The Chancel banner expresses the Christian belief that in one God there are three divine persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The color green represents the growing and liturgical season. Large print resources are available at the information desk. Our facility is equipped with the Loop hearing system. For Children: Ages 0-2: Infant and toddler nurseries are available. Preschool: The Little Children (TLC) gathers downstairs prior to the morning worship. K-2 nd : After the Children s Message the Children s Worship ministry meets downstairs until the conclusion of worship. Parents meet their children there following the service. Children s Bulletins are in the holder in the narthex. Fellowship and Information: Everyone is invited to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the morning service. An introductory church DVD is available at the Information Desk. All of our ministries are described in the colorful folders on the table near the nurseries. 6 Calvin CRC Announcements for January 26, 2013 WORSHIP Today, 10 AM and 5 PM Morning Worship: The sermon series from the book of Exodus continues with Rev. MacLeod preaching from Exodus 7:8-13, "A Big Gulp." Our offerings are for Inner City Christian Federation. Evening Worship: Rev. MacLeod is preaching from Genesis 6:9-22, the story of God's instruction to Noah to build an ark. Our offerings are for Dégagé. WORSHIP NEXT SUNDAY, February 2 Morning Worship: We will share in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper, and Rev. MacLeod will be preaching from Exodus 7:14-24, "River of Blood." Our offerings will be for Gideons International. Evening Worship: Hymnwriter Ruth Duck will be leading a hymn festival called: The Poetry of Grace: Spirituality and Song at Woodlawn CRC, 3190 Burton St SE at 5:00 PM. COUNCIL NEWS At its meeting this week, Council heard a positive year-end budget report from our Treasurer Lisa TerBeek, discussed the proposed refurbishment of our sanctuary, and considered a much needed facility to house our vibrant Family Assistance ministry. Council approved an ad hoc committee to be chaired by Bob Schoone-Jongen that will address pastoral compensation and benefit issues, and heard a report from our New Member Enfolding Committee recommending that name tags be made available for all members of the congregation FINANCIAL REPORT: With gratitude to God, the deacons would like to thank the congregation for gifts and offerings of $1,021,070 that were received in This included $844,340 to the Ministry Fund, $90,437 to the Missions Fund, and over $60,000 for Community Care organizations and other causes. Each of the community care goals was met or exceeded. While the Ministry Fund giving total was less than budgeted, expenses were similarly below budget, and the net result was in line with the 2013 budget. 7 Today ADULT EDUCATION: Today's children have been insulated and protected from discomfort and adventure like no other generation of children ever before. Phil Warners (who serves as the Director of Outdoor Education at Camp Roger in Rockford, MI) believes that a "Nature Deficit Disorder" exists in many of today's children. Let's gain a Christian perspective on this issue. Why is this important to notice? What should be done about it? Come for this fascinating and instructive presentation. Next week ADULT EDUCATION: Mary Ann Walters presents a book review of "And the Mountains Echoed," which is the third novel by Afghan- American writer Khaled Hosseini, published in May of More complex and ambitious than his earlier novels, "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns," "Mountains" tells its story from the point of view of multiple narrators, it spans several generations, and it moves back and forth from Afghanistan to the Afghan diaspora in Paris and California. But Hosseini's themes remain the same: family relationships, the hard choices imposed by poverty and displacement, love, guilt, loss, and, sometimes, redemption. MacLeod will be leading a discussion on the short New Testament letter to Philemon on February 5 and 12. PANCAKE FUNDRAISER BRUNCH: The congregation is invited to attend a pancake brunch on Sunday, February 16, following the morning service. Donations given will go to the youth and leaders attending the Project Redlands service trip in June. BLOOD DRIVE/SOUP SUPPER/PINEWOOD DERBY: Save the date for our annual youth group Soup Supper fundraiser on February 26. It will be combined with the blood drive, as well as our Cadet/GEMS Pinewood Derby races! It is sure to be a wonderful night for all. REQUESTED ANNOUNCEMENTS Classis Grand Rapids East provides need-based financial aid to students who are members of Classis East churches, enrolled full-time in an approved M. Div. program, and committed to entering ordained ministry in the CRC.
