This year we are blessed to welcome Sister Nirmala Panditi, CSA (Catechetical Sisters of Arogyamatha). The CSA Sisters are based in the Diocese of Kadapa in India, where they engage in a variety of apostolates, such as caring for those who are sick; feeding, clothing, and educating orphans; teaching young girls skills like sewing; evangelizing the poor; teaching those unable to go to school how to read; catechizing newly baptized Catholics and spreading devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They also have communities elsewhere; Sister Nirmala lives in a convent in Texas. She will be speaking at all three Sunday Liturgies next weekend, July 8-9, and a second collection will be taken up for the work of the Sisters. Please prayerfully consider what God may ask you to contribute, and keep them and those they serve in your prayers. ~ Father Rudolph

3 I recently saw a video clip of an Egyptian newscast. The Anchorman for this news program is apparently the most watched, most trusted newscaster in the country. The man played part of an interview with the daughter of a Christian man who had been beheaded by some Islamic terrorists. In this interview the woman explained how she forgave the men who did this to her father, that she held no animosity toward them, and that she desired their conversion and repentance so they could go to Heaven. The Anchorman, whom I assume is Muslim, looked directly into the camera and began a fairly lengthy monologue about what he had just heard. I was expecting ridicule name calling, but none of that happened. What did happen left me in shock and wonder. This man went on to talk about these Christians and how they are not like other people. At one point he said they were made of steel while at another point he said they were made of a substance unlike any other human beings. He mentioned that he would ind it impossible to forgive anyone who killed his father, let alone not want revenge, but the conversion of the killers. He went on and on for several minutes. I was in shock because his reaction was the opposite of what I have come to expect. But I was in wonder as I pondered what my own response would be if someone beheaded my father or someone else I loved. I marveled at the faith and the charity of the heroic Christian woman; I marveled shamefully at my own failure to put my faith into practice like this woman in Egypt had done. As Americans it is been pretty easy to live our faith. Because it has been so easy, we have watered it down. The Christians in Egypt have to live their faith daily. By this I do not mean that they have to pray every day; they, like all Christian people, have to pray always, as our Lord instructed us. What I mean is that these people have had to look very seriously at what they believe. They understand, very practically, that once they have made their choice, they have to live it all day, every day. They are persecuted regularly for their faith in Jesus. They live every day with the knowledge that they could be put to death because of their faith. Rather than try to hide their faith, these people proclaim it, not so much by word, but by their actions. We all know that there is a possibility that we could be persecuted or even killed for our faith, but we also know that it is a very remote possibility. Rather than getting stuck in vague fantasies, we need to make things more real, more practical. We have to realize that there is no way that we would be able to forgive someone for doing something as horrible as killing a loved one if we cannot forgive someone for stealing something from us (perhaps years ago), for speaking calumnies about us, for lying to us or defrauding us, for having injured us in some way, or for just being a jerk. Jesus teaches us many times in the Gospels about the necessity of forgiving others. He does not ever present it as an option. In fact, He tells us straight out that if we do not forgive, we will not be forgiven. We also pray condemnation upon ourselves every time we pray the Lord s Prayer if we refuse to forgive because we pray that we will be forgiven only to the degree that we forgive. So, forgiveness is at the heart of what it means to be a member of Jesus Christ and a child of God. Beside this, unforgiveness is the devil s most powerful tool. He is able to hold us back from spiritual growth and keep stuck in our anger and hatred. Not only do we need to ask ourselves what good the anger and hatred are doing for us or for anyone else (hint: nothing), but we also need to remove the direct in luence the evil one can have on us when we have the door of our lives opened wide for him. How do we forgive? First of all, pray for the person or people with whom you are having trouble and ask God to bless them. Secondly, pray for the grace to forgive and to let go. Third, reject the lies the devil will tell you, such as, to forgive is to say it was okay, to forgive is to let the other off the hook, one cannot forgive until the other is sorry and asks for forgiveness. All of these are lies! God forgives, but He never says it was okay to sin. To forgive another is to let yourself off the hook, not the other. Anyone can forgive at any time, but reconciliation is only possible if the other repents and asks forgiveness: it takes one to forgive, it takes two to reconcile. We all need to look into our hearts and ask ourselves if there is anyone we have not forgiven. Like the Christians in Egypt, we have to take our choice to follow Jesus seriously and put it into practice. This begins with forgiveness of others and extending charity to others. One day we will all stand before the Judgment Seat of God. We will have enough to deal with that day; we do not want to have to try to answer to why we refused to forgive others when we expect God to forgive us for doing far worse that what others have done to us. Look at the Cruci ix, the price of our forgiveness, and ask Jesus if 1) you are justi ied in not forgiving, and 2) does He want you to forgive. It is hard, but the heroic woman from Egypt did not get to the point of forgiving those who killed her father by backing away from things that were dif icult. ~ Fr.Robert Altier

