragement is to be found in the shepherd children, who offered their whole lives to God and shared them fully with others for love of God. Our Lady helped them to open their hearts to universal love. Blessed Jacinta, in particular, proved tireless in sharing with the needy and in making sacri ices for the conversion of sinners. Only with this fraternal and generous love will we succeed in building the civilization of love and peace. We would be mistaken to think that Fatima s prophetic mission is complete. Here there takes on new life the plan of God which asks humanity from the beginning: Where is your brother Abel Your brother s blood is crying out to me from the ground! (Gen 4:9). Mankind has succeeded in unleashing a cycle of death and terror, but failed in bringing it to an end In sacred Scripture we often ind that God seeks righteous men and women in order to save the city of man and he does the same here, in Fatima, when Our Lady asks: Do you want to offer yourselves to God, to endure all the sufferings which he will send you, in an act of reparation for the sins by which he is offended and of supplication for the conversion of sinners? At a time when the human family was ready to sacri ice all that was most sacred on the altar of the petty and sel ish interests of nations, races, ideologies, groups and individuals, our Blessed Mother came from heaven, offering to implant in the hearts of all those who trust in her the Love of God burning in her own heart. At that time it was only to three children, yet the example of their lives spread and multiplied, especially as a result of the travels of the Pilgrim Virgin, in countless groups throughout the world dedicated to the cause of fraternal solidarity. May the seven years which separate us from the centenary of the apparitions hasten the ful ilment of the prophecy of the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to the glory of the Most Holy Trinity. ( In 1917, the greatest threat to the world was atheistic Communism. In 2017, I think it s is a combination of what Saint Paul called the great apostasy Christians who have fallen away from the true faith and others who reject belief in the Most Holy Trinity and the divinity of Jesus Christ and seek to impose their religious views on all of humanity through persecution and violence. As Mary said at Fatima, In the end, my immaculate heart will triumph. May we all look forward to that day with the hope and joy made possible by the Resurrection of Mary s Divine Son, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Sincerely in Christ, Father Rudolph

6 Saint of the Day ~ St. Clotilda I don t know if there is a patron saint of dysfunctional families, but Clotilda would certainly qualify. In the year 492 or so she married Clovis, who was King of the Franks, a tribe that lived in western Europe, mostly in what is now France. Like many of the Franks he was pagan; some of his subjects were Arian Christians; a few including Clotilda were Catholic Christians. When the irst son of the couple was born, Clotilda wanted to have him baptized. Clovis consented, but when the boy died the same day, his father became angry and blamed the baptism. But he allowed their second son to be baptized too; he became very ill but recovered. Clovis spent a lot of time ighting wars and conquering territory. During one particularly dif icult battle, he prayed to Clotilda s God, promising to become a Christian if he won the victory. He did win and kept his word. Clotilda asked Bishop St. Remegius of Reims to come and instruct Clovis in the Faith. He did so and Clovis was baptized in 496 in the Reims Cathedral. Three thousand of his fellow Franks followed his example. After Clovis died, his kingdom was divided between his three sons, and Clotilda lived for another thirty-four years. She suffered much sorrow from murderous family feuds. One of her sons, Clodomir, had his cousin Sigismund, the King of Burgundy killed. He repented and became a monk, but then was himself killed by Sigismund s brother. Clotilda then adopted Clodomir s three sons, intending to bring them up as her own, but her younger sons Childebert and Clotaire attacked them, and Childebert killed the two older boys. The youngest of Sigismund s children named Clodoald or Cloud survived and became a monk in a monastery near Paris, which was later named Saint-Cloud in his memory. Clotilda then left Paris and went to live at Tours, where she lived quietly, devoting her life to the relief of poverty and suffering. There she still had to deal with family problems; once she heard that her two surviving sons were on the verge of an armed battle with each other. She spent the whole night at the tomb of St. Martin of Tours, praying. A ierce hailstorm the next day forced her sons gathered armies to leave without ighting each other. A month later she died, and her sons, united in grief, had her buried with their father Clovis in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, later renamed St. Genevie ve. St. Gregory of Tours wrote of her: She won the respect of all. She was never weary of almsgiving, or in prayer through the night watches; in chastity and in all virtue, she showed herself without stain humility bore her to grace. Saint Clotilda, pray for us! (Excerpted and adapted with permission of the Publisher from Butler s Lives of the Saints, New Full Edition Paul Burns 2003, Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN) PRAY FOR LIFE May 2017 Re lection Serious illness is one of life s most dif icult challenges, and in such trials, we want to support and provide compassionate care for each other. Some have proposed assisted suicide as a way to do this. However, far from fostering compassion or choice, assisted suicide fosters discrimination by creating two classes of people: those whose suicides we work hard to prevent and those whose suicides we assist. We don t discourage suicide by assisting suicide. What s more, assisted suicide is bad medicine, a prescription for abuse. Our God-given worth and dignity can t be diminished by illness, dependence on others, or any other circumstance. Every person s life is worth living. Acts of Reparation (Choose one) Pray the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Life for those contemplating, advocating for, or supporting assisted suicide. Visit someone who is lonely, homebound, or ill. (If you don t know of such a person, ask your pastor, or go with friends to visit a hospital or nursing home.) Sharing life and living in community gives much-needed support and friendship to those who are suffering. Spend some time informing and equipping yourself to help stop the further legalization of assisted suicide. Going to Battle Against Assisted Suicide gives a quick explanation of the landscape and tips for how you can help stop it. To read this document go to:
