3 This past Tuesday, August 2, was the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels. Most people who have heard of this title of our Blessed Lady know it from one of two Franciscan places. The irst is the little church St. Francis rebuilt when he misunderstood what the Lord had asked of him when God told St. Francis that he was to rebuild the Church. The Saint thought it meant rebuilding the dilapidated church that was in the area where St. Francis family lived. St. Francis picked up stones from the area and rebuilt the little church which today is enshrined inside of a much larger church building. The other place with which people can associate this name is the monastery Mother Angelica built in Alabama. When the Nuns needed to build a new monastery due to lack of space in their old convent, Mother determined to bless it with the title of Our Lady of the Angels. In this way she dedicated the monastery to our Blessed Lady, she sought the protection and intercession of the Holy Angels, and she remained irmly rooted in Franciscan history. While this is all well and good, the title of Our Lady of the Angels does not come from the church or the monastery; rather, these two places, and many others which bear the name, come from the practical reality that our Lady is the Queen of the Angels. During this month of August we have the great privilege of celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven (August 15 (and a Holy Day of Obligation)) and also the Feast of the Queenship of Mary (August 22). As a total side point, traditionally the Feast of the Queenship of Mary was celebrated on May 31, which is why the May crowning took place when it did. We have maintained the tradition of the May crowning, but no longer have the connection with the liturgical celebration of our Lady s coronation during May. Instead, we now celebrate that glorious Feast on the Octave day of the Assumption. So, on August 15 we celebrate the truth that our Lady was taken body and soul into Heaven. This is a great privilege for our Blessed Mother, but it is also a great consolation and assurance to us because we can see that in one who is merely and purely human, God s promises have been ful- illed. Knowing that these promises are ful illed in a human person, we can move forward with the greatest con idence knowing that those promises will be ful illed in us as well. In essence, this means that our Lady shares already in the resurrection and in the glori ication of Heaven. While the souls of the Saints are in Heaven, they, like us, will have to wait until the last day of the world before their bodies rise from the dead and are reunited with their souls. Then, in the fullness of their persons, they will be able to share in eternal glory. This is the gift our Lord has already bestowed upon His Mother. As wonderful as it is that our Lady already shares in the glory of her Son, the Feast of the Queenship of Mary reminds us that she has been given a place in Heaven that is higher than all of the Angels and Saints. Remember that in Heaven there will be a hierarchy based solely on how much a person loves God. This means that you can be elevated higher than the Angels, or at least some of them, if you love God more than they do. St. Louis de Montfort tells us that Mary loves God more than all of the Angels and Saints combined. Even with this, God s love is still in initely greater than Mary s. Nonetheless, because she loves God more than everyone else, she occupies the highest place in Heaven, yet in initely below God. Because of her position, she is the Queen not only of the Saints, but of the Angels as well. By God s choice, every grace He gives to the world comes through Mary. This includes any and all graces He gives to the Angels. Therefore, the Angels wait for our Lady to give them her command (which she receives from God) and the Angels are perfectly obedient in carrying out her directives. While all of this might sound pretty wonderful, it does have some very practical applications for us. First of all, Mary is our Spiritual Mother because we are all baptized into her Son. Therefore, for the same reason we can call God our Father, we can also call Mary our Mother. This means that our Mother is in Heaven in the fullness of her person interceding for us. No one loves like mother, and when your Mother loves God and loves you more than anyone else in the universe, her intercession for you is powerful. It also means that your mother is the Queen. In an earthly realm, the subjects would probably never have an audience with the Queen and, if they did, it would be a very formal affair. However, the children of the Queen have access to their mother anytime. She is still their Queen as well, but because she is their mother, they do not need an appointment nor do they have to observe all the formalities of the Court. Your Mother, who is the Queen of Heaven, loves you. Like any mother, she loves to hear from her children, but she likes it even more when they are with her. Mary wants to hear from you, but she also wants you to spend