3 Holy Extravagance There s a kind of extravagance that is selfish. It s self-promoting, self-indulgent, or neglectful of the poor. An example is the extravagance of the rich man in the story Jesus told, who feasted sumptuously every day while ignoring the poor man Lazarus, who was sick and hungry and lay at his gate. (Luke 16:19-31) It s sinful extravagance to have more than we need when others don t have enough. Along these lines, I think of the words of Saint John the Baptist. The crowds asked him, What should we do? He responded, He has two coats, let him share with him who has none, and he who has food, let him do likewise. (Luke 3:10-11) I think the same could be said to those who have multiple homes or cars or just about anything else you can think of, when there is not a serious need for them all. It s true that sometimes it is good to have more than one of something. Like the kind of clothing that you change daily, such as socks. It could be a waste of time, water and detergent to have to do laundry more than once a week. And having only one shoe won t do most of us much good. Those of us with two feet need a pair. But in general, as Americans many of us have more possessions than we really need. Meanwhile, Lazarus is waiting for us to notice him. So is Jesus, in numerous disguises. Another kind of unholy extravagance is the publicizing of the names of persons who give of large amounts of money. Sometimes this is seen when millionaires or billionaires give tens of millions of dollars to a university or other organization. Whether the donor or the receiving institution publicizes the gift, it would be better if it were all done anonymously. This would better respond the words of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: When you give alms, do not let your right hand know what your left is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:3-4) At the same time, I think it s OK to publicly praise someone who has died, or to thank groups of people in a way that doesn t say which individuals did the giving. On the other hand, there is a kind of extravagance that is holy. This is the extravagance of love. God sets the example. We see it in nature. God created thousands of different species of birds, butterflies, plants and animals for us to enjoy. Even rocks, dirt and sand are beautiful and of many different kinds and colors. And there s the infinite variety of clouds in the sky. Every human being is different, and beautiful in his or her own way. God is extravagant in his gift of beauty all around us. The Incarnation of the Son of God was also extravagant love. God didn t have to take on a human nature. But He did, to live among us, teach, heal, establish the Church and the sacraments, show us how to suffer and die, and rise from the dead. We human beings can engage in holy extravagance too. Sacred Scripture lifts up for us many examples of this. There is the poor widow who puts all her money into the treasury of the temple. (Mark 12:41-44) There are the first believers in Jesus, who don t call anything they possess their own, but have everything in common. (Acts 4:32) There are the seven brothers who undergo torture and death rather than break God s law. (2 Maccabees 7:1-42) The lives of the saints provide countless other examples of holy extravagance in love of God and neighbor. Religious architecture and art is another form of holy extravagance. Some people criticize the Church for having built beautiful cathedrals and other churches, and for decorating them with marble, stained glass, statues, paintings, and other forms of art. They claim that it s a waste of money, that could have been better spent on the poor. This is a most unfortunate point of view. The poor benefit from sacred architecture and art as much as anyone else. In fact, maybe more. Wealthier people can put art in their own homes, or pay the admission fee to enter art museums. But anyone can go enjoy the beauty of a church, outside and inside, free of charge. A homeless person in Rome who sleeps in a doorway can get up in the morning and go into Saint Peter s Basilica to feast their eyes on the dazzling beauty, have their hearts lifted up to the beauty of God, and commune with Him in their hearts in prayer. The Church provides the same opportunities for people with no money as for billionaires. The building of churches and production of sacred art also provides jobs for miners, quarry workers, stonemasons, carpenters, architects, plumbers, electricians, laborers, makers of stained glass, painters and sculptors. Holy generosity flows from God and through His people. By God s grace, it is Christians who have built and staffed not only cathedrals but also hospitals, orphanages, hostels for pilgrims, schools, nursing homes, homeless shelters and homes for battered women, AIDS victims, chronic alcoholics, drug addicts, recovering prostitutes, the mentally ill and those who are dying. Let s thank God for His amazing and holy extravagance to us, and for the privilege of being able to follow His example. Sincerely in Christ, Father Rudolph

4 Saint of the Day Blessed Robert of Knaresborough Robert was born around 1160 in York, England. He was convinced from an early age that God was calling him to some kind of life that was dedicated to Him. He started training for the priesthood, but when he reached the sub deaconate he decided instead to follow his brother into the Cistercian Abbey at Morpeth. After less than five months there as a monk he discerned that that was not his calling either. At the same time, his desire to dedicate his life totally to God was as strong as ever. He gave up his inheritance rights as the oldest son in his family and went to live in a cave next to a chapel dedicated to Saint Giles, close to the River Nidd and fifteen miles from York. For a while, Robert shared his cave with a knight who was on the run from King Richard I, but he was able to live alone again after the king died and the knight was able to return to his wife. After some years a wealthy widow named Helen offered Robert a cell and chapel dedicated to Saint Hilda at Rudfarlington. He accepted, glad of the opportunity to move deeper into the forest. But after this hermitage of his was raided and destroyed by bandits, he spent a few months living by the wall of a church, then, to avoid attention he was getting as a man of God, he moved into the priory at Hedley. There he soon became unpopular with the monks because of his criticism of their lax interpretation of the Rule of Saint Benedict. So he moved back to Rudfarlington. Here his widow patroness gave him a barn and some other buildings, some land and four deer. Things went well until a local judge named William accused him of giving shelter to thieves and other outlaws. This accusation may have been true because Robert was known for his charity to those in need. William had Robert s buildings pulled down and, when Robert fled to his original hermitage by St. Giles Chapel, he pursued him there. Then William had a dream in which his life was threatened because of how he had been treating the hermit. So instead of arresting Robert, he gave him some land, two horses, two oxen and two cows. After that Robert was left in peace. Many people came to him for advice. At some point he was joined in his hermit life by a man named Yves. Yves learned from Robert that a hermit s first duty, after his own sanctification, was to care for the poor. Robert helped all who came to him, working hard on his land to grow food to provide for them. He died in Blessed Robert of Knaresborough, pray for us! Fr. Altier s Latin Class In the Twin Cities there are three Eastern Rite Catholic Churches: Ukrainian, Maronite, and Ruthenian. Following the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, each has allowed Mass to be celebrated in English while preserving their proper heritage: Ukrainian, Aramaic, and Old Slavonic respectively. As members of the Latin Rite of the Church Vatican II said the use of the Latin language, with due respect to the particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites. If you would like to learn some liturgical Latin, Fr. Altier will teach a six week class covering the Mass parts, the Rosary, Marian Antiphons, and more in Marian Hall on Tuesday evenings, 7:00-8:00, October 3, 10, and 17, and November 7, 14, and 21 (October 24 is the Feast of St. Raphael and an Extraordinary Form Latin High Mass; October 31 is the Vigil of All Saints). 6 Two-Part Fatima Movies Series October 2 & October 9, 2017 at 7pm in Marian Hall From May through October in 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. These incredible events were witnessed by tens of thousands of people and are considered the most prophetic revelations of the 20th century. Part I-This family movie recreates the 1917 events that brought hope & religious fervor to a war-ravaged world. This movie is truly inspirational and presents a wonderful opportunity to deepen your faith & the faith of your children. (Children are welcome). Part II-Today the message of Fatima is more relevant than ever before. Come and learn the truth of the events, the importance of Mary s message and what Mary is asking each one of us to do for our own and the world's conversion. (This portion is most appropriate for adults and older children). Because the message of Fatima is so significant for our times, it is imperative we tell everyone about the Lady who came from Heaven to give us the plan for peace.
