3 From the Pastor Fr. Michael Rudolph Hand-clapping Trees When I first became a Christian and started reading the Bible more thoroughly, one part of it that blew me away was Isaiah Chapter 55. It still does. With beautiful language, the Prophet describes the delightfulness of life in relationship with God, His amazing love and mercy, the power of His Word on this earth, and the immense joy that springs from all of this. In fact, this joy is so great that human beings are not capable of expressing it all by themselves. It is as if all of nature must join in, if God is to be given due thanks and praise. And so, after Isaiah describes the human response to God: For you shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace, he adds these otherwise inexplicable words: the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. (Isaiah 55:12) The Book of Isaiah has been called the Fifth Gospel because so much of it even though written hundreds of years before Christ is, thanks to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, about the Messiah, Jesus Christ. This makes Isaiah great reading for Advent. I especially recommend Isaiah 9:6-7; 11:1-10; 35:1-10; 40:1-5; 42:1-4; 50:4-7; 53:1-12 and 55:1-13. If you listen to Handel s The Messiah so popular this time of year you will hear some of these verses. If Isaiah could experience such immense joy just predicting the Messiah, how much more should those of us who live since the arrival of Jesus Christ be overflowing with joy? Joy is the theme of this Sunday in the Church s liturgical calendar. That s why it s traditionally called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is Latin for Rejoice! Rejoice is what St. Paul writes to the Christians in Thessalonica, as we hear in this Sunday s Second Reading. The kind of joy he is referring to is available to everyone because it s not dependent on circumstances. In fact, St. Paul writes to the Thessalonians: You received the word in much affliction, with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 1:6) This joy no matter what is a mark of a true follower of Jesus Christ. It s not dependent on circumstances. It s a gift from God and goes along with both knowing about Jesus Christ and knowing Jesus Christ. This kind of joy called by St. Paul a fruit of the Holy Spirit remains a possession of God even after He has given it to us. You could say that we share it with God. Others see this joy, but we may or may not feel it. A great example is St. Teresa of Calcutta. For decades, she felt interior darkness even as others saw immense joy in her face. She wasn t putting on an act. She was totally surrendered to God, and so God used both her inner suffering and her outer joy to bring souls to Him. Early in her life as a Sister, she had made Jesus a promise to never deliberately refuse Him anything. He took her at her word, and so she was able to do something indescribably beautiful for God and for her fellow human beings. Another saint associated in a special way with joy is St. Philip Neri. In fact, he is known as the Apostle of Joy. Born in Florence, Italy in 1515, he moved to Rome and was ordained a priest. Rome at the time was a mess. It has been invaded a century before and much of it was still in ruins. The Church was broke. The Protestant Reformation was spreading dangerous spiritual ideas and the Renaissance was spreading culturally dangerous trends. Immorality was widespread among both clergy and lay people. Few people frequented the sacraments any more. Groups of unemployed and homeless children, teenagers and young men roamed the streets, often turning to crime to survive. But throughout all this, St. Philip concentrated on what was good, true and beautiful. He concentrated on befriending young gang members, taking care of hospital patients, celebrating the sacraments, and teaching the Faith to the ignorant. He formed the Oratory (meaning Place of Prayer ) where people from all walks of life and ages could come together for meals, friendship, casual conversion, prayer, study and singing. Some of the participants were educated, devout and holy. Others were uneducated, rough around the edges, and leading immoral lives. St. Philip welcomed and loved them all. Because of this and because of his constant joy people of all sorts were drawn to him and experienced beautiful conversions to become disciples of Jesus Christ. The concept of the oratory spread. By the Year 2000 there were at about 74 oratories in 17 countries. A new one is being formed right now in Northeast Minneapolis by a group of several young diocesan priests. Please keep these young men and their ministry in your prayers. The joy of Jesus Christ permeated the lives of St. Teresa of Calcutta and St. Phillip Neri, in different but similarly powerful ways. They rejoiced in Jesus Christ. God wants all people to rejoice at the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. He is our Hope and Salvation. Gaudete! Rejoice! Yours in Christ, Father Rudolph

4 Saint of the Day St. Samthann Samthann was an Irish woman who founded Clonbroney Abbey in County Longford. She is known for the wise advice she gave people in the form of short sayings. When a monk asked her in what attitude it was appropriate to pray, she replied that it was appropriate to pray in every position sitting, standing, kneeling or lying. Another monk told her that he proposed to give up study so he could pray more. Samthann told him that he would never be able to fix his mind on prayer if he neglected study. A third monk said he was going on a pilgrimage. She answered that the kingdom of heaven can be reached without crossing the sea and God is near to all who call on Him. Samthann was also known for wanting to live a simple lifestyle. She refused large grants of land for her abbey, and kept just six cows for the abbey herd. Samthann died around the year 739. 