time with her. Go to prayer and be with our Lady. She will teach you how to love God most perfectly. She is also the Queen of the Angels, so you can ask her, under this title, to send some of the Holy Angels to help you. This is especially helpful when you are feeling bothered by the unholy angels. So, in this month of August, we have much to be grateful for and much to celebrate. But we are not alone. God is irst to celebrate the love of His Mother and Jesus was the irst to be completely dependent on and devoted to His Mother. The Angels also join us in this celebration. They see it as a blessing that Mary is their Queen and they rejoice in the mystery of God s plan and providence that they can serve Him through her. Satan and the fallen angels could not accept that God would make Himself lower than the angels, nor could they accept that a human woman would be elevated above all of the angels. They lost their place in Heaven because they rejected God s plan. Your Guardian Angel, and all of the Holy Angels, accepted God s plan and they rejoice that we have the privilege to join with them in worshipping God and praising our Holy Mother for her goodness and her love. 4 Saint of the Day Blessed Mary Margaret Caiani Mary Margaret was born Maria Anna Rosa Caini in Poggio a Caiano, near the city of Florence in Italy on November 2, From an early age she wanted to become a nun but it took her years to decide which Order best it her ideals of combining prayer with commitment to helping people in need, especially children, the sick and the elderly. She eventually decided that the best way forward was to found an Order herself. In 1894, with help from her family, she and two friends opened a school for neglected and abandoned children. Then on December 15, 1902, she established her community with ive members, living religious life in a house that was also a chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The name of the Order was the Institute of Franciscan Minims (from the Latin word minimus, meaning least or smallest ) of the Sacred Heart. She took the name in religion of Mary Margaret in memory of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. The Order grew and spread to a number of Italian cities. In 1915, at the irst general chapter of the Order, Mary Margaret was elected superior. She founded twelve houses of the Order herself, and as of 1998 they had about 500 members in 59 houses. When Saint John Paul II beati ied her on April 23, 1989, he referred to her humble dedication to the poor and unfortunate and to unwanted children and wounded soldiers, and to her ability to inspire the same commitment in other members of her Order. 5 Greetings, St Raphael families! It is with joy that we want to express our appreciation for the generous hospitality that you have shown us as new tenants at the faithful St. Raphael s parish. St. Raphael s has been the home for Cana Family Institute s National Headquarters since November last year. Being here has enabled us to serve well our mission to help parishes help families in this archdiocese and 9 other dioceses Cincinnati, Covington, Houston, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Austin,TX, Wichita and Dallas. August and September are busy months as we are helping new teams to get started and training the trainers who accompany the parish s family life team facilitators. We have six trainers that are supporting teams in approximately local parishes including a Mothers of Young Children s team here at St. Raphael s. 'If we were - beginning with the Church - to centre our attention on the family that listens and practices the Word of GOD, we would become like the good wine of the wedding feast of Cana, we would ferment like the leaven of God!' 6 GREEN BAY MISSION TRIP & STEUBENVILLE ON THE LAKE Behold, I make all things new. Revelation 21:5 This was the theme for the Mission Trip & Steubenville Conference this year. It was a beautiful week of prayer, sacraments, fellowship, and, of course, service. We had a group of 60 adults and high school students from both St. Raphael & St. Bonaventure in Bloomington. It was also a huge blessing to have our pastor, Fr. Rudolph, with us on the trip. Thank you for allowing us to steal him from the parish for a whole week! I had such a wonderful time on the Mission Trip and I m sure if you ask our high school students, they would say the same thing. One thing that I especially love about the Mission Trip is beginning each day with Mass and ending each day with a time of Eucharistic adoration. These are both times in which we are able to encounter Jesus Christ and grow closer to Him. We are able to come to Jesus and allow Him to make us new to make us more like Himself. Ultimately, this is what we are all called to. We are all called to become like Christ. And I know irsthand that this is what our high school students are striving for. I would like to thank you all for your support of our youth ministry. Thank you so much for your inancial support and for your prayers. Both are necessary and extremely important.
