5 Calvin CRC Announcements for March 20, 2016 WORSHIP Today, 10 AM and 5 PM Morning worship: The story of Jesus' triumphal entry is told, our Cherub and Covenant Choirs lead us in our ministry of music, and Rev. Rebecca Jordan Heys preaches from Luke 19:28-40, Shout! Evening worship: Rev. MacLeod is preaching from Genesis 26, "You Are Now the Blessed of the Lord." We will worship in the sanctuary. WORSHIP Maundy Thursday, March 24 7:00 PM worship: We will celebrate the sacrament of communion in this Tenebrae service as we remember Jesus' last supper with his disciples and as we follow Matthew after he abandoned Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Sanctuary Choir will contribute to our worship. WORSHIP Next Sunday, March 27 Easter Morning worship: Our Sanctuary, Covenant, and Cherub choir help us welcome this glad morn! Rev. MacLeod will be preaching from Matthew 28:1-10, "Check it Out!" The offering will be for Baxter Community Center. There will be no worship service on Easter evening. Staff Notes: Char Bulthuis is out of the office through March 23. Please contact Sue Keegstra, chair of the Education Committee, or the church office, if needs arise. Kim Fredricks is on vacation this week. Linda Fridsma will be staffing the office. COUNCIL NEWS CONGREGATIONAL MEETING: After the morning service we will elect Elders and Deacons for the next council year beginning in May. Nominated and willing to serve for Elder: Dwight Baker, Helen Bode, Linda Fridsma, Doug Poortenga, Suzi Steketee. Nominated and willing to serve for Deacon: Kris Bergh, Kathy Cok, Corrin Meyer, Sam Poortenga, Kim Stapert. From The Elders: The Elders would like to thank the many members of the congregation who provided their feedback on the Evening Worship Service. We were pleased with the sincerity and candor of the responses that we received. While we did not expect a loud outcry in favor of discontinuing the evening service, we also did not expect the depth of support that the evening service received. As a result of your feedback the Evening service will continue to be scheduled for the near future. The Council recently approved the creation of a new Planning and Vision Committee. This committee will take up the mission of the church as well as the subject of the number and type of worship services that best fit Calvin. More to come on that topic soon.

6 At its meeting this month your Council heard reports from the Pastoral staff about how they are phasing into the new shared ministry model. It is expected to be some months before the model is fully implemented. Council also worked to craft a mandate for the new Planning and Vision Committee that was approved last month. Council also approved the Building and Grounds committee to invest up to $10,000 in energy-saving lighting and heating evaluations and improvements in Building and Grounds has recently changed all parking lot light bulbs to energy efficient LED bulbs which are expected to pay back their $2,000 cost in 14 months. CHURCH FAMILY Gene DeLange (district 1) is at Breton Woods Rehab recovering from the flu. Pray for Richard Stoner (district 6) as he is home recovering from heart bypass surgery. We welcome James and Cindy Brink and sons, Andrew and Jacob who join us from Beckwith Hills CRC. Terry & Brenda Boer have transferred their membership to All Shores Wesleyan of Spring Lake. CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK: 3/22 Ian Ezinga (18!) 3/23 Lydia Tolsma (11!) UPCOMING CLASS SCHEDULES: March 20: All classes meet. March 28: Easter Sunday: TLC class meets, Children s Worship Center and Church School do not. April 3 and 10: TLC, Worship Center and Church School classes do not meet. TLC children may attend nursery or the sanctuary for worship. 78ERS: Dates to save: April 13 will be our next Wednesday night meeting, and Saturday, April 23, from 11 to 1:30 PM will be our next event. We join several other middle school youth groups in a trip to Craig s Cruisers for games, fun and our favorite All You Can Eat Lunch. CYG TONIGHT: Please join us at 6:30 PM for pizza, discussion, small groups, and activity. High school students and friends invited! All women are welcome. LENTEN BREAKFAST: Reserve March 23 at 9:30 AM for the Lenten Breakfast. ALL are invited. This is a time for reflection, remembering and celebration for what our Lord has done. Judy Bode will speak and we'll sing a song she has written. Also invite family, friends and neighbors. Sign-up sheet is on the table in the narthex. KIDSHOPE/CAMPUS ELEMENTARY CONNECTION: We need mentors! Can you give an hour of your time between 11-2, any day, weekly from now till Memorial Day? We have one first grade girl, three second grade boys, one each third grade girl and boy, one fourth grade boy that all need mentors. We have their permission slips and paperwork completed. SEVERE WEATHER POLICY: Calvin CRC meetings, activities, and worship services will be automatically cancelled if any of the following weather advisories are still in effect for Kent County within one hour of scheduled events: Tornado Watch, Tornado Warning, or Severe Thunderstorm Warning. If a Tornado Watch or severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued after a worship service or meeting has begun, the service or meeting will continue. If a Tornado Warning sounds during worship services or meetings, the congregation will immediately take shelter in the basement until the warning clears. DERBY RACES AND FUNDRAISER SUPPER: Wednesday, April 27, we will have the annual Cadet and GEMS Pinewood Derby Race. Calvin CRC will be hosting a week-long day camp with Spring Hill at our church this summer. Supper will be provided as a fundraiser for scholarships for neighborhood youth. Please join us for a great time at the races to support these youth programs.
