3 Throughout this season of Easter we hear and speak a lot about the resurrection. But what do we really know about the resurrection? This becomes a critical question for us because each and every one of us is going to rise from the dead on the last day of the world. This means that every single person who ever lived, whether they were good or bad, whether they are in Heaven or in Hell, is going to rise from the dead. For obvious reasons we do not want to dwell on the negative side of this truth. What we can say is that the Prophet Daniel tells us that some people will rise and be an everlasting horror and a disgrace. This means that eternity is going to be experienced in the fullness of our persons. The thought of being in hell is horrible enough; the thought that it will be experienced in both body and soul is enough to make one work very hard to steer away from an eternity without God. So, it is far better to focus on the positive side of what the resurrection will be for those persons who die in the State of Grace. Recall that on the last day, at the moment the world ends, Purgatory will also end. Every soul that was in Purgatory at that time will going immediately into Heaven. However, upon entrance into Heaven, they will no longer be just a soul. Since the personality resides in the soul, the person himself or herself has always been fully present. However, as human persons we are a composite of both body and soul, so the full integration of the person will be restored only after the resurrection. The resurrection is not like resuscitation. When a person is resuscitated they are able to live on in a natural state for a time. However, all of these people will have to die again. The resurrection implies a sharing in the glory of the Lord. Our bodies will be like His was after He rose from the dead. It will be our own body, but we will no longer be held bound by the limitations that the body experiences in this life. Theologians tell us that there are four special gifts or qualities of the resurrected body (this is only for those who are in Heaven). The irst is impassibility. This means that the body is free from physical evils of every kind. This is not about morality; rather, it means that there will be no more pain, no more sadness, no more sickness, no more death, etc. The second characteristic of the resurrected body is subtility. This means that the resurrected body is completely dominated by the soul. This is how things were in the Garden before Adam and Eve sinned. This means that we will not be controlled by our physical passions, but instead, the mind and the will have total control to always do what is best. The third quality of the resurrected body is agility. This means the ability of the soul to move the body with the greatest ease and rapidity. Being no longer bound by physical limitations, we will be able to walk through walls like Jesus did, we will not have to make the effort to go from one place to another; instead, we will be immediately wherever we choose to be. Recall that our Lord told us that we would be like the Angels. We do not become angels, but like them, we can be wherever we want to be by simply deciding that we want to be there. The fourth quality of the resurrected body is clarity. This means a freedom from all defects and an endowment with the greatest beauty and radiance. By defects is meant that no one will have a problem with eyesight, hearing, paralysis, or any other defect about yourself that you do not like. The beauty is not to look like a beauty queen, but that the radiance of the soul (which has been made spiritually perfect) will shine through the body in a manner similar to what happened to our Lord at the Trans iguration. People will often point to the fact that our Lord s resurrected body still had the nail holes and the piercing in His side. This because the wounds He received are His glory; they are not defects that need to be removed, but perfections which remain for eternity. This will also be true of the martyrs: the wounds they received for the love of God will be visible because they are the Martyrs greatest glory. That said, the wounds will not appear in a way that is gross or disgusting. Our Blessed Lady already shares in the resurrection as do a few of the Old Testament Saints as we read at the end of St. Matthew s Gospel. But for the rest of us, we will have to wait until the world ends to share fully, body and soul, in the glory of God. In the meantime, when we consider the tragedy of what it will be like in hell and the glory of what it will be like in Heaven, the thoughts of the resurrection can spur us on with great hope to keep ourselves in the State of Grace and to continue striving to grow in holiness. After all, the holier we are, the more we will share in God s glory. That means that we will not only know and love God more for eternity, but the glory of God will shine more brilliantly through our glori ied bodies for all eternity. ~ Fr. Robert Altier Please attend the Parish Holy Hour today, May 7th, at 3 pm, in the Holy Spirit Chapel. We will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, prayer, silent adoration, and Benediction. Experience the deep healing and peace that is found only in the presence of Jesus, the Lord. From the Musicians Today, May 7, we will begin using a new Mass setting, the Mass of Spirit and Grace by Ricky Manalo. The wooden hymn boards give you the numbers in the Music Issue where you can ind the Glory to God and the other parts. We will continue to use this setting throughout the summer to give everyone a chance to learn it. We hope you like it.