5 What Masses Do I Need To Attend on December 24/25? You may have noticed that the 4 th Sunday of Advent falls on December 24 th this year, which is also Christmas Eve, so if one attends Mass on Christmas Eve (Sunday), do they fulfill both their Sunday and Holy Day (Christmas) obligation? In other words, is it possible to get a twofer? In plain and simple English: No! Since we have an obligation to attend Mass on Sunday (4 th Sunday of Advent) and the Holy Day (Christmas) there are two obligations that need to be fulfilled. The liturgy for the 4 th Sunday of Advent is different from Christmas, but herein lies the confusion because the precept to attend Mass on Sunday does not apply to any specific liturgy on Sunday. For example: by going to Mass at 4:00pm on Christmas Eve, a person may fulfill their Sunday obligation if they have not already attended a Sunday Mass. However, they will need to attend another Mass at 10:00pm (Christmas Eve) or any Mass on Christmas Day to fulfill the requirement of attending Mass for the Holy Day. Masses: 5:30pm (Dec. 23) Fulfills the Sunday Obligation 8:30am (Dec. 24) Fulfills the Sunday Obligation 10:30am (Dec. 24) Fulfills the Sunday Obligation 4:00pm (Dec. 24) Fulfills the Sunday Obligation, if a Sunday Mass has not already been attended/fulfills the Holy Day Obligation if a Sunday Mass has already been attended 10:00pm (Dec. 24) - Fulfills the Sunday Obligation, if a Sunday Mass has not already been attended/fulfills the Holy Day Obligation if a Sunday Mass has already been attended 8:30 am (Dec. 25) Fulfills the Holy Day Obligation 10:30am (Dec. 25) Fulfills the Holy Day Obligation May God bless you and your family during these final days of Advent as we prepare our hearts and souls for the coming of Christ. Decorate the Church for Christmas Your help is needed on Dec 24th. We have limited time after the last Advent Mass at 10:30am and the first Christmas Eve mass at 4:00 pm to get the final Christmas decorations and Nativity Scene set up. 6 Principal s News As we are well into this school year, we are finding we have some elementary students who could use some one on one assistance with reading. If you or someone you know would be willing to volunteer to come to school 2-3 times per week to read with students, please have them call the school office ( ). We will coordinate the scheduling with the teachers. All volunteers, not yet E3 qualified, need to complete the essential three requirements; Code of Conduct, Virtus Training, and a background check. ~ In His Service, Doug Ballinger, Principal We have had many inquiries over the last few weeks from parishioners who would like to gift the parish or school something that we need during this holiday season. The Gift of Education is a powerful tool to provide a real and meaningful difference in the lives of our children. In a world where the hottest electronic or the latest toy is talked about and discarded once the newest one arrives; the gift of Catholic education is something that will last a lifetime. For 66 years, St. Raphael Catholic School has guided its students on a journey where academic excellence, a strong Catholic education, and a Christ-centered environment have been hallmarks of their daily experience. As we prepare our students for their next steps as future leaders and contributors to our local and global communities, in the business world, and in our Church, we must devote our attention to providing financial assistance to these students and families who seek out a Catholic school education. One way to do this is by supporting the Mr. J Scholarship fund, named after Mr. Dave Johnson (Mr. J), who has been a faith filled educator at St. Raphael for over 40 years. The Mr. J Scholarship Fund, has generously gifted over $75, per year for the last two school years to families who need the financial aid assistance. For us to help build financial bridges for school families, we are in great monetary need for the school year. With the grace of God and the assistance of generous donors, we will be able to continue to offer students the lasting gift of a Catholic education by affording qualified families tuition assistance. Donations to the Mr. J Scholarship Fund are tax -deductible and may be offered in the form of cash, check, bequests, gifts of stock, life insurance, real estate, appreciated assets, beneficiary arrangements, and required minimum distributions. Please visit the Parish Office to make contributions in person, envelopes are included in your monthly contribution packets and can be dropped into the offering baskets, payments can be made via the parish web site or contact Carrie Nelle at x 222. Keep Christ in Christ-mas Poster Contest: Christmas is often regarded as a secular holiday for many in our world. We so often forget that Christ-mas is the day when God gave us is greatest gift in the form of his only son. The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring the Keep Christ in Christ-mas (due date is December 21st) poster contest if you are interested please contact David Johnson the Knights of Columbus youth activity director at St. Raphael Catholic School at x 321 for more information. Timing of Giving for Taxes Please note that if you wish to have a donation credited for the 2017 tax year, we must have it in our possession by Sunday, December 31st. The date on a check does not matter for tax purposes. The date that governs which tax year that a donation goes to is the date that we receive it. If we receive a check in early January that was dated in December, it will be counted in the 2018 tax year. The popular IRA Charitable Rollover is now permanently available. This means that, if you are 70 1/2 or older, you may now direct distributions from your IRAs to qualified charities. This allows you to support our parishes without including this distribution in your taxable income. To make a charitable rollover and qualify for tax relief: The distribution must be made from a traditional IRA. The IRA owner must be 70 1/2 or older. The distribution must be paid directly from the IRA custodian to the church. The maximum distribution cannot exceed $100,000 per year. We ALWAYS recommend that you seek professional advice in these matters. However, if you have any questions for the parish, please contact Ginny Metzger, Parish Business Administrator at Gifts of stock are always appreciated and there are significant tax benefits available to those who give appreciated stock held longer than a year. Those who choose to donate stock are generally entitled to a tax deduction based on the full fair market value of the stock at the time the gift is made, not just the original cost. Additionally, donors do not incur any capital gains tax when stock is given away rather than sold. Please consider a stock gift when donating to the Church of St. Raphael, St. Raphael Catholic School or St. Raphael Faith and Legacy Foundation. If you are considering or planning a gift of stock for 2017, please make your year-end stock donations as soon as possible. Most transactions take only a few days to process, but there is the occasional one that can take a couple of weeks to pass through the process. Please contact Ginny Metzger at for our routing numbers.
