3 Today we enter more deeply into the Lenten season, into what is called Passiontide. Traditionally, all cruci ixes, statues, pictures, or other items that are beautiful would be either removed or covered in purple cloth. Everything in the Mass becomes more focused on the suffering and death of our Lord, hence, there is a death of sorts to our senses so that we can spiritually unite ourselves with our Lord in His Passion. While there are many elements of the Passion that could be elaborated on at some length, I want to call our attention to one piece that has been misunderstood by people for years. This point is a phrase spoken by our Lord from the Cross: My God, My God, why have You forsaken me? In the spiritual life it is common that a soul feels abandoned by God. While everyone experiences this to some degree, what is most remarkable about this is that it is the souls that are the most elevated who have to endure this the most acutely. Has God actually abandoned the soul? No. What God does is to remove the feeling of His presence, so the individual feels abandoned, but God has certainly not abandoned the person. If this is true of the Saints, it is in initely more so regarding our Lord since He is God and could not abandon Himself. In His human nature our Lord may well have felt abandoned, but obviously, He was not. So, why did He say this? There are two reasons. First of all, He was praying. These words constitute the irst line of Psalm 22 (21 according to the Vulgate system). Even to this day, when the Monks or Nuns chant the Psalms, the Cantor intones the irst line, then everyone else joins in to sing the rest of the Psalm. Traditionally, rather than referring to Psalms according to their number, each Psalm was known by its irst line. What all of this means, is that the intonation of irst line of the Psalm implies that the entire Psalm is included. Second, our Lord chose to use this Psalm on the Cross because it described what He was enduring. Not only did it address the feelings of being abandoned, but it describes in some detail what happens when a person is cruci ied. I have often wondered what King David saw or experienced that would have inspired him to write this Psalm nearly a thousand years before some deranged individual came up with the idea of killing people by cruci ixion. Some of the lines from Psalm 22 include: All who see me mock me, they make mouths at me and wag their heads; all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax, it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; Thou dost lay me in the dust of death; A company of evildoers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and feet I can count all my bones they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my raiment they cast lots. Interspersed among these passages are statements of faith and hope. The Psalm ends very positively, speaking about how the nations will know and serve the Lord. So, far from a cry of anger and despair, which our Lord appears to be at irst glance, they are in fact, words of prayer, faith, praise, and worship. As we listen to these words in the Gospel readings next Sunday and on Good Friday, we need to remember what they are: they re lect the human feeling of being abandoned, but in the midst of that feeling, faith prevails. You and I will go through very dif icult times in our lives. We wonder why God would allow such a thing. Even worse, we wonder if He has abandoned us because of our sinfulness. Such thoughts and feelings are natural in the midst of our struggles, but we have to look to the supernatural gifts of faith, hope and charity at those moments and follow the example of our Lord: acknowledge our pain, but profess our abiding faith in God and His love. Remember, from the Passion comes salvation, from death comes life, from the Cross comes the resurrection. This is the pattern established by our Lord and it continues to this day in the members of His Mystical Body. Our sufferings are meant to lead us to something far greater. Our sufferings are a participation in the suffering of Christ and will lead to a participation in His glory. ~ Fr. Robert Altier Today, Sunday, April 2 3 pm in the Main Church Holy Thursday - April 13-7 pm Good Friday - April 14-3 pm & 7 pm Easter Vigil - April 15-8:30 pm Easter Sunday - April 16-8:30 & 10:30 am

5 Saint of the Day Blessed Catherine of Pallanza Catherine was born in Pallanza, a small village in northern Italy, around the year All the rest of her family died in an epidemic of the plague when she was still young, and she was adopted by a lady who lived in the nearby city of Milan. When she was about ifteen she heard a homily about the sufferings of Our Lord that affected her so deeply that she decided to consecrate the rest of her life to His service. She withdrew to a wild mountainous area that had often been used by hermits, joining a group of woman hermits under the direction of a priest in charge of a shrine there. Catherine lived an austere life. She fasted ten months of the year and for food depended on whatever was brought to her by people who came seeking her prayers and advice. She wanted to live alone but was joined by ive other women, whom she eventually established as a religious community under a rule inspired by St. Augustine and St. Ambrose. Their convent was dedicated to Our Lady of the Mountain, and the sisters were allowed to wear the habit of the Poor Clares. Catherine served as prioress there for two years before her death in In the 1730 s her remains were moved to a special chapel built in her honor, and are still venerated there today. Blessed Catherine of Pallanza, pray for us!
