2 The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Twenty-three: The Na vity of Our Lord, con nued When was Jesus born? Sacred Scripture tells us neither the day of the year nor the me of day. The earliest record we have of his birth being celebrated on December 25 th comes from the Fourth Century. As for the me of day, we read in the Gospel of Saint Luke of the announcement of the Savior s birth by an angel to some shepherds watching their flock by night, but it doesn t say that Jesus was born that night. Theore cally, he could have been born a er sunrise. Saint Ma hew s Gospel tells us that the Wise Men followed a star to the baby Jesus, but it doesn t state that he was newly born when they found him. In spite of the lack of biblical evidence, why has Chris an tradi on focused on Jesus being born the night leading into December 25 th? In trying to find the answer, it s important to remember the Catholic principle that we don t find all truth not even all the truth about religious things in the Sacred Scripture. Sacred Tradi on contains a lot of truth too. For example, we don t know whether Jesus was born on December 25 th or not. It s possible that he was, and that the date was handed on by the apostles or the Blessed Virgin Mary. It s also possible that that date was chosen centuries a er his birth to bump a pagan feast from the celebratory calendar of the people of the Roman Empire. But either way, thinking of Jesus as being born in winter illustrates an important spiritual truth. Winter is a me of coldness. Jesus came to heat the coldness of our hearts with the fire of God s love. Winter is also a me when nights are long and days are short. Jesus came to be the Light of the world; to replace the darkness of sin and ignorance with the light of virtue and the truth of who God really is. The tradi on that Jesus was born at night is one way of interpre ng the Gospel account of His birth. It certainly is hinted at, if not explicitly stated, by the men on of stars. And like the tradi on of his being born near the winter sols ce the tradi on that Jesus was born at night communicates some important spiritual truths. Not only did he come to light up the world with the truth and the warmth of God s love, like a divine candle, or be er yet, sun he also comes into our own lives today to lighten our moods, show us the path to happiness and eternal life and inform our decisions. And Jesus comes especially when we don t expect him. Maybe he comes in disguise as someone who is homeless, begging, lonely, or sick. Maybe he comes when we are feeling complacent or comfortable, to shake us up. Maybe he comes when we are feeling down, to cheer us up. Maybe he comes when we are feeling especially sinful and unlovable. Many beau ful tradi ons have developed over the years in connec on with the celebra on of Christmas. Midnight Mass (now Mass at Night ), Na vity creches. Songs like Silent Night. Christmas lights on trees or houses. These are all amplifica ons, so to speak, of truths about who Jesus is, what he came for, and how he keeps coming to us today. All of us human beings on this earth experience mes of darkness and cold, so to speak. Not just physically, but also emo onally and spiritually. Darkness is in our souls and around us. The world is full of lies, personal a acks, gossip, detrac on, fake news, complaining and insults. Jesus comes to us precisely in this darkness and cold. When he does, may our homes be a shelter for the Holy Family, our hearts be like mangers for Jesus to rest in, our mouths like those of the angel to proclaim his coming, and our lives like bright stars to help people find Jesus. Looking forward to the coming of the Lord Jesus, Father Rudolph Welcome to our new parishioners! We are so happy you are here with us!! Shaaju and Celina Joseph Cynthia Komarec

4 Saint of the Day - Saint Adelard Adelard was born in 753. He came from a powerful family; his first cousin was Charlemagne, who ruled the Holy Roman Empire, which consisted of what is now France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, northern Italy and large parts of eastern Europe. When he was twenty, Adelard entered a monastery at Corbie in northern France. He started out there as gardener and eventually was elected abbot. A er a while Charlemagne forced him to leave the monastery in order to be the tutor for one of his sons. A er Charlemagne s death, Adelard was caught up in the family conflicts over who would succeed him as emperor. He was accused by the victor of having supported one of the losers and was banished to a monastery on the southwest coast of France. Adelard was elated at this; it enabled him to lead a quiet, contempla ve life. This peace did not last because five years later, in 821, the emperor was convinced of Adelard s innocence and recalled him to court. But he wasn t in the emperor s favor very long so soon was able to return to his original monastery at Corbie. There he enjoyed taking on the most menial tasks, while his moral stature resulted in him being an unofficial spiritual guide to his fellow monks. He was also known for distribu ng much of the income of the monastery to the poor people in the area, contribu ng to the evangeliza on and conversion of the northern European peoples and encouraging a love of learning among the monks, including educa on in La n, French, German and literature. Adelard was part of a movement known as The Carolingian Renewal, which, encouraged by Charlemagne, tried to rebuild the Roman Empire as it was in its Chris an phase. This renewal emphasized both rights given to kings by God and their responsibili es to rule rightly, under God, and to pursue ongoing conversion and holiness. Another theme was the training of lay people, who were gathering around monasteries in growing groups of penitents, oblates and simply fervent Chris ans. Adelard died on January 2, 827, at the age of seventy-two. He was soon reverenced as a saint and miracles were a ributed to his intercession. Saint Adelard, pray for us! Budget: $ 20, Scholarship Fund Building Fund: $ 1, $ Budget: $ 2, GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE December 9, nd Sunday of Advent "In the fi eenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar...and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee...and Lysanias was tetrach of?" Did you need to pinch yourself awake during the first few lines of this Sunday's Gospel? John the Bap st received quite a prelude today as Luke described the religious and poli cal leadership of the me period. Scripture is divinely inspired, and we believe that everything that made it into the Bible is there for a reason. These lines remind us of an important truth. The Christmas story isn't a fairy tale or nursery rhyme. It's not a parable we say to give meaning to the holiday. At Christmas, God's presence is made tangible in a precise moment in me. The birth of Christ is a historical event. As precursor to Jesus' preaching, the ministry of John the Bap st is also a historical event. "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John's call to repentance and the forgiveness of sins happened in a par cular me and place. But that does not mean it is limited to first century Pales ne! God con nues to move in our daily lives. What we hear in today's Gospel - and what we an cipate at Christmas - occurs in our daily lives. God works in concrete ways in me and space. He did that 2,000 years ago, and He con nues to do so today! This Sunday, examine your own Christmas prepara ons. Is there anything you need to repent of before the Christmas season? Are there low points in your life, valleys to "be filled" by the love of God? Are their mountainous obstacles in your spiritual life? How can they be "made low"? Are you making decisions that have moved you away from God? This Advent season is the me for them to "be made straight and made smooth." Prepare the way in your heart for Christ today!. LPi
