1 Growing in Discipleship Transformed for Ministry March 1, 2015 Sunday Worship 10:00 AM & 5:00 PM Sunday Church School Classes 11:30 AM-12:15 PM In Worship: Our worship proceeds unannounced and follows the printed liturgy. The black dominating our Lenten banner symbolizes the death of our Lord. The red expresses Christ s suffering; the branch is a symbol of His crown of thorns. These symbols are not meant to be concerned only with death and suffering; the thorny branch is white and flowering to indicate that from suffering triumph will come, and the red orb symbolizes Christ s victory. Just as the sun illumines, quickens and comforts, so Christ as the Son of Righteousness gives new life to His own. Large print resources are available at the information desk. Our facility is equipped with the Loop hearing system. For Children: Ages 0-2: Infant and toddler nurseries are available. Preschool: The Little Children (TLC) gathers downstairs prior to the morning worship. K-2 nd : After the Children s Message the Children s Worship ministry meets downstairs until the conclusion of worship. Parents meet their children there following the service. Children s Bulletins are in the holder in the narthex. Fellowship and Information: Everyone is invited to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the morning service. An introductory church DVD is available at the Information Desk. All of our ministries are described in the colorful folders at the Information Desk near the nurseries. Church office hours: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday Thursday Bulletin deadline: Wednesday Noon Office@CalvinCRC.org

2 If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. Mark 8:34 Second Sunday in Lent This morning we celebrate the Lord s Supper; a gracious gift that God provides to Christ s body, the church. All who have been baptized into Christ, and who desire to honor him with grateful and obedient living, are invited to participate in this sacrament discerning that this bread and cup are signs and seals of God s love for us and that we who participate are members of Christ s body. We serve gluten-free bread and non-alcoholic grape juice. Ten o clock March 1, 2015 Prelude: Triptych on Wondrous Love [#164] Nicholas Palmer Welcome and Announcements Call to Worship: Jesus, Lover of My Soul Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high; Hide me, O my Savior hide, till the storm of life is past; Safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last. Joseph Parry * Opening Hymn: Come, Worship God #509:1,3,4 * God s Greeting Call to Confession CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE Prayer of Confession O God, you have shown us the way of life through your Son, Jesus Christ. We confess with shame our slowness to learn of him, our failure to follow him, and our reluctance to bear the cross. We confess the poverty of our worship, our hesitating witness for Christ, our evasion of responsibilities in our service, our imperfect stewardship of your gifts. Have mercy on us, Lord, and forgive us. Amen. Hymn of Assurance: Be Still and Know #907 Assurance of Pardon bjhed2@sbcglobal.net

The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you. Before we come to the Lord s Table, we signify our reconciliation with one another by extending the peace of Christ to each other. During this winter season, if you are ill or would rather not shake hands, you are certainly encouraged to pass the peace with a smile and a nod; otherwise you are very welcome to shake hands with your neighbors as you say, The peace of Christ.

4 Preparing the Bread and Cup Communion As the bread is shared, the choir sings: Jesu, Word of God, Incarnate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Jesu, Word of God Incarnate, of the Virgin Mary born, On the Cross thy sacred Body for us with nails was torn. Cleanse us by the Blood and water streaming from thy pierced side; By thy sacred Body broken be in life and death our food. As the cup is shared, the choir sings: When You Prayed Beneath the Trees John Barnard When you prayed beneath the trees, it was for me, O Lord; When you cried upon your knees, how could it be, O Lord? When in blood and sweat and tears you dismissed your final fears, When you faced the soldiers spears, you stood for me, O Lord. When their triumph looked complete, it was for me, O Lord; When it seemed like your defeat, they could not see, O Lord! When you faced the mob alone you were silent as a stone And a tree became your throne; you came for me, O Lord. When you stumbled up the road, you walked for me, O Lord, When you took your deadly load, that heavy tree, O Lord; When they lifted you on high and they nailed you up to die, And when darkness filled the sky, it was for me, O Lord. When you spoke with kingly power, it was for me, O Lord; In that dread and destined hour, you made me free, O Lord; Earth and heaven heard you shout, death and hell were put to rout, For the grave could not hold out; you are for me, O Lord. CHURCH FAMILY Our hearts go out to Jim, (District #10) Doug, Anne, Sam, Kate, Maria, Grace and Natalie Poortenga (District #4) as they mourn the death of a dear wife, mother and grandmother. Vonnie died peacefully this past Wednesday evening, February 25. We extend our sympathy to all her loved ones and close friends. We thank God for his faithfulness to Vonnie and using her in so many ways to touch the lives of others. Vonnie has been a faithful member of Calvin Church for 51 years. She was delighted to serve in many capacities both within and outside of the church family. She will be deeply missed. Three days into an annual golf outing in Arizona, Dick Wilkins (District #6) was admitted to the hospital in Scottsdale due to pneumonia and other difficulties. He and Jan were scheduled to fly home this past Friday with their friends but Dick had to remain in the hospital. Please pray that he will regain strength and be able to fly home in the near future. Bob Schoonen-Jongen (District #4) was admitted to Butterworth hospital last weekend due to a bad reaction to an oral antibiotic. A new prescription appears to be working. Further interventions were still being discussed. The membership of Mark Stegink was transferred to Madison Square CRC where his wife, Hannah, has been a member for some time. We wish them God s blessing.

