3 St. Peter wants to go camping Some of my favorite memories are of camping. When I was a kid, my parents and brother and I went camping in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, in wilderness parks in Arizona, along the St. Croix River in Minnesota, and in campgrounds in Italy, Greece, Austria and England. Later, as an adult, I camped either alone or with buddies in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota, Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, various parks in Minnesota, Wisconsin, South and North Dakota, and wherever I could ind a place to set up my tent during my hitch-hiking days, including in California, Alberta, British Columbia and Alaska. There s something refreshing about sleeping outdoors in the fresh air, with the music of the night birds and insects in your ears, the peaceful sound of tree branches rustling in the wind, and on occasion a sky full on stars on a moonless night, or even northern lights. In this Sunday s Gospel, St. Peter talked to Jesus about camping. He said, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. (Matthew 17:4) He was referring to a special kind of camping, engaged in by the Jewish people as part of the Festival of Booths, that takes place in the Fall. This seven-day festival has at least two purposes. It commemorates the camping of the Jews in the wilderness for forty years in the desert, on their way from bitter slavery in Egypt to the joy of freedom in the Promised Land. It also celebrates the harvest. On both accounts, it is a celebration, a time for joy. In Hebrew the Festival of Booths is called Succot. One of the customs of Succot is for each family to build a little outdoor shelter, or booth. It needs at least two and a half sides and a roof. The roof cannot be completely rainproof while people are in it it must have some open spaces but a more solid covering can be put over it at other times to protect the contents. The idea is for families to spend as much time as possible in these booths weather and other factors permitting but at least to have their meals in them. I remember seeing booths on people s front yards when I lived in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul, where many Jewish families live. I think the joy of seeing Jesus trans igured was what made Peter want to build the booths. In the Trans iguration, the glory of heaven was made present to Peter, James and John. The Gospel records some of the physical manifestations of the Trans iguration. The face of Jesus shown like the sun. His clothes became as white as light. And two of the most illustrious Jews of all time were speaking with Jesus Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets. But I bet there were some other manifestations of heaven there that even the three apostles present found hard to put into words. These are experienced by many people in states of prayer that are usually called contemplation. They can involve impressions of being immersed in love and peace, being taken out of this world of time, and the goodness of God overshadowing all the dark places of this world. Who could blame Peter for wanting to prolong this experience? Not only was it a ful illment of all our good desires, it was also a big relief. Jesus had just told His disciples that He would be put to death. It was encouraging to be able to get a glimpse of that heavenly life that transcends death. But Jesus did not wait around for Peter to build those three booths. He had more pressing business to attend to. Before He could go back to God the Father in heaven, He had to carry out His mission of proclaiming the Kingdom of God, teaching, healing, forgiving sins, casting out demons, witnessing to the truth, suffering his passion, establishing the Church, instituting the sacraments, dying on the cross, descending into hell, and only then rising from the dead. And He wanted Peter, James and John to come along with Him on this mission. God blesses all of us with different glimpses of his glory and in inite love. Some are given this in the gift of contemplative prayer. But it s also offered to us in many other ways. Delight in God may be ignited by some words of Sacred Scripture, helping someone in need, enjoying the company of a good spiritual friend, praying the Rosary, enjoying the beauty of nature, or in some other way. St. Thomas Aquinas taught that whatever is received, is received according to the mode of the receiver. God knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows the best way to connect with us. However God chooses to connect with us, we can be sure that He will do so in ways that are meant to encourage and help us. Satan is a liar and accuser. The Holy Spirit is the Consoler. Succot has a lot in common with Lent. Both commemorate journeys in the desert. Both celebrate God s loving presence and goodness even in dif icult circumstances. Both hold out the promise of better days to come, by God s grace. As we journey though Lent, may we keep this in mind. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His mercy endures forever (Psalm 136:1) Your fellow wanderer in the desert, Father Rudolph Prayers for the Sick Please pray for David M., and Norb Meier. To add a name to this list for one month call x523.

All adults and teenagers are welcome! Please help spread the word & invite your friends and neighbors! Before I formed you in the womb I knew you Jeremiah 1:5 Good Friday All-Day Prayer Vigil Pro-Life Action Ministries is sponsoring an all-day solemn prayer vigil in front of Planned Parenthood's megaabortion facility at 671 Vandalia St., St. Paul, on Good Friday (April 14), from 8:30 am - 4 pm. All are invited to join us for any amount of time. This annual Good Friday All-Day Prayer Vigil has been a time of powerful prayer and witness to the humanity of the unborn. It has also been a time of deep re lection and strengthening of conviction for all who attend. The entire focus is on prayer. We refrain from using signs that would connote a picket or demonstration to the public. Instead, a life-sized cross is carried, keeping the prayerful focus of the day on the cross of Christ. Innocent was from Albano, Italy, which is about 25 miles from Rome. He became Pope in the year 401 and remained in that of ice until his death sixteen years later. The way he faced the dif icult problems of his time show him to have been capable, energetic and vigorous. For one thing, he was active in deciding a number of issues that other bishops sent to him. For example, after the bishops of Africa had condemned the heresy of Pelegianism which holds that we can get to heaven by our own efforts, even without God s grace they wrote Innocent asking him to con irm their decisions, taken at councils in Carthage and Milevis in 416. He did so, adding that in all matters of faith bishops throughout the world should refer to St. Peter, as indeed you have done. The papal con irmation was announced by St. Augustine to his lock in Hippo: Two councils have written to the Apostolic See about this matter, and the reply has come back: the question is settled. This is the source of the saying, Rome has spoken, the matter is ended. Innocent also instructed several bishops to see to it that their clergy observed celibacy according to the Roman custom. During his ponti icate Rome endured being conquered and looted by the barbarian Goth tribe. Through it all he remained a wise and courageous pope. Saint Innocent I, pray for us! (Excerpted and adapted with permission of the Publisher from Butler s Lives of the Saints, New Full Edition Paul Burns 2003, Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN) Perpetual Adoration Therese Juba or Betty Kreuter Another blessing to fasting one we might not think of the same time and space that we give to God is also a sacred gift that we give to ourselves. When we set aside this time we are asking the Lord to be more present to us. We are asking him to give us a deeper taste of His love and a deeper sense of His comfort and healing. Remember that this is a season of grace and God is more than willing to shower His blessings on us as we seek him. If you are planning a visit to the Chapel, maybe the visit could be for an hour instead of enough time to pray a rosary or say a short prayer. There is still an urgent need for an Adorer for the hours of Midnight to 1 am on Mondays and Tuesdays. What an awesome time to pray. Seeking Healing If you have been abused or victimized by someone representing the Archdiocese of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, we want to hear from you.
