4 Pastor s Page Fr. Michael Rudolph Convicted Someone once asked, rhetorically, If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you? In other words, would other people find it easy to believe that we were Christians or would our words and actions make them doubtful? The key to living a truly Christian life is to say Yes to God s invitation to come to the wedding feast of Jesus Christ not as a spectator, but as a member of the Church, the Bride of Christ. This means a life of loving, faithful, fruitful union with Jesus Christ. Pope Francis referred to this life in a homily he gave on October 15, 2017, on the occasion of his declaring 35 individuals to be saints. Here is part of his homily: Such is the Christian life, a love story with God. The Lord freely takes the initiative and no one can claim to be the only one invited. No one has a better seat than anyone else, for all enjoy God s favor. The Christian life is always born and reborn of this tender, special and privileged love. We can ask ourselves if at least once a day we tell the Lord that we love him; if we remember, among everything else we say, to tell him daily, Lord, I love you; you are my life. Because once love is lost, the Christian life becomes empty. It becomes a body without a soul, an impossible ethic, a collection of rules and laws to obey for no good reason. The God of life, however, awaits a response of life. The Lord of love awaits a response of love. Speaking to one of the Churches in the Book of Revelation, God makes an explicit reproach: You have abandoned your first love (cf. Rev 2:4). This is the danger a Christian life that becomes routine, content with normality, without drive or enthusiasm, and with a short memory. Instead, let us fan into flame the memory of our first love. We are the beloved, the guests at the wedding, and our life is a gift, because every day is a wonderful opportunity to respond to God s invitation. The Gospel, however, warns us that the invitation can be refused. Many of the invited guests said no, because they were caught up in their own affairs. They made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business (Mt 22:5). Each was concerned with his own affairs; this is the key to understanding why they refused the invitation. The guests did not think that the wedding feast would be dreary or boring; they simply made light of it. They were caught up in their own affairs. They were more interested in having something rather than in risking something, as love demands. This is how love grows cold, not out of malice but out of a preference for what is our own: our security, our self-affirmation, our comfort We settle into the easy chair of profits, pleasures, or a hobby that brings us some happiness. And we end up aging badly and quickly, because we grow old inside. When our hearts do not expand, they become closed in on themselves. When everything depends on me on what I like, on what serves me best, on what I want then I become harsh and unbending. I lash out at people for no reason, like the guests in the Gospel, who treated shamefully and ultimately killed (cf. v. 6) those sent to deliver the invitation, simply because they were bothering them. The Gospel asks us, then, where we stand: with ourselves or with God? Because God is the opposite of selfishness, of self-absorption. The Gospel tells us that, even before constant rejection and indifference on the part of those whom he invites, God does not cancel the wedding feast. He does not give up, but continues to invite. When he hears a no, he does not close the door, but broadens the invitation. In the face of wrongs, he responds with an even greater love. When we are hurt by the unfair treatment of others or their rejection, we frequently harbor grudges and resentment. God on the other hand, while hurt by our no, tries again; he keeps doing good even for those who do evil. Because this is what love does. Because this is the only way that evil is defeated. Today our God, who never abandons hope, tells us to do what he does, to live in true love, to overcome resignation and the whims of our peevish and lazy selves. [ ] We need to put on God s love and to renew our choice for him daily. The Saints who were canonized today, and especially the many martyrs, point the way. They did not say a fleeting yes to love; they said yes with their lives and to the very end. The robe they wore daily was the love of Jesus, that mad love that loved us to the end and offered his forgiveness and his robe to those who crucified him. At baptism we received a white robe, the wedding garment for God. Let us ask him, through the intercession of the saints, our brothers and sisters, for the grace to decide daily to put on this garment and to keep it spotless. How can we do this? Above all, by approaching the Lord fearlessly in order to receive his forgiveness. This is the one step that counts, for entering into the wedding hall to celebrate with him the feast of love. [Original text: Italian] [Translation by the Holy See] Libreria Editrice Vaticana [Courtesy of Zenit.org] May the Blessed Virgin Mary, who in love offered her own life up to God in union with Christ s loving self-offering on the cross, help us by her prayers to do the same. ~~ Yours in Christ, Father Rudolph

