2 Saint of the Day - Saint Epiphanius of Pavia Epiphanius was Bishop of the city of Pavia, in the northwestern part of Italy, in the mid Fifth Century. It was a very difficult time. Barbarians invaded Italy from the north and succeeded in conquering it, under the kings Odoacer and then Theodoric the Great. This resulted in extreme misery for the inhabitants, who had to pay heavy taxes and often starved to death. Epiphanius rebuilt Pavia after it had been destroyed by Odoacer. He also obtained the release of numerous captives from the invading armies and succeeded in having the worst laws and taxes that had been imposed by the invaders modified. He tried to put into practice the teaching that one quarter of the income of the Church should be devoted to the poor. The popes of the time were impressed by him and sent him as a representative to Odoacer and Theodoric. They also sent him on missions to the Emperors of the Roman Empire, who were residing in Constantinople at the time, in order to assert the rights of the Church in the face of attempts by the Emperors to meddle in the teachings of the Church. As Pope Felix wrote to the Emperor Zeno: The Emperor is a son of the Church, not a bishop. In matters of faith, he must learn, not teach. Epiphanius also went on missions to various other rulers in the hope of preventing wars. His final mission was to the French region of Burgundy, to seek the release of people who had been taken captive by barbarian invaders there. When he got back to Pavia he died of cold and fever. Epiphanius was known during his lifetime for his outstanding pastoral achievements in a time of extreme turmoil and calamity. He was called the peacemaker, the glory of Italy and the light of bishops. Saint Epiphanius of Pavia, pray for us! 3 Pastor s Page Fr. Michael Rudolph God s Thunder I love the Catholic Church, but I have to admit that sometimes when I read official statements from some official Catholic organizations, I want to take a nap. They can be so tame! And obvious! And self-evident. Reading that we should work for peace, try to alleviate poverty, seek justice, help the needy, be kind to refugees, not be racist, support families, pass on the faith, pray for vocations, be good stewards, and try to help abuse victims find healing does not exactly expand my horizons, challenge me or excite me. Who doesn t think all those things are good to do? A few people, maybe. But my bet is that folks who work for war, try to increase poverty, work for injustice, intentionally take from the needy, are mean to refugees, cultivate racism, try to undermine families, attempt to keep the faith from being passed on, try to reduce vocations, attempt to be terrible stewards, or try to hurt abuse victims, are in a very small minority not just of Catholics, but of human beings in general. In contrast, God, in his communication with us human beings, doesn t just say Be nice over and over again, in a multitude of ways. He is always jolting, challenging, eye-opening, and refreshing. His words have more of the urgency seen in that message that was sent by mistake to the people of Hawaii recently: Ballistic Missile Threat Inbound to Hawaii. Seek Immediate Shelter. This is not a Drill. If we take God s word to us seriously, he will never put us to sleep. And we will never be the same. Take the message God gave Jonah for the people of Nineveh: Forty days more and Nineveh will be destroyed. (Jonah 3:4) Like many of God s warnings, it was conditional. In other words, whether or not it would be carried out depended on people s response. The people of Nineveh responded with repentance for their sins, and were spared. If you or I threatened destruction even if we said it was a message from God and that God would be the one doing the destroying my guess is that some folks from the Department of Homeland Security would make sure we were taken into custody. Maybe that s one reason God remains invisible It makes it harder to arrest or detain him. God was direct and dramatic with the people of Nineveh, and they listened. Or take the message God gave Saint Paul for the Christians in Corinth: Time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them...for the world in its present form is passing away. (1 Corinthians 7:29) Say what? That s what I call a relational and social earthquake. It sounds like some real rearranging of our priorities is in order. And take the words of Jesus. They are like spiritual grenades, blowing up complacency and bland habits wherever he throws them. This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. (Mark 1:14-17). There is a reason why some people who heard Jesus said, No man ever spoke like this man. (John 7:46) He spoke like thunder, with the power of God. He also spoke with the love of God, always. So, let s never be afraid of Jesus or his words. If we listen to them attentively, they will change our lives. And that change will always be for the better. Yours in Jesus Christ, Father Rudolph MONDAY WEDNESDAY

We could use your voice at Mass. One of the many ministries in which we can serve God and His people is that of being a cantor. This is the person who sings solo at various times in the Liturgy, accompanied by whoever is playing the organ or piano. We could use more cantors at all of our Liturgies, but especially at the 5:30 pm Saturday Vigil Mass and the 8:30 am Sunday Mass. Right now, we have only one cantor for Saturdays, other than when the Schola sings. If you can sing on key, have a clear voice, can go up and down stairs and would be willing to help the parish out in this important way, please contact Father Rudolph. If we don t have more cantors very soon, we may find ourselves having some Masses with no music. With Sympathy The prayers and sympathy of the parish are offered to the family and friends of Shirley Mitchell and Helen Corrigan.
