The Chancel banner expresses the Christian belief that in one God there are three divine persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The color green represents spiritual growth during this season of the church year. Large print resources are available at the information desk. Our facility is equipped with the Loop hearing system. For Children: Ages 0-2: Infant and toddler nurseries are available. Preschool: The Little Children (TLC) gathers downstairs prior to the morning worship. K-2 nd : After the Children s Message the Children s Worship ministry meets downstairs until the conclusion of worship. Parents meet their children there following the service. Children s Bulletins are in the holder in the narthex. Fellowship and Information: Everyone is invited to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the morning service. An introductory church DVD is available at the Information Desk. All of our ministries are described in the colorful folders at the Information Desk near the nurseries. 4 Calvin CRC Announcements for February 15, 2015 WORSHIP Today, 10 AM and 5 PM Morning worship: Rev. Bob Koornneef is preaching from Luke 15:11-32 the message Incredible Love, and the Allegro Ringers are leading us in ministry of music. Our offering is for Ministry Fund. Evening worship: Our Sanctuary Choir joins with Woodlawn CRC s choir for Who is My Neighbor A Hymn Festival featuring the art of Steve Prince at 5:00 PM in the Calvin College Chapel. This was originally scheduled for February 1 but cancelled due to poor weather. We are blessed to still be able to worship together under the leadership of these choirs. Ash Wednesday, February 18 Morning: For those who desire to begin Ash Wednesday with the traditional morning service, there will be a service with the imposition of ashes offered at First CRC, 670 Franklin SE at 7:00 AM. Evening: Calvin Church will host a 7:00 PM worship service with our Covenant and Cherub choirs, Rev. Rebecca Jordan Heys offering a meditation, and the imposition of ashes to all who desire. WORSHIP Next Sunday, February 22 Morning worship: Our Sanctuary Choir will lead us in ministry of music. We welcome Rev. Lester Van Essen, who will preach from 2 Corinthians 2:1-13, "God's Sufficient Grace." Rev. Van Essen served as a missionary in Nigeria and a pastor in Illinois. Our offering will be for Inner City Christian Federation. Evening worship: Rev. Van Essen will preach from Joshua 6:12-21 and 1 John 5:1-5, "Faith is the Victory." Our offering will be for Family Promise. COUNCIL NEWS The Deacons gratefully acknowledge January gifts allocated as follows: Ministry Fund 48, Missions 5, Baxter Community Center Family Assistance F.I.S.H Home Repair Services Refugee Resettlement Committee Sabbatical Contributions Building Fund - Designated FA bldg 10, Benevolence STAFF NOTES: Doug and Cathy MacLeod, putting the sabbatical time on hold for the time being, are traveling to Thailand for two weeks of vacation to visit their new granddaughter and her parents.

5 CHURCH FAMILY Marilyn Brumels (District #10) had unexpected surgery February 9 to repair a heart valve. She has made good progress and hoped to be home by the weekend. Vonnie Poortenga (District #10) was admitted to the hospital on February 8. She has been going through numerous tests all week in an effort to find the cause of her difficulties. Gord Bordewyk Sr. (District #6) was able to return to his home February 10. Jack VanZytveld (District #12) is scheduled to have a surgical procedure on Wednesday, February 18 for an abdominal aortic aneurism. Bob Daining (District #8) is now a resident at The Woods at Maple Creek ( nd St SE, Kentwood, MI 49508). Ruth Rice (District #13) received good news about a recent MRI and positive news about other tests. John Joling (District #12) is scheduled to have some repair surgery on his knee next Friday, February 20. CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK: 2/15 Abby Gronsman (15!) 2/19 Aubrey and Lydia Visker (5!) We get to jump for an hour at Sky Zone, and then we will travel to Culver s for a treat. Parents can drop you off at Sky Zone at 6:15 PM. They may pick you up at Culver s at 8:30 PM. Cost is $10 for the evening. Note the change of date from original schedule. CYG MEETING: Please join us next Sunday night, February 22, for CYG from 6:30 to 9 PM. Thanks to the Ezingas, Swets, and Koemans for providing supper. Katie VerHulst and Claire Brouwer have volunteered to share devotions, and Sam Poortenga will bring a birthday snack. CYG VOLUNTEERS: Our annual Soup Supper fundraiser is Wednesday night, February 25. Youth volunteers are needed at 3:30 PM for set up, so please contact Char if you can start at that time. We will finish with cleanup about 7:30 or 8 PM. Thanks for volunteering. It will be a great night!

6 MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS Today ADULT EDUCATION: As a dearly loved and long-term fellow member of Calvin Church, Thea VanHalsema will invite us to reflect with her on the dependable leading and love of our Lord in the context of relentless change. She will reflect on the impact of technological, cultural, political and religious changes on the sustainable peace that provides us a rock in the rapids. We will learn from her involvement in the life of Christ s church worldwide how Christ, the Rock, provides firm faith in troubled times. Next Sunday ADULT EDUCATION: How do the accounts of creation in the Old Testament compare to creation stories from surrounding cultures in the ancient Near East? Ancient creation stories are meant to address ultimate questions about the divine, humanity, and the presence of evil in the world. Rev. Sarah Schreiber will compare the biblical text to stories from other cultures, so we can appreciate the good news of creation in a fresh way. PANCAKE BRUNCH TODAY: All are welcome to join us for a Pancake Brunch fundraiser today immediately following the morning worship service. Gluten-free pancakes will be available. The proceeds will benefit the high school youth attending SERVE this summer. WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY: Join us on Wednesday, February 18 at 9:30 AM as we study Revelation 16 led by Pastor Rebecca. Study sheets are on the table in the narthex. COURIER ARTICLES: Articles for the March Courier are due to Clare Walhout (clarewalhout@gmail.com) by Friday, February 20. LENTEN BREAKFAST: Mark your calendar for the annual Lenten Breakfast on Wednesday, April 1. SEEKING SOUP MAKERS!: We are seeking persons willing to contribute soup to the Soup Supper Fundraiser which will be held on February 25. Please contact Char if you are interested. Thank you! SAVE THE DATE: Our annual youth group Soup Supper fundraiser is coming on Wednesday evening, February 25. It will be combined with our annual Cadet and GEMS Pinewood Derby races. Please plan to join us for a wonderful night of fun, fellowship and delicious soups! BUTTER BRAID FUNDRAISER: Delicious and easy-to-prepare Butter Braids can be ordered through next Monday, February 23. Braids will be available to pick up on March 8. The frozen braids sell for $13 each, and serve 6 to 8 persons. The youth group earns $5.50 for each Butter Braid sold. They can be ordered by turning the order form slip into Char or the office, or by ordering from the signup sheet in the Atrium.