4 Chapel Thanksgiving By now many of you have seen our new Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. I have heard many positive comments about it, and no negative ones. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to not only our new Chapel, but the old one as well. A special thanks to Therese and Richard Juba and Gert Kodek, who irst approached Fr. Juettner about having a Perpetual Adoration Chapel built over 20 years ago, a dream which, thanks to God and Fr. Juettner, came true at its dedication on June 1, Thanks too to Betty Kreuter, who has been co-coordinator of the Chapel with Therese. The two of them make a great team, who will continue coordination of Eucharistic Adoration in the new Chapel. Thanks to Pamela Cheney, and others, who decorated the Chapel so beautifully. Thanks to the hundreds of Adorers who have signed up for weekly holy hours, served as substitutes, or stopped by whenever they could. Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas for the new Chapel, including Therese Juba, Betty Kreuter, Jim Smith, Ginny Metzger, members of the St. Raphael Pastoral Council and the Rosary Society, Tom Kreuter and many others. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Our Faith, Our Legacy capital campaign, which paid for the construction of the new Chapel. Thanks to everyone who paid for the new stained glass window, including contributors to the Pastor s Project fund, and members of the Rosary Society and Knights of Columbus. Thanks to everyone who helped pay for the new padding for the chairs and kneelers, including the Knights of Columbus. Thanks to the members of the Holy Name Society who took off the old padding and put on the new. Thanks to Paul Biser for making and donating the beautiful bench in the Chapel entryway. Thanks to those who designed the new Chapel, namely the team from Miller Dunwiddie Architects: Paul May, Principal / Architect; Kathryn Hunsley, Associate Principal / Interior Designer; and Megan Miller, Interior Designer, with input from Therese Juba, Betty Kreuter, Jim Smith and Ginny Metzger. And a big thanks to all of you who keep Eucharistic Adoration going here at St. Raphael s! May our adoration of our in initely loving and lovable God never cease! God bless all of you! ~ Father Rudolph Eucharistic Adoration The New Chapel is Open Therese Juba or Betty Kreuter Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to our faithful Adorers! Everyone is invited to rest in the presence of the Lord in our new Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. Look for the sign at the entrance (at the southwest corner of church building). There are 168 hours that have an adorer each week. To have two adorers (prayer partners) at each hour we need a need 336 adorers. We are fortunate to have some hours are already covered by two adorers. However, there are three hours that urgently need at least one committed adorer. The hours are: Tuesdays, midnight to 1 am; Tuesdays 11 am to noon; and Wednesdays from 11 pm to midnight. These hours are temporarily being illed by substitutes. Contact Therese or Betty at the above numbers to ask questions about Adoration, commit to weekly hour of prayer, or to let them know if you could be a substitute. You may also just stop in the chapel any time for a prayerful visit. 6 Saint of the Day Blessed Peter of Luxembourg Peter was born in 1369 to wealthy parents who were members of the nobility in Luxembourg; both of them died by the time he was four years old. As a boy he was known for his piety and intelligence. Peter was educated by an aunt until he was ten, when he was sent to Paris to begin his formal studies. It was a dif icult time for Europeans. France and England were in the middle of ighting a long series of battles that was later called the Hundred Years War, and there were three men claiming to be pope, supported by different civil rulers. One of the claimants to the papacy, Clement VII, appointed Peter as Bishop of Metz, in northeastern France, in 1384; two months later he made him a Cardinal. Peter was only about 15 years old at the time. He has to rely on the armed help of his brother to enter Metz, because it was occupied by supporters of another claimant to the papacy, Urban VI. Once he was in charge of the city, Peter began a visitation of the parishes there and tried to correct problems among the clergy. He was soon forced out by opponents, resigned as Bishop of Metz, and moved irst to Ligny and then to Paris. From there, Clement called him to the French city of Avignon, where he was living. As he stayed in the papal palace, Peter tried to live a life of penance that was so extreme that Clement ordered him to reduce his penances for the sake of his health. Peter also gave generously to the poor and when his money ran out, sold his episcopal ring to have something to give to them. He was planning a diplomatic mission to the kings of England and France in an attempt to bring peace when his health started going downhill. He moved into a Carthusian Monastery nearby, where he soon died, on July 2, 1387, at the age of eighteen. His tomb soon became a place of pilgrimage and many miracles were reported there. Blessed Peter of Luxembourg, pray for us!
