3 To Cheer or Jeer Jesus Christ provoked very different reactions in the week leading up to Passover. On the one hand, there were those who welcomed him as the Messiah, and the woman who broke her alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head. On the other hand, there were the chief priests, elders and scribes, who said that Jesus was a blasphemer who deserved to die. What is our response to Jesus? We might say We are Christians. We love Jesus, and would never abandon him to torture and death. We are one with the crowd cheering for Jesus. That s why this Sunday we carry our palm branches and sing praise to the Lord. But before we get too complacent, I encourage us to look at our response to Jesus in light of these words of his: Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me (Matthew 25:40) and Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me. (Matthew 25:45) Who are the least of these? We don t have to go far to ind them. They are the unborn. Women and girls whose boyfriends get them pregnant and then leave them. Immigrants and exiles. Victims of terrorism, human traf icking, crime, gangs, oppression, racism, gossip, injustice, abuse and natural disasters. Prisoners and exconvicts. Those who are sick and lonely. The homeless. Those without adequate food or medical care. Addicts. Anyone who is ignored, despised or rejected. People tricked by Satan into becoming terrorists. All of them need our prayers, help, love and forgiveness. Do we give it to them? That would please Our Lord Jesus Christ even more than holding palm branches in his honor. One particular group of the least of these our those who have committed crimes. Judging from our national and state laws, there seems to be an unfortunate trend to try to distance ourselves more and more from those who have been found guilty of crimes. Examples are the numerous laws that have been passed mandating long minimum sentences for certain crimes. And preventing people with felony records from voting, and in some cases, making it hard for them to ind a place to live or get a job. I understand people wanting to protect themselves and their loved ones from danger. But are life sentences and capital punishment really necessary or Christian? Pope Francis had some thought provoking things to say on this topic. Here are some excerpts from a letter he handed to the President of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty, Federico Mayor, on March 20, 2015: Today the death penalty is inadmissible, no matter how serious the crime of the condemned. It is an offense against the inviolability of life and the dignity of the human person that contradicts God s plan for man and society and His merciful justice, and it impedes ful illing the just end of the punishments. It does not do justice to the victims, but foments vengeance. For a State of Law, the death penalty represents a failure, because it obliges it to kill in the name of justice. Dostoevsky wrote: To kill one who killed is an incomparably greater punishment than the crime itself. Killing in virtue of a sentence is far worse than the killing committed by a criminal. Justice will never be reached by killing a human being. On the other hand, the punishment of life imprisonment, as well as those that because of their duration entail the possibility for the one punished to plan a future in freedom, can be considered veiled death penalties, because with them the culprit is not deprived of freedom but there is an attempt to deprive him of hope. However, although the criminal system can take away time from the culprits, it can never take away their hope. the death penalty implies the denial of love to enemies, preached in the Gospel. All Christians and all men of good will are obliged not only to ight for the abolition of the death penalty, legal or illegal, and in all its forms, but also for prison conditions to be better, in respect of the human dignity of the persons deprived of freedom. On the same topic, there is in interesting article in the Pioneer Press newspaper, in the March 22, 2015 edition. It quotes research indicating that the vast majority of violent criminals mature out of their criminal tendencies by the time they are in their thirties, and that long sentences often do more harm than good. May we all imitate God s mercy, and not crucify Christ again. May you have a very blessed Holy Week! ~ Father Rudolph Saints, Popes and Life "That special power of loving that belongs to a woman is seen most clearly when she becomes a mother. Motherhood is the gift of God to women. How grateful we must be to God for this wonderful gift that brings such joy to the whole world, women and men alike! Yet we can destroy this gift of motherhood, especially by the evil of abortion, but also by thinking that other things like jobs or positions are more important than loving, than giving oneself to others. No job, no plans, no possessions, no idea of "freedom" can take the place of love. So anything that destroys God's gift of motherhood destroys His most precious gift to women-- the ability to love as a woman." ~ St. Teresa of Calcutta

5 Saint of the Day Saint Hesychius of Jersusalem Hesychius was born in the latter part of the 4 th century and was a monk, hermit and priest in Jerusalem. He wrote a commentary on the whole Bible, but the only parts of that we still have today are his commentaries on Leviticus, the Psalms and parts of Job and the Prophets. He called Sacred Scripture perfect wisdom, the point of departure and the point of arrival, to which the whole of our existence should be conformed. In writing about the Bible, he highlighted the connection between it and the Liturgy. His writings reveal the harmony between Catholic traditions, practices and beliefs in his lifetime and now, sixteen hundred years later. For example, he describes the Easter Candle, acclaims the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and af irms that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Christ. He also refers to the practice of Mass being celebrated every day, when he writes, Keep yourself free from sin so that every day you may share in the mystic meal; by doing so our bodies become the body of Christ. Saint Hesychius of Jerusalem, pray for us! 8 Novena of Divine Mercy April 14 - April 23 Jesus asked that the Feast of the Divine Mercy (April 23) be preceded by a nine-day Novena to the Divine Mercy which would begin on Good Friday (April 14). He gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena, saving for the last day the most dif icult intention of all, the lukewarm and indifferent of whom He said: "These souls cause Me more suffering than any others; it was from such souls that My soul felt the most revulsion in the Garden of Olives. It was on their account that I said: 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass Me by.' The last hope of salvation for them is to lee to My Mercy." In her diary, St. Faustina wrote that Jesus told her: "On each day of the novena you will bring to My heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy... On each day you will beg My Father, on the strength of My passion, for the graces for these souls." Novena pamphlets can be found at all entrances of the church. Pray for God s mercy for our families, our country, and the world.
