3 In the messages of our Lady at Fatima between May and October of 1917, on seven occasions the Blessed Mother gave instructions to pray the Rosary. On October 13, 1917, after the final message was given to the three children, our Lady appeared in three different forms, the last of which was Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In this apparition she was holding the Brown Scapular in one hand and the Rosary in her other hand. She spoke of many things at Fatima, but I believe that in this vision she also gave us the remedy for some of the difficulties that are immanent. On five occasions in the messages Mary gave to the children she referred to herself as the Lady of the Rosary. Also, five different times she mentioned the necessity to pray the Rosary for an end to the war (recall that World War I was raging at the time). There were several occasions when Lucia asked about people being healed when our Lady told her that the persons would have to repent and also pray the Rosary. The instructions of our Lady must have been deeply impressed in the mind and heart of Lucia, because she would often tell people that anything can be obtained through the praying of the Rosary. When we consider the context of the Feast of our Lady of the Rosary (which will be celebrated on Saturday, October 7), it was instituted by Pope Pius V after Christian forces were miraculously victorious in a naval battle at Lepanto in With the Christian forces on the verge of defeat, the Pope asked the people to pray the Rosary; the victory in the battle was credited to the praying of the Rosary. At Fatima our Lady directly connected the praying of the Rosary to the end of the World War. In other words, while the realities of sickness, war, and other problems are often rooted in something spiritual. Even at Fatima, our Lady said that if people did not stop offending God, another war, worse than the one that was going on, would occur. She was talking about World War II. So, many problems in our lives and in the world are due to sin or other spiritual maladies. The Rosary is the antidote to these things. Given this context, we can say that the Rosary is the weapon Heaven has given us for fighting the spiritual battle which has affected every one of us. All of us sin and all of us live in a world that has given itself over to sin in so many ways. The Rosary is the means to combat the evils in and around us. I have often thought that the Rosary is the chain spoken of in Revelation 20 which binds the dragon. In the Rosary we have presented to us the mysteries of our Faith. From the Incarnation of Jesus, through the events of His life, Passion, and resurrection, to the glories of Heaven; it is a veritable catechism. The Rosary reminds us that Mary is our Mother and gives us hope and encouragement as we struggle through the difficulties of life. She was with her Son in every event of His life, and she will be with us through everything we will face in life. In the Rosary we can be united with Jesus and Mary in the good times of life as well as in the difficult and painful seasons of our lives. When we are suffering it is a consolation to know that Jesus and Mary experienced suffering like ours. Not only do they know what it is to suffer greatly, but they will be the most compassionate of friends who will not abandon us in the midst of our trials. Obviously, God knows everything, but there is something that is particularly helpful for us when we can connect with someone who has experienced this kind of suffering. To meditate on the various mysteries not only brings us into a deeper understanding of our Faith, it also brings us into a more intimate union with Jesus and Mary. At the same time, it allows us to be united with those members of the Mystical Body whose present situation may be just the opposite of our own. Scripture says that we are to rejoice with those who rejoice and to mourn with those who mourn. If we are suffering, we can pray the joyful or glorious mysteries and we can think about those who are in pleasant circumstances at the time. Rather than being envious or jealous of their present good fortune, we can rejoice with them, even in the midst of our suffering. Praying these mysteries can also give us hope, knowing that our circumstances are only temporary and the day will come again when we can be joyful or rejoice in our glory. In those times when we are doing well, praying the sorrowful mysteries allows us to pray for those who are suffering. We can be united with them in their suffering. Since we have all been there, we can be truly compassionate toward those who are having trouble. It is also a reminder that while we are on top of the mountain at the moment, the time will return when we will find ourselves in the valley once again. The prayers of the Rosary are always the same because we can be praying the words thereby keeping our minds occupied without having to concentrate too hard. This leaves us able to concentrate on the mysteries and carry on a conversation with the Lord or our Lady in our heart while our mind is filled with the words of the prayers. The word Rosary means a crown of roses. When we pray the Rosary well, it is like giving our Lady a beautiful bouquet of roses. Since Heaven will never be outdone in generosity, our Lady will be obtaining for us the graces necessary to help us in our present circumstances and to grow in virtue in the likeness of her Son. In Isaiah and Micah we are told that in times of peace the people would beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. However, Joel tells us that in time of war the people would beat their plowshares into swords. Our Lady has given us the instrument of battle for our spiritual warfare. But this weapon is also the instrument of peace, both interior and exterior. Look around and note that the battle is on! It is time to do what our Lady asked and pray the Rosary for so that the victory will be ours and that the war will be ended and peace be restored. Remember what she said at Fatima: In the end my Immaculate Heart will Triumph. Be part of our Lady s triumph by praying the Rosary daily. ~~ Fr. Altier

4 Saint of the Day Saint Galla Galla was born near the end of the fifth century. Her father, Quintus Aurelius Symmachus, was a wealthy Roman who was among those killed by Theodoric, the leader of the Goth tribe, who had attacked and conquered Rome. She married but her husband died just a year after their wedding. Her family urged her to remarry, but instead she devoted herself to God and the relief of the poor. She lived in a community of consecrated women near St. Peter s Basilica in simplicity of heart, dedicated to prayer and giving many alms to the poor, as an early biographer put it. After many years she came down with breast cancer. Saint Pater appeared to her in a vision, assured her that her sins were forgiven, and told her that she would die very soon. Galla did in fact die three days later. Galla was also told that her friend Benedicta would die in thirty days. That also happened. Saint Galla, pray for us! (Excerpted and adapted with permission of the Publisher from Butler s Lives of the Saints, New Full Edition Paul Burns 2003, Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN) Prayers for the Sick Please pray for the following individuals: Andrew Eisenzimmer, Elaine Wosmek, Jeanette Jesser, and David McMillen. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month. The general lack of respect for human life and dignity that results in abortion, bullying, racism, neglect, injustice, terrorism, and war results in assaults by spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends. Sometimes these result in death or serious physical injury. Even if the abuse is only verbal, it can result in emotional and psychological wounds that not only hurt, but also have negative effects on self-esteem, relationships, work, parenting, and coping behaviors that can last a lifetime. May God help the victims and perpetrators to get the help and healing they need, and may He help us Christians to reach out and do our part. The Blessed Virgin Mary accompanies us all in this month of October with her love, prayers, and example. May we too be missionary disciples in all the everyday experiences and realities of life.
