3 I saw an article the other day in which it was mentioned that a group of Bishops and Theologians have petitioned the Pope to grant to our Blessed Lady a new title: Coredemptrix. This title is not new in the sense of being something novel. In fact, the title has been used for many years to describe our Lady s role in union with our Lord s work of redemption. What this group is asking is that the title would be made of icial and dogmatic. By dogmatic is meant infallible. There are already four dogmas regarding the Blessed Mother. It has been infallibly de ined that Mary is the Mother of God, that she is a perpetual virgin, that she was immaculately conceived, and that she was assumed into Heaven. This group is asking that a ifth dogma regarding our Lady would be added. The title of Coredemptrix is actually used in some of icial Church documents, including Lumen gentium, the central document of the Second Vatican Council. I mention this to reiterate that the concept and the title are not new, but they have never been infallibly stated. It should also be understood that this group is not the irst to seek this dogmatic de inition. Many groups and individuals have petitioned the Holy See over the past number of decades seeking this same action. Pope St. John Paul II convened a committee to study this question over thirty years ago. It was determined at that time that the theology was not fully worked out to the point that the doctrine could be raised to the level of dogma. Another group petitioned Pope Benedict seeking this same action, and now we see it again. This is normal in the way the Church works. In each of the two most recent dogmatic pronouncements (the Immaculate Conception in 1854 and the Assumption is 1950) the Popes have mentioned the number of Cardinals, Bishops, priests, and lay persons who have petitioned Rome during the century or so prior to the de inition being made. Will this latest petition be the one that will bring about the desired result? We will have to wait to see. In the meantime, we do have to ask what this title actually Rosary Society President: Kathy Williams The Rosary Society will meet on Saturday, February 11, after 8 am Mass, in the Conference Room. Karen Sester from the Cana Family Institute will be our speaker. Refreshments will be served. All ladies are welcome. Holy Name Society This Saturday, February 11th, will be the regular monthly rosary, Mass and meeting of the Holy Name Society. The rosary starts at 7:40 am, with Mass at 8 am, and a meeting following the Mass. We sit in the irst three pews on the left side of the north wing. Refreshments will be served at the meeting. One does not have to be an inducted member to attend. All are welcome. means. After all, when we use the pre ix, co, it means equal. For instance, co-chairs imply that two or more persons are considered equal in the position of chairing a particular committee. This is not what the term means in Latin. I should also mention the main part of the title: in Latin trix is a feminine ending. In this case Redemptor is the masculine form of Redeemer; Redemptrix is a feminine form of the same word. This is why it is so important to understand the title correctly. It does not mean that our Lady is equal with our Lord in the work of redemption. In Latin, co is a form of cum which means with. Again, we need to be careful because the English idea that would be suggested by this is that what Jesus did was not suf icient or that He somehow needed help to bring about our redemption. No, Jesus and He alone is the Redeemer. What this title implies is that Mary gave her entire life to the service of the Redeemer and, at the Cross, she suffered and sacri iced with Him. This said, it needs to be made clear that Jesus alone offered the sacri ice of atonement on the Cross. In case there is still some concern about this, especially with the idea that something is being taken away from Jesus and the work He did for us, we need to remember that all of us are co-redeemers with Christ. St. Paul says in Col 1:24 that he makes up in his body for what is lacking in the suffering of Christ for the sake of His Body, the Church. Jesus granted to the members of His Mystical Body the grace to participate in the work of redemption. When we unite our prayers and sufferings with His, we have a share in the work of salvation and redemption. So, if you and I can, in this sense, be co-redeemers with Christ, how much more can this be said of Mary without whom there would be no Redeemer. Her double iat (let it be) at the Annunciation and at the Cross place her in a unique role in the work of redemption and make her worthy of a special title that signi ies her sel less love as the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of all the Redeemed. ~ Fr. 4 Our parish is now conducting the 2017 Catholic Services Appeal for the 17 Collective Ministries of the Archdiocese that no one parish can support on its own. The CSA recognizes each parish itself as a ministry integral to the daily life of the Archdiocese. Our parish really is our second home; we see our brothers and sisters in Christ every week as together we celebrate the Mass. It is also where we are prepared and supported as disciples to go forth to preach the Gospel. Thus, our parish is a bene ited ministry of the CSA; we receive 25% of the dollars we collect in our parish if we reach our parish goal. Please prayerfully consider making a pledge to help us reach our goal! The 17 Collective Ministries served by the Catholic Services Appeal are: American Indian Ministry; Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) ; Campus Ministry Newman Center; Campus Ministry Saint Paul s Outreach; Catholic Charities; Deaf Ministry; Elementary Schools; Evangelization and Catechesis; High School Scholarships; Hospital Chaplains; Latino Ministry; Marriage, Family and Life; Parishes; Prison Chaplains; Saint John Vianney College Seminary; The Saint Paul Seminary; Venezuelan Mission. Saint of the Day ~ St. Adelheid of Vilich Adelheid (or Adelaide, to use an English version of her name) was born around the year 960 in Germany. Her father, Count Megengose of Guelder, founded two convents, Vilich on the Rhine River near the city of Cologne, and Saint Mary s in Cologne. Adelheid was abbess of both. She introduced the Rule of Saint Benedict to Vilich about the year Saint Heribert, the Archbishop of Cologne, had great respect for her and consulted her often. Adelheid made sure that her nuns were educated well and learned Latin so that they could understand the prayers they were chanting in the Liturgy of the Hours. She also made great efforts to help feed the poor during a famine. After her death around the year 1015, she was buried in Vilich, where she is still honored. People pray to her for her intercession for diseases of the eye. Her tomb has disappeared, but there is still a healing spring where it once stood. Saint Adelheid of Vilich, pray for us!