It s no longer just water, but a cup of tea with a distinct color and lavor. Once they ve combined it s no small task to remove the tea from the water. It would probably take a chemist with a complex series of steps to separate the elements. God changes our lives this way. Please contact Therese or Betty at the above numbers and let them know when you want to spend time with the Lord for a committed hour each week to let him do his work. There are hours with urgent needs. 5 Thank you to everyone who supported our Spring Gala this past weekend! It was a wonderful event attended by parishioners, school families and guests. The goal of the Gala is to build relationships amongst new and old families and raise money for the needs of our school - both were accomplished with lare! If you were at the Gala, Thank you! During the Gala, we held a Fund a Need for the Mr. J Scholarship Fund, which was initiated in To date, this Fund David Mr. J Johnson at the Spring Gala has distributed over $150,000 for tuition assistance to students who may not be able to attend St. Raphael School without inancial aide. This need continues to increase! At our Gala, Mr. J gave a heart-felt plea for donations to the Fund and people responded by giving over $20,000. What an amazing gift for the students of St. Raphael Catholic School! Because of the generosity of our parishioners and people attending the Gala, the Mr. J Fund now has about $75,000 available to help students afford tuition, but the need is over $200,000 each year. If you are able to make a donation to the Mr. J Scholarship Fund, your gift would be greatly appreciated by our students and their families. Donations can be made any time at: Donate to Church and School. Your donation will help provide the priceless gift of a Catholic education for a child a gift that can change the world. 6 Saint of the Day ~ St. John of Beverley John was born at Harpham in the Yorkshire region of England in the seventh century. He went to a school run by monks in Canterbury and then returned to Yorkshire, where he became a monk at St. Hilda s monastery in Whitby. There he became known for his care for the poor and for his learning. In 687, John was consecrated bishop of Hexham. Even with his busy schedule, he used to get away for periods of prayer in a nearby chapel of St. Michael. One of the many kind and remarkable things John did was to teach a boy who was mute how to speak. Little by little he went from learning how to say letters of the alphabet to being able to speak in words and sentences. Eventually the boy moved in with John and the other people in his household. In 705, John was appointed bishop of York. In that role he founded at least one church as well as the monastery of Beverly, to which he eventually retired and where he died in the year 721. Julian of Norwich, an English mystic and anchoresss, in the book she wrote in the fourteenth century called Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love, stated that God had spoken to her about John. She wrote, God called him Saint John of Beverly plainly as we do shewing that he is a full high saint in Heaven And with this he made mention that in his youth and tender age he was a dear worthy servant to God, greatly God-fearing and dreading, and yet God suffered him to fall, mercifully keeping him that he perished not, nor lost no time. And afterward God raised him to manifold more grace, and by contrition and meekness that he had in his living, God hath given him in Heaven manifold joys, over passing that which he would have had if he had not fallen. And that this is sooth, God sheweth in earth with plenteous miracles doing about his body continually. Miracles also happened when some of John s relics were discovered in Saint John of Beverly, pray for us! Book Review The Way, Furrow and The Forge These are really three different books in one volume, consisting of excerpts from the writings, talks, letters and conversations of Saint Josemarıá Escriva ( ), the Founder of Opus Dei. Originally published between 1934 and 1988, they are made up of short quotes of the Saint, similar to what you ind in the Biblical Book of Proverbs. Most of them are advice about how to grow in holiness, become a more faithful disciple, succeed in apostolate, ight temptation and discouragement, excel in discipleship and one s vocation, and become a saint which are all the same thing, really. The goal of Opus Dei is to sanctify all of life, that is to say, to make everything we do a work of God, which is what Opus Dei means. To do so, the author offers words of advice, challenge, encouragement, and wisdom about the ways of God and humanity. His style is direct, manly, easy to understand, honest, bracing and sometimes humorous. I highly recommend this book. ~ Father Rudolph Better Safe than Sorry It can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to steal something from your car so never leave valuables inside. If you do have to leave values in your car, place them in the trunk or glove box out of view. Also, remember to close your windows and sunroof and lock all doors before leaving your car unattended.
