3 The Church requires that all Catholics must receive Holy Communion during the Easter Season. Of course, we cannot receive Holy Communion if we are in the state of mortal sin, so we must go to confession before receiving Communion if there is a mortal sin on our soul. Over the years people have tried to find ways to get around the necessity of going to confession. I recall in the 1980 s and 1990 s when priests were offering General Absolu on services. The churches were o en packed with people who heard some readings and a homily, the priest prayed for them, and they went home. The only problem was that their sins were not forgiven. There is such a thing as general absolu on in the Church, but it is limited only to emergencies which entail serious danger of death. However, if a person lives through the emergency, they s ll have to go to confession. In other words, general absolu on is valid only if the person dies in the emergency. It is absolutely forbidden to plan them or promote them, because we cannot plan when there will be an emergency. By the way, too many people or not enough priests is not sufficient to call the situa on an emergency. The Bishops of America defined the emergency situa on, beyond serious danger of death, as being unable to get to confession within 30 days. No one in our area can make such a claim. There have been other abuses of the Sacrament over the past few decades. I recall some parishes, in an a empt to demonstrate the forgiveness of sin, would put a charcoal grill near the sanctuary, have the people write their sins on a piece of paper, then line up as if they were going to Communion, hand their paper to the priest (or lay person in some cases) who would then put the paper on the charcoals and burn it up. While this might be a nice demonstra on of the fact that one s sins are removed in confession, the problem is that no one actually confessed their sins. So, their piece of paper was destroyed, but their sins had not been forgiven because they had not been confessed. For a while, there were some places that told people to confess only one thing they felt badly about. Of course, what you feel badly about may not even be a sin. Even if it is, there may be more than one sin that needed to be confessed. Another a empt at being relevant was to offer family confessions. Regular confession hours were cancelled and a family could make an appointment to come to the rectory for confession, all of them together. Needless to say, this did not last long. Confession is not something to fear or to avoid. Many people like to say things like God knows I am sorry or I don t have to confess my sins to a man, I confess them to God. God is the One who established the Sacrament because as human persons we need it. Like all Sacraments, confession provides an objec vity so a person knows his or her sins are forgiven. If everything was based on our own subjec ve experience, we could only hope our sins are gone. When you confess you sins to a priest and receive absolu on, your sins are forgiven. By forgiven I do not mean glossed over or swept under the rug. By forgiven I mean they are gone, destroyed, obliterated, never to be heard of again. Even on the Day of Judgment we will not hear about the sins we have been forgiven in the confessional because we brought them to God already, so He does not have to bring them to us. The priest in the confessional is not there to judge you or to yell at you; He is there to forgive you. You do not have to be afraid. The devil tempts us to think we should not confess our sins. Perhaps he will use fear, perhaps shame, perhaps a emp ng us to deny the sin or to jus fy it. None of it works because deep down we know the sin is s ll there. It is usually our pride that keeps us from going to confession. A few things to remember: most priests have heard just about everything there is to hear, so your sins will not shock him. The most shameful sins tend to be viola ons of the sixth commandment, but these are the mortal sins we hear the most frequently, so you do not have to be ashamed or afraid. If we die with a mortal sin on our soul we cannot go to Heaven. So, we have a choice: a few seconds of humility to confess our sins or an eternity apart from God because we would not humble ourselves to make a good confession. There is nothing worth missing Heaven for, so don t let a sin, any sin, stand between you and eternal life. If there is a sin on your soul, the priest is in the confessional to remove it for you. He is there to reconcile you with God, not to cause you any trouble. So, if there is something standing between you and God, please come to confession and get rid of it forever. If it has been a long me since you heard those beau ful words of absolu on, please come to Jesus in the confessional and be reconciled with God. All of the Sacraments are beau ful, but confession is also very powerful. Jesus works miracles in this Sacrament. Give Him your sins and He will replace them with His grace and give you peace of mind.

4 Is our Lady calling you to par cipate in a newly forming prayer group at St. Raphael s? Please consider joining a World Apostolate of Fa ma prayer cell. Why: To par cipate in our Lady s Peace Plan from Heaven. Learn the Fa ma message and pray with others in response to Mary s request for prayer and penance. When: 3rd Thursday of every month, 9:30 11:00 am beginning April 19th. Where: Conference Room Contact: Shirlann Biser Sponsored by: St. Raphael s Rosary Society I promise salva on to those who embrace devo on to my Immaculate Heart, and these souls will be loved by God like flowers placed by me to adorn His throne. ~Our Lady of Fa ma, June 13, 1917 The contrast between the processional reading in today's liturgy and the proclama on of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupa on. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trus ng that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 7 Today we prepare to commemorate the death and resurrec on of Jesus. Isaiah reminds us of the suffering that Jesus will endure. He says Jesus will not be disgraced or put to shame, but we know that there will be humilia on at the hands of others. The psalm recalls the fear and sorrow as we repeat over and over Jesus' words of anguish and abandonment. Philippians describes Jesus' humility and the exalta on that will follow. But it is Mark who takes us through the last days of Jesus' life, the ordinary and the extraordinary. He describes the meal shared with the one who will betray him; his anguished prayers with friends who cannot stay awake and will later deny him; his treatment at the hands of priests, elders, soldiers; and finally his death and the recogni on that truly Jesus is the Son of God.
