2 The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Twenty-two: The Na vity of Our Lord, con nued When the angel appeared to the shepherds to tell them about the birth of Jesus, the glory of the Lord shown around them. (Luke 2:9) What is this glory of the Lord? In the original Greek of Luke s Gospel, the word for glory is doxa. This brings into the New Testament the Jewish concept of kabod, which means something weighty which gives importance. With regard to human beings, this could be wealth or honor. When used with regard to God, kabod means that which makes God impressive. This means first of all who God is in Himself. For example, God is love. (1 John 4:8) Secondarily, it means God s impressive self-manifesta on, either through natural phenomena or supernaturally. There are His ac ons in history, for example when Jewish armed forces throughout history have defeated vastly larger a acking armies. There are also God s ac ons in nature, for example the majesty, power and beauty of a thunderstorm makes sensible something of the invisible awesomeness of God. God s kabod or doxa has also been manifested in supernatural ways. For example, when the Jewish people were journeying from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land, God s kabod was manifested as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night that first hid them from Pharaoh s army un l the sea was parted and then led them through the wilderness (Exodus 13-14). This cloud also came down Mount Sanai when Moses went up to fast and receive the Ten Commandments (Exodus 24:15-18). It subsequently covered the tent of mee ng when it was completed: Moses was not able to enter the tent of mee ng, because the cloud abode upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. (Exodus 40:34-35) God s kabod kept coming to the tent every me Moses went there to meet Him: Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose up, and every man stood at his tent door, and looked a er Moses, un l he had gone into the tent. When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the door of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses. And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, every man at his tent door. Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. (Exodus 33:8-11) Centuries later, when King Solomon dedicated the Temple in Jerusalem, God s kabod was manifested as fire coming down from heaven and also a Presence that filled the Temple so that the gathered priests could not enter it. (2 Chronicles 7:1-3) The Prophet Ezekiel had a vision of the glory of the Lord, which he described as a great cloud, with brightness round about it, and fire flashing forth con nually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming bronze. (Ezekiel 1:4) God s doxa was manifested again at the Transfigura on of Jesus: A bright cloud overshadowed them as Jesus was speaking with Moses and Elijah and Jesus was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. (Ma hew 17:1-8) Christ with this doxa his glory, the glory of God appeared a er his Resurrec on to Saint John, exiled on the island of Patmos. He saw Jesus clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash across his chest; his head and his hair were white as white wool, white as snow; his eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in fire as in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many waters; in his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth issued a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. (Revela on 1:12-16) God is so majes c that words are inadequate to describe Him. Kabod, doxa and glory are shorthand for reali es that are far beyond human language. It s fi ng that the angel announcing to the shepherds the birth of God on earth should bring with him some of heaven s glory. May we too see that glory with the eyes of faith in this life, and with the eyes of our body someday in heaven. Your fellow seeker for God s glory, Father Rudolph Pastoral Council: Dale Hoffmann, Sharon Hedman, Mike Vecellio, Roselyn Lawrence, Betty Kreuter, Rose Pistilli, Scott Gregory and Mario Chavez. Pastoral Council Meetings: If you would like a par cular item on the next Parish Council agenda please contact Fr. Rudolph. FAITH FORMATION & ROC SCHEDULE CHANGE! 5 Saints of the Day - Saint Elzéar and Blessed Delphine Elzéar and Delphine were born in France around the year Their wealthy parents arranged for them to marry each other when they were young, and they entered into the sacrament of matrimony when they were both about sixteen. Delphine asked if they could live as brother and sister. A er some hesita on, Elzéar agreed. They were said to have enjoyed a very harmonious and mutually suppor ve marriage. In about 1317 they moved to Naples, with Delphine working for Sanchia, the wife of King Robert, and Elzéar serving a tutor to their son Charles. In 1323 the king sent Elzéar to Paris to ask the French king, Philip V, to give his daughter, Mary of Valois, as wife to Charles. When he had fulfilled this mission and returned to Naples, Elzéar got sick and died within a few days. Delphina survived her husband by thirty-seven years, returning to France a er Queen Sanchia died. There she gave all that she could away to the poor and lived as a recluse, first at Cabrières and then at Apt. During her final years she suffered from a painful illness with great pa ence. When she died on November 26, 1360, she was buried with her husband. Saint Elzéar and Blessed Delphine, pray for us! First Saturday Devo ons All are invited to a end the First Saturday Devo on to Our Lady of Fa ma, a er 8:00 am Mass, on the first Saturday of each month, in the Holy Spirit Chapel. The next first Saturday is December 1st. Our Lady of Fa ma promised Sister Lucia that she would assist at the hour of death, with graces necessary for salva on all those who on the first Saturdays of five consecu ve months; confess, receive Holy Communion, pray a Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour medita ng on the fi een mysteries with the inten on of offering me repara on. Hymn Board/Pew Missal Guide The wooden song boards now display the Sunday of the year (e.g. 32 nd OT means 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time) and a page number. The page number on the board indicates the page number in the Pew Missal where the readings may be found. (Page numbers in the Pew Missal are found at the bo om of the page.) We hope displaying this informa on will help parishioners, new and old, to more easily find the Readings and An phons for the day. The electronic (red number) hymn boards will be used to display hymn numbers. Hymns are found in the rear of the Pew Missal and have large black numbers by the tle of the hymn which is in red. We are doing this because it can be confusing to list both page numbers and hymn numbers on the same boards. Because of limited space on the wooden song board we abbreviate Ordinary Time by the capital le ers, O T. Most Sundays of the year are Ordinary Time. During Advent, Lent, and the Easter Season, you will probably see something like Advent 1 or Lent 4 with a page number. To summarize, look to the wooden hymn boards for the page numbers of the Readings and An phons in the Pew Missal. Use the red numbers to find the hymns in the rear of the Pew Missal.
