3 Don t be afraid of change I heard somewhere that about one third of people tend to not like change, about one third tend to like it, and about one third really don t care. This may have something to do with what a priest told us in seminary, that if you are a pastor, about a third of the people will hate you, about a third of the people will love you, and about a third of the people will be indifferent to you. Having been a pastor in three parishes, and having had conversations with many other pastors, I m not about to argue with that assessment. Change is part of life. So is fear of change, for many people. Jesus Christ knows that. He said many times, to many people as in this Sunday s Gospel (Matthew 10: 31) Do not be afraid. The Gospel tells us some of the things they were afraid of, like death, the devil, persecution, ghosts, poverty and pain. I imagine they were also afraid of what people in every time and place tend to fear, like loneliness, rejection, ridicule, failure, hunger, thirst, homelessness, imprisonment, addictions, illness, helplessness, enslavement, injustice, war, grief, uncertainty, making mistakes, regret, guilt, memory loss, shame, and feeling useless and aimless. When Jesus walked this earth, some people were afraid that He was changing the Jewish religion, at least the way they understood it, and they were unsure how to respond. Some were afraid that His popularity would threaten their own. Others were afraid it would cause the Romans to crack down on them, and eliminate the relative freedoms they enjoyed. Some were afraid He was leading people the wrong way, or was an imposter, lunatic or blasphemer. Some people in the world today have other fears, like of having their children kidnapped to fight wars or becoming child brides, or of being killed by terrorists, having their homes destroyed by warfare, getting sick from unclean water, being killed for being a Christian, not having enough food to eat, or watching their children die from starvation. In the USA, many people are afraid of other things, like political leaders, losing their jobs, becoming homeless, dying in a nursing home, their adult children leaving the practice of their faith or getting addicted to drugs or ending up in prison or entering into an unhappy marriage, or of First Saturday Devotions All are invited to attend the First Saturday Devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, after the 8 am Mass, on the first Saturday of each month, in the Holy Spirit Chapel. The next First Saturday is July 1. Our Lady of Fatima promised Sister Lucia that she would assist at the hour of death, with graces necessary for salvation, all those who on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months confess, receive Holy Communion, pray a Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour meditating on the fifteen mysteries with the intention of offering me reparation. getting into these situations themselves. People are afraid of being mugged, being shot, having their homes burglarized, being assaulted, having their spouse cheat on them or leave them, not finding a spouse, the pain of chronic illness, adjusting to civilian life after a tour of duty as a solider, being ignored or misunderstood or lied about, being deported, or of being treated poorly simply because of the color of one s skin or one s country of origin. Here at St. Raphael Church and School, I ve heard first-hand or second-hand that some people are afraid of the number of people leaving the parish, declining numbers of students in our school, that staff changes will have a negative effect on our parish and school, that there seem to be fewer practicing Catholics in each generation, being able to pay their bills, the spiritual welfare of their children and grandparents, the state of their marriage, the health of themselves and their loved ones, and the future. Jesus says to all of us here today at St. Raphael Church and School the same thing He said to people in Israel two thousand years ago and has said ever since then to people all over the world. Do not be afraid! Almost everything in the world changes over time. To be alive is to change. This is as true for institutions, organizations, communities, parishes and schools as it is for families and individuals. But God does not change, and He is love. So He is our hope. Saint Paul knew this. From prison in the Greek city of Philippi, he wrote to his fellow Christians: My God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19). In the same letter, he tells them not to worry: Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7) In this world of change, these words of St. Paul are good advice for all of us. But they are not only advice, they are expressions of God s wisdom and love. So whatever changes come our way, let s rest assured that God will bring good out of them. He always has a good plan. The same God who has always supplied what we need, when we need it, in a way that s best for us, isn t about to change. Let s rejoice in that, and look forward to the future with hope and confidence. ~ Fr. Rudolph The Rosary Society's First Annual Tea was a success! Thanks to all who were able to attend. The vintage hats were adorable, the tea cups timely, the food fantastic, and the fellowship priceless! Have a great summer!

Saint of the Day Blessed Madeleine Fontaine & Companions Madeleine and her Companions were members of the community of religious sisters known as the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. They were martyred in the time known as the Great Terror during the French Revolution, when all public and private Christian religious worship was forbidden. Thousands of priests and religious were arrested and executed as enemies of the State. Madeleine s community consisted of seven Sisters in the small town of Arras. They cared for the sick people of the town and ran a school for girls. Their work became endangered in 1793 when Joseph Lebon, an apostate priest, seized the possessions of the community and imposed a lay director on the school. They were allowed to continue their work, but only when they wore secular clothing instead of their religious habits. Madeleine, as the Superior of the Sisters, realized that things would get worse, and sent the two youngest nuns to Belgium disguised as peasants. One Sister, who had taken temporary vows, returned to her family when these expired. This left four sisters Madeleine, who was seventy -one years old, and Françoise, The re se and Jeanne, all in their forties. They joined Madeleine in refusing to sign an anti-catholic oath demanded by the Revolutionaries. In 1794 they were accused of counter-revolutionary activity, arrested on February 14, tried on June 26 and executed by the guillotine on June 27. The Sisters went to their death singing a hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ave Maris Stella (Hail, Star of the Sea). Mother Madeleine was the last to go to the guillotine. As she approached it she turned to the crowd and shouted, Listen, Christians! We are the last victims. The persecution is going to stop. The gallows will be destroyed. The altars of Jesus will rise again gloriously. And so it happened. Blessed Madeleine Fontaine and Companions pray for us!