5 Saint of the Day Donatus of Fiesole Donatus, also called Donat and Dino, was an Irish monk who went on a pilgrimage to Rome in the early ninth century. On his way back he stopped in the Italian city of Fiesole, right at the time when the clergy and other people of the town were gathered at the cathedral to elect a new bishop. The story has come down to us that as Donatus entered the cathedral, the bells began to ring and the candles lit up without any human agency. This was taken as a sign from God that Donatus should be elected bishop, and he was. This was about the year 829. He was evidently a wise man, because he was asked to join the pope and the king in deciding what to do with regard to a dispute between two other bishops. Donatus was also brave; on one occasion, at the request of the king, he led an army into battle against Muslims who had invaded southern Italy. Donatus like to write, too. One of his poems was about the beauty of the Irish countryside. He also composed a biography of Saint Brigid of Ireland, and dedicated a hostel he built for Irish pilgrims to her. He died about 876. His relics are still in the cathedral of Fiesole. Saint Donatus of Fiesole, pray for us! God has given each of us 168 hours a week. He has given us free will to choose how we use that time. These gifts alone could take an hour to thank for each week. Repay to God what belongs to God. (Matthew 22:21) If you find that you are being called to make a commitment to one hour of prayer each week, there are urgent needs for Adorers on Sundays from 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. and Wednesdays 4:00-5:00 a.m.. You choose whatever hour works best in your life, just choose one. There is also a great need for substitutes in the winter months, as some Adorers travel to warmer climates. 7 Leaves are falling! It s time for the St. Raphael School Rake-a-thon! On Saturday, October 28, St. Raphael students, parents, and teachers will be going out to rake the yards of people who are elderly, handicapped, or who, for a variety of reasons are experiencing difficulty in getting their yard clear of leaves. There is no charge, we rake the yards for free. This is also one for our school s biggest annual fundraisers The Rake-a-thon s monetary goal this year is $25,000; There will be special Rake-a-thon donation envelopes at either end of each pew in the church during the month of October. Please know that every cent of your Rake-a-thon donation will go directly to St. Raphael school in the effort to keep the cost of Catholic education affordable. We hope that you will prayerfully consider helping our school with a donation of any amount. You may place the envelopes in the regular church collection baskets at all weekend Masses in October. You will also find paper prayer leaves with the envelopes in the pews. Whether you donate money or not, we invite you to write out a special prayer intention on one of the paper leaves. Place the leaves in the collection baskets at Mass. The leaves will be put onto a special prayer tree located outside of Marion Hall in the church. This prayer tree will be in place for the entire month of October, so that all of our schoolchildren and parishioners can pray for your intentions. We d like to send a special thank you to Robert Sullivan, an Alumni Student of the class of 1983 at Saint Raphael Catholic School. Bob donated 250 Homecoming beads and our students loved them! We d also like to thank all volunteers and everyone who attended to make our Homecoming event a success. Attention: Alumni of St. Raphael Catholic School A Catholic education is an appealing alternative to many students and families. Students who are interested in and attend Catholic schools often prefer the smaller class size and appreciate going to a value-based institution. According to a 2014 Department of Education report, students who attend a parochial elementary or high school are twice as likely to graduate from college than those who attended public schools. Catholic schools are often the obvious choice for parents, as Catholic institutions also have much higher retention rates than other schools, in some cases, of over 83%. Their main drawback, however, is that they are often far more expensive than public schools, and this can create an obstacle for those seeking to attend a Catholic institution. That s where the Mr. J Scholarship Foundation steps in for the students and families of St. Raphael Catholic School! Mr. David Johnson, affectionately known as Mr. J, has been a teacher and coach at St. Raphael Catholic School for over 40 years. In this time, he has influenced so many student's lives in a positive way for a lifetime, as only a teacher can, by fostering optimism and confidence, providing knowledge, developing dedication, character, promise, determination, and the desire to apply those qualities to their God-given callings. Through his grace and virtues, he has helped all students grow in their faith! Several years ago, we had the pleasure of developing the Mr. J Scholarship Foundation, and with generous donations from our parishioners have helped many families of St. Raphael Catholic School make a Catholic education an achievable goal. Our Catholic faith believes strongly in community service, and helping its members, both in parish and school. Our church also values tradition, and gives 100% of this scholarship money to students with the intent of upholding Catholic tradition in the future. We have recently made a few cosmetic updates to the Mr. J Scholarship Fund contribution envelopes that are sent to your homes. They are now GREEN. Please prayerfully consider donating to this important scholarship fund, so that we can continue to provide opportunities to all families who are in search of a Catholic school education at St. Raphael Catholic School for years to come! Please visit our school s website and update your contact information. We would love to hear from you! Web site:
