3 canonized, but who are living saints in our midst. Watching and Listening Blessed Paul VI wrote, Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses. I think this has also been true throughout history, including in the early Church. The Book of Acts, which we hear from during Mass during the Easter Season, has numerous accounts of conversions due to the teaching of the apostles, who were also witnesses, in more ways than one. They were witnesses because they had gotten to know the Lord Jesus Christ before his death, because they had seen Him after His Resurrection, because the Lord did miracles through them, and because the way they lived showed that they took the words of Jesus seriously and had been transformed by Him. For example, in this Sunday s First Reading, we are brought to the day of Pentecost. After the spectacular public event of the disciples of Jesus speaking in languages they didn t know, but which were understood by pilgrims from other countries, Peter gave a speech to those who had witnessed the miracle. About three thousand people who were receptive to his words were baptized that same day. We read that they devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one s needs. (Acts 2:1-45) Some of the friends and family members of these new converts probably had questions like, What has gotten into them? Hopefully they realized before long that what had gotten into them was faith in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This changed how they lived as well as how they spoke. And so people paid attention. And many of them converted too. This has been going on steadily ever since then, so that now there are estimated to be over 2 billion Christians in the world, about one third of the world s population. That s great, but the stated goal of Jesus Christ is that all people be baptized and become His disciples (Matthew 28:16-20). Each one of us has an important role to play in Our Lord s loving plan. This role has various names becoming saints answering the universal call to holiness being missionary disciples. How do we live this role? Looking at how others have done it can give us some clues. Like the irst Christians, described in the Book of Acts. And the saints of the Church. And we all know I hope holy men and women, not yet If we fail to answer the call of Christ to become saints, holy men and women, missionary disciples then fewer people will respond to the Good News of Jesus Christ because there will be fewer credible witnesses to Him. I m reminded of a story I read about the great Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi often quoted from the Gospels, especially the Sermon on the Mount. The teachings of Jesus about loving one s enemies and turning the other cheek were very in luential on Gandhi s own teachings and life, including leading his nation in nonviolent resistance to British rule and to achieving independence without bloodshed. Yet, as far as we know, Gandhi remained a Hindu. A missionary once asked him, Mr. Gandhi, though you quote the words of Christ often, why is it that you appear to so adamantly reject becoming his follower? Gandhi replied, Oh, I don t reject your Christ. I love your Christ. It is just that so many of you Christians are so unlike your Christ. Thankfully, there are also many Christians who are Christlike. If there were not, I would probably not have become a Christian myself. Before I became a Christian there were people who helped me out personally in many ways when I needed it with friendship, food, words of truth and hope, and in other ways. Others helped me with their witness of taking the words of Christ seriously. For example, once I had hitch-hiked to New Orleans and was relaxing in a park there. I was trying to learn how to play the banjo at the time, and was practicing on the one I had brought with me from Minnesota. Several young people came up to me and engaged me in conversation. They said they had been reading the Bible, and were trying to live as Jesus said. I don t remember their exact words this was about forty years ago but I think they referred to Our Lord saying, If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me They told me that after reading those words, they sold their possessions, gave the money away, and moved into an apartment together, where they had no furniture. They asked if I wanted to come to their home and play the banjo for them. I declined their kind invitation, but their words, and most of all their actions, made a big impression on me. I m sure that the witness of these young people to me was a big factor in my own conversion to Jesus Christ a few years after that. Every day God gives us opportunities to be witnesses to him. What we say is important, but how we live has more impact. With God s help, may we join the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us (Hebrews 12:1), drawing people to the Risen Lord Jesus Christ, who continues to live and work among us. Easter blessings, Father Rudolph

From the Musicians... Above the wooden hymn boards in church you may have noticed the new boxes which lash red numbers during Mass. These will be used to indicate the hymns for each part of the Mass. The wooden hymn boards will have the numbers for the Glory to God in the Highest, Holy, Holy, Holy, Memorial Acclamation, and Lamb of God. The new red numbers will allow the musicians more lexibility in selecting or changing hymns for each of the Masses. We hope they help you. Let us know what you think. Thanks. Respectful Disposal of Blessed Palms Blessed palms may be burned and returned to the earth simply buried. If you are unable to burn or bury the palms yourself, you may drop them off in the parish of ice or in the marked collection container in the East Gathering Area. He was acquainted with St. Francis of Assisi, and admired him, but was too shy to approach him. Finally, when two of his friends, Bernard and Peter, became followers of Francis, Giles overcame his hesitation and asked if he, too, could join them in their life of poverty. He received the habit of the Friars Minor in He accompanied Francis on his early preaching campaigns and then went on a pilgrimage to Compostela in Spain. He developed the habit of always trying to do some work in return for the alms he received, and when he was sent to Rome after his return from Compostela, in exchange for alms the friars practiced begging for their own needs and those of the poor Giles chopped wood and drew water from wells. Once the cardinal bishop of Tusculum invited him to dinner. He accepted on the condition that he could work in the ields of the cardinal to repay his hospitality. It turned out to be too wet outside to do so, so he worked in the cardinal s kitchen instead. Giles spent the years 1215 to 1219 as a hermit at Favorone, near Assisi. Then after a visit to the Holy Land he went to Tunis to preach to the Muslims, without any apparent success. He returned to Italy and spent the rest of his life there. Giles had little formal education, but many people approached him for advice. He also had a rich prayer life and eventually experienced frequent ecstasies while praying. In 1226 Giles had a vision of Our Lord, which he described as his fourth birth, the others being his birthday, his baptism, and the day he received his habit. Giles died in Perugia in the year St. Francis had been particularly fond of him, and called him a knight of the round table. Blessed Giles of Assisi, pray for us!
