8 Calvin CRC Announcements for 13, 2015 WORSHIP Today, December 13 The Third Sunday of Advent Morning worship: We light the Third Advent candle (Joy) as part of our Church School Christmas program "For the Glory of the King." Evening worship: Our worship service, held in the sanctuary, includes a hymnsing of Advent and Christmas carols and Rev. MacLeod preaching from Genesis 22, "The Wisdom of Ludicrous Faith." WORSHIP Next Sunday, December 20 The Fourth Sunday of Advent Morning worship: Our Cherub and Covenant Choirs will begin our worship and light the fourth Advent candle (Love). "The Cosmic Battle" in Revelation 11:19-12:17 illustrates that the arrival of the Messiah has cosmic and present day implications. Our offerings will be for the Ministry Fund. Evening worship: Our annual Service of Lessons and Carols will be held in our sanctuary featuring the Calvin Church Festival Choir, our adult handbell choir, Advent scripture readings, the Cherub and Covenant Choirs, and several instrumentalists. Their contact information is in your Fall 2015 Church Directory. Ruth & Rodger Rice (district 11) have decided on some focused radiation treatments for the two tumors in Ruth's brain. Sylvia Wevers (district 12) returned home from the hospital last weekend, her troubling symptoms are gone, and she has been thankfully gaining strength this past week. Kim & Lee Wierenga (district 6) welcomed an 8 lb. 9 oz. baby boy, Nico Philip, on Tuesday evening, December 8. Mother and son are doing well. Thank you for the lovely meal that was brought and all the nice cards and notes I have been receiving. Kaye VanderWerp

9 We are grateful for all the cards and expressions of care and sympathy in the past weeks after the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Gerrit Van Dyke. What a blessing to know that we are not our own but belong to our Savior, and to experience the care of Christ through His church. MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS THE REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT COMMITTEE thanks the congregation for such generous support shown during the collection of Welcome Pack items needed to outfit the expected new family. Not only did you donate all of the requested smaller items; you also provided enough furniture to fill the Refugee Storage room to capacity. Thank you for demonstrating such fine hospitality. Please pray that a family of God s own choosing will soon arrive for Bethany Christian Services to place in our care. THANK YOU, COOKIE BAKERS: Much appreciation and thanks to all who contributed Christmas cookies for the children to decorate this past week. COFFEE GROUNDS TODAY: Specialty coffees and hot chocolate will be served after the morning worship in the Fellowship Hall. Donations are accepted and will be used to defray costs. NOTE CARD SALE: CHECK OUT our new note cards for this year, which add to the great shots taken by youth and leaders the past many years! This is a significant opportunity for our youth to earn funds toward our summer trip. Please consider purchasing some as a gift. Over 85% of your cost of purchase goes to benefit the youth trip. 10 CAMPUS SCHOOL HOLIDAY STORE: Volunteers are needed to help set up the Shop on December 16 from 1:00-3:00 PM. Additional volunteers are needed to help staff the Shop on December 17 between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. FAMILY SUPPER, WEDNESDAY December 16: A light supper will be provided at church for young adults and their children, especially those involved in Wednesday evening programming. A suggested donation from each family will cover the cost of the meal. Food will be served from 5:00-6:30 PM, and nursery care will be provided from 5:30-7:00 PM. KIDSHOPE GIVING TREE: Calvin CRC and Fuller Ave CRC KidsHope programs are partnering to gather needed classroom supplies at Campus School. Many teachers purchase these supplies themselves. We would like to help with a Giving Tree! In the atrium there is a Christmas tree and on it are stars with classroom supplies listed. Please take a star to fulfill the classroom supply wish list for Campus School teachers. Place your unwrapped item under the tree. Calvin and Fuller KidsHope directors will deliver the items in the New Year. REQUESTED ANNOUCEMENTS VOLUNTEER TAX PREPARERS: Did you know that tax credits reduce poverty, promote work, and improve the school performance of children? Can you help lower-income families receive important tax credits? We'll provide the free training, materials, equipment and support that you need to be an IRScertified volunteer tax preparer. Training will take place on January 16 and 23. A team of Oakdale Neighbors volunteers will prepare tax returns on Thursday afternoons or evenings. Mark Charles, a Navajo American who has served on the CRCNA Board of Trustees and the Synodical Study Committee on The Doctrine of Discovery will lead a workshop that will include the Blanket Exercise (crcna.org/blanketexercise) and an analysis of The Doctrine of Discovery in the history of our country s relationship with Native Americans (crcna.org/ministries/initiatives/doctrinediscovery-task-force). The recommendations from the task force studying the Doctrine of Discovery will be presented to Synod More workshop information will soon be available on the Church of the Servant and the Classis GR East websites (coscrc.org & classisgreast.org).
