Music and Motion, a mom and kids group, is off to a good start with as many as ten moms from the church and neighborhood attending. Wednesday Night Supper was served recently and will be served again on October 28. Participation has been strong. Bon Appetite, a new supper ministry, has also started with up to forty participants enjoying a meal and conversation. Council also committed to continued funding for the Eastown Ministries basketball program in order to obtain a matching denominational grant. The Treasurer reported that 3rd quarter offerings represented a significant downward change from the very positive giving trends experienced in the first half of the year. Summary statements were distributed to members boxes last week.

5 Work continues in the Ad Hoc Committee and the Council to craft a revised ministerial structure due to the retirement of Rev Koornneef. This work is ongoing, but in the home stretch. Council appreciates the congregation s patience as we work through all aspects of the matter thoughtfully and deliberately. The Elders approved the membership transfer of the Jason & Julie Wigboldy family to Sherman Street CRC and of Elaine DeStigter to LaGrave CRC. While we will deeply miss their regular presence at Calvin Church, we pray for God's blessing at their new congregations and rejoice in their continued witness to the kingdom of God. CHURCH FAMILY With praise and thanksgiving, the following birthdays will be celebrated during the month of November: 11/5 Mae Holwerda (87) 11/8 Marge Lepsch (89), Bernice Ritzema (89) 11/16 Elaine Harper (89) 11/30 Marilyn Lobbes (85) David and Sarah Williamson (district 3) rejoice in Ruth Eliana's birth on Wednesday, October 14. Betty Wiersma (district 11) was released from the hospital on Wednesday for rehab at Breton Manor. Give thanks to God with Gert Bokhout (district 6) as the PET scan of her lung was negative. Gene DeLange (district 1) covets your prayers as he experiences increased weakness and swallowing problems resulting from Parkinson s Disease. Currently, he is trying a Physical and Speech Therapy program designed for people suffering with Parkinson s. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, cards & visits during my father's illness and passing. We felt peace and comfort. We are deeply grateful to be members of the Calvin Church family. Dan, Kim, Grace, & Luke Spoelma Dear Calvin Church friends; how good it was to receive and read all of the kind thoughts and wishes for my 95 th birthday. Thank you to all of you. Henry Beltman Thank you, dear Calvin Church family, for remembering us with your prayers, calls, visits, and meals during the time of the death of my brother, in California, and my recent knee surgery. MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS Today ADULT EDUCATION: Topic: The CRC and Same-Sex Marriage; Asking Questions. What did Synod 2013 have in mind when it appointed a Committee to Provide Pastoral Guidance for Same-Sex Marriages? Our own Rev. Karl Van Harn is a member of this committee. We hear the story behind the Study Committee s mandate, see a snapshot of the perspectives in the CRC from one year ago, and listen to each other as we begin to talk about some of the questions raised by Christians as same-sex marriage has become legal. Next Sunday ADULT EDUCATION: Christian Perspectives and a Reformed Perspective. Rev. Karl Van Harn will review with us different perspectives on same-sex orientation among Christians and what they mean regarding same-sex marriage, draw from an approach called principled pluralism developed by Abraham Kuyper, and discuss the possibility of living with two definitions of marriage. Is the U.S. a Christian nation? If not, how do we relate to public policies with which we disagree? Does principled pluralism apply to disagreements within the church, too? MISSION COMMITTEE: Thank you for your support of our Mission causes. If you have not yet had an opportunity to fill out one of the gold pledge cards for the coming year, please pick one up from the information desk. Put the completed card in the Mission Mailbox near the elevator by November 1. Don t miss out on this opportunity to help fulfill the Great Commission.