Please contact Char or Cindy Lanning Burch if you are able to help. MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS FUNDRAISER EARNINGS: Thanks to all who participated in the Soup Supper fundraiser and the Cadet and GEMS Derby this past Wednesday night. It was a great night for fellowship, delicious soups, and some great Derby races by the GEMS and Cadets. Through the generous donations, we raised $565 at the Soup Supper and $160 from the Butter Braid sales to be used toward the youth attending Crown Point SERVE this summer. To date, fourteen youth and leaders are planning to attend the service trip June 20 to 27. COFFEE GROUNDS TODAY: Specialty coffees and hot chocolate will be served after the morning worship in the Fellowship Hall. Donations are accepted and will be used to defray costs. Servers today are: Claire Brouwer, Sarah Brouwer, Aubrie Cok, Sam Koeman, and Olivia Prince. Today ADULT EDUCATION: Young children often say cute and funny things about God that sometimes differ from what they are taught. What do children really think God is like? How does that understanding change with age? What kind of mind do children bring to the task of spiritual development? In this talk, Melanie Nyhof, Postdoctoral Researcher, Indiana University, South Bend,

8 presents research on children s developing God concepts and the implications for religious education. Next Sunday ADULT EDUCATION: The church has always had a problem keeping its young people. Theories abound as to why this may be the case. In recent years several groundbreaking studies have been conducted on teenagers, young adulthood, faith identity, and church life, showing why young people tend to leave church and what to do about it. In this two-part series Todd V. Cioffi, Department of Congregational and Ministry Studies, Calvin College, will explore these issues, topics, and questions, seeking to provide practical suggestions on what local churches can do to keep their young people in church. LENT SCRIPTURE READING THIS WEEK: Monday: Mark 1-2, Tuesday: Mark 3-4, Wednesday: Mark 5-6, Thursday: Mark 7-8, Friday: Mark 9-10, Saturday: Mark WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY: Join us on Wednesday, March 4 at 9:30 AM as we study Revelation 16 led by Pastor Rebecca. Study sheets are on the table in the narthex. CANCER SUPPORT GROUP is scheduled to meet next Wednesday, March 4 at 4:00 PM in the conference room. FISH: The next date for Calvin Church participation in the FISH program is Tuesday, March 10. Our volunteers are appreciated and can expect to receive a call on March 9 if their services are needed. It would be helpful if you let Ken Lobbes know if you will not be available to drive on March 10. Check out the KIDSHOPE bulletin board near the Fellowship Hall. Read the thank you notes written by Campus students to our congregation! PANCAKES FOR VBS: Sunday, March 15, following the worship service you are invited to a breakfast fundraiser. Because of budget reduction, we are seeking to raise funds to support a VBS program this summer. Our goal is $1,000, and $200 has been pledged. INTERGENERATIONAL EVENT: The congregation is warmly invited to attend a youth-led fundraiser March 14, from 1 to 4 PM, for 40 for Haiti and for CYG SERVE. 40 for Haiti is a Habitat for Humanity Kent County project which raises funds to train Haitians in construction skills which enable them to build roads, houses, and other needed things. The event will take place at the 3 MILE Project. This 34,000 square foot former warehouse contains mini-movie theatres, table games, sport courts, observation areas, a re-ball arena, a skateboard park, video games, and a café. Congregation members of ALL ages: please invite friends to join you for this wonderful afternoon of fun and fellowship together! The Plymouth Heights CRC congregation is joining us! Cost of event is donation only, which you may choose to go to either cause, 40 for Haiti or CYG s SERVE trip.
