2 Lord, it is good for us to be here. Matthew 17:4 Christ the King Sunday Ten o clock November 23, 2014 Prelude: Three Trumpet Pieces Gilbert Martin Welcome and Announcements Call to Worship: Come to worship Jesus Christ, Alpha and Omega, the one who is, who was, and is to come (Rev. 1:8). We come to worship the one who rules justly. (2 Samuel 23:3). Come to worship Jesus Christ, the faithful witness The firstborn of the dead, The ruler of the kings of the earth! (Rev. 1:5) Eternal Word, Great I AM. (John 1, John 8:58) Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace! (Isaiah 9:6) We come to worship Jesus Christ, King of kings, and Lord of lords! (Rev ) To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen. (Rev. 1:6) Musical Call to Worship: Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty Joachim Neander Open now thy gate of beauty; Zion, let me enter there, Where my soul in joyful duty waits on him who answers prayer; O how blessed is this place, filled with solace, light, and grace. Speak, O God, and I will hear thee; let thy will be done indeed; May I undisturbed draw near thee, while thou dost thy people feed. Here of life the fountain flows; here is balm for all our woes. * Opening Hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty #538:1-4 * God s Greeting Revelation 1:4-5 CHRIST IS KING Declaration of Allegiance: We declare with those who insist, even in perilous times, that not even the most powerful rulers of this earth hold our eternal destiny in their hands. We are secure in Christ, whose reign is just, whose power is endless, and whose love is unfathomable. We join the historic and future testimony of saints declaring that Christ is our King.

3 Prayer: May your kingdom come. Let your word and Spirit rule us so that we increasingly yield ourselves to you. Keep your church strong, and make it grow. Destroy the works of the devil and every power or scheme opposed to your majesty and your word. Do this till your kingdom is complete when you will be all in all. Amen (Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 123, translated by R. Wevers) Hymn of Dedication: Lead On, O King Eternal #328:1-3 * Affirmation of Faith: Our Faith page 176 With the whole creation we join the song: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise! He has made us a kingdom of priests to serve our God, and we will reign on earth. God will be all in all, righteousness and peace will flourish, everything will be made new, and every eye will see at last that our world belongs to God. Hallelujah! Come, Lord Jesus! PRAISE AND PRAYER * Song of Response: Shout, for the Blessed Jesus Reigns #261:1,5 (Kindergarten 4 th grade children may come forward during the singing of this song.) Message for Children Anthem: God Has Gone Up with a Shout Hal Hopson God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of the trumpet. Sing praises to God, O sing to our King! Sing praises, for God is the king, God is the king of all the earth. A hymn of glory let us sing; new hymns throughout the world shall ring: A way that none has ever trod Christ takes his place, the throne of God. O risen Christ, ascended Lord, all praise to you let earth accord. You are, while endless ages run, with Father and with Spirit One. God is gone up. Alleluia! Alleluia! 7 STAFF NOTE Pastor Bob is leaving for vacation Monday, November 24. He will return on Monday, December 1. CHURCH FAMILY A significant number of our homebound members are dealing with health issues which is normal. We trust you save the list of homebound for remembering them in prayer. Our policy is to report about them when there are major concerns or changes in their status. On November 30, an updated list will be made available in connection with the opportunity to gather season greeting cards. If family members have specific concerns that they want mentioned on the prayer line or in the bulletin, they should feel free to contact the church office or any of the pastoral staff. We extend our sympathy to Ellie Zwier (District #11) as she mourns the death of her brother Willis DeBoer. I would like to thank all those who sent me cards when my friend, Neil Vogel, passed away. We know he is with our Lord and Savior. With love, Ann Boermans The Van Antwerpen family thanks the Calvin congregation for all the loving kindness shown to our mom, Berdela Van Antwerpen, since she lived out her last years as a member of your church family. Surely, you shared God s grace with her. Also, thank you for the cards and visits to our family as we celebrated her entry into heavenly glory. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far, (Philippians 1:23) is our comfort. May God continue to bless all your ministries! Thank you so much to the loving and caring members of Calvin Church for reaching out to us at the time of the death of our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. This affects women especially since they are often the sole wage earners of the family, and 70% of women live in extreme poverty. Next Sunday ADULT EDUCATION: Michael A. Baker will openly share his testimony of failures while using substances, and the success the Lord has given him while walking in faith with God. He will share accounts of the massive damage which substance abuse inflicts on people, based on first hand involvement at the Jellema Treatment Center and at Dégagé with persons who are seeking the Lord s help.

Talk to Ken Bos if you have questions, or just show up on December 4. BUTTER BRAID ORDERS: The frozen Butter Braid pastry orders are available for pick up today in the Atrium. Thanks to the congregation for helping the youth to raise $550 toward the summer service trip! ENJOY THE CITY COUPON BOOKS: Enjoy some savings at several area establishments by purchasing a $20 coupon book. Ten dollars from each book sold will benefit the high school youth on their service trip this summer. CALVIN COLLEGE SUNDAY DRIVERS NEEDED: Would you like to further our outreach to Calvin College students by picking some up for our Sunday morning worship service? Several members have been doing this and report positive experiences. Our goal is to form a pool of ten or more drivers so that two cars can be present each week at 9:40. With this size pool each individual driver would be scheduled approximately once per month during the school year. If you can assist with this work please contact the church office. Thanks in advance for volunteering! SEVERE WEATHER POLICY: In case of severe weather and a need to cancel church activities during the week, the cancellation notice will be posted on News 8, WOOD-TV, WOTV 4 and WXSP-TV by 3:00 PM. In addition, the church office will contact the choir directors or group leaders and notify them of the cancellation. If severe weather requires the cancellation of any worship service, notice will be posted at least one hour before the start of the scheduled service. FREEZER MINISTRY: Calvin's ill and home-bound members always express appreciation for soup and stew. We are low on these items, and ask for your help to build up our supply. Please place your donation in the freezer in the Fellowship Hall kitchen. Thank You! FRIENDS OF GEMS: Please take a moment to add to our Blessing Tree. Calvin Church s GEMS have started a Blessing Tree on the bulletin board across from the kitchen. Help our tree grow by adding your own blessing to it!

10 FISH: After many years of service, Les Ippel is stepping down as Calvin Church's coordinator of drivers for FISH. Ken Lobbes has graciously agreed to take his place as primary coordinator, but Les will stay as a back-up coordinator. When Les completely retires from FISH, greater attention will be given to honor his years of service. More drivers for FISH are needed!! Please consider being a driver, and give Ken a call: NOTE CARD SALE: Consider purchasing note cards for Christmas gifts this year. Proceeds (approximately 85%) from purchases will benefit our high school youth on their summer trip to SERVE in Crown Point, IN. The sales method will be different this year. Please complete an order form for the cards you wish to purchase. Posters with pictures of the note cards will be available to help you in your selection. Filled orders of note cards with envelopes should be available two weeks after received, and will be placed in your box. Card costs: 1 to 7 cards are $2 each; 8 for $14; 12 for $20. REQUESTED ANNOUNCEMENTS Volunteer Opportunity: Did you know that tax credits reduce poverty, promote work, and improve the school performance of children? Can you help lower-income families receive important tax credits? We'll provide free training, materials, support, equipment, and everything else needed for you to be an IRS-certified volunteer tax preparer. Training is offered in December or January. A team of 15 volunteers will prepare tax returns on Thursday afternoons or evenings.
