5 Calvin CRC Announcements for April 16, 2017 WORSHIP Today, 10 AM and 5 PM Morning worship: We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rev. Rebecca Jordan Heys preaches from John 20:1-18, and our Sanctuary, Cherub, and Covenant Choirs lead us in music, including the singing of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. Evening worship: We are invited to worship with Woodlawn CRC. Rev. Bryant DeKruyter preaches Adopted, Glorified, Conquerors from Romans 8: The offering is for Bethany Christian Services. Nursery is provided. WORSHIP Next Sunday, April 23 Morning worship: We will ordain our own Arianna Tolsma to the office of Minister of the Word. The Scripture Proclamation Team will lead us in hearing from 1 Samuel 3, and Rev. Rebecca Jordan Heys will preach. Our Covenant and Cherub Choirs and Junior Bells will lead us in music. The offering will be for Baxter Community Center. Evening worship: Our service will feature an introduction of the plans proposed by the council-appointed Planning and Vision Committee. Pastor Rebecca will be our liturgist; members of the committee will roll out key ideas and invite discussion and feedback, offering opportunity to further shape recommendations before the final document goes to council. Cookies and beverages will add an enjoyable element; child care will be available. We covet your participation! The offering will be for the Pine Rest Assistance Fund. COUNCIL NEWS Council is pleased to share that the following persons have indicated that they are willing to serve the Lord as Deacons or Elders of Calvin Church. For Deacon: Tammy Baker, Cindy Brinks, Jesslyn DeBoer, Leanne Hendrikse, Judith Stoner, Michael TerBeek. For Elder: Walter DeBoer, Jay and Shirley Lindquist, Stan Mathay, Ron Rozema, LeRoy Stegink, Glenn Triezenberg. Council is thankful for the Lord s provision of these slates of candidates. CHURCH FAMILY Al Bratt (district 2) is in Butterworth Hospital being treated for pneumonia. Pray for healing and strength for him and Marilyn. John Ver Hulst (district 1) was admitted to Blodgett Hospital this past Wednesday with low oxygen and fluid around his lungs. Ellie Zwier (district 10) was re-admitted to Blodgett Hospital this past Thursday.

6 CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES TLC: 2-4 year-olds We Celebrate Easter Melanie, Morgan, Carolyn THE COVENANT AND CHERUB CHOIRS will be finishing their season next week Sunday, April 23, with the traditional singing of Look at the World. Parents of choristers and former choristers are invited to join us for this anthem. Parents will rehearse with the choirs at 9:00 AM on Sunday morning, April 23. Please plan to join your sons and daughters at that time. Former choristers may join us after the last hymn that morning. See you all there! MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS Next Sunday ADULT EDUCATION: Moving Towards Generosity Presenter: Jeff Munroe, Vice-President of Operations and Advancement, Western Seminary. The Bible has a lot to say about the place of money in our lives. At the same time, our culture screams contrary messages that tie our self worth into our net worth, and advocate a lifestyle defined by conspicuous consumption. The Biblical concept of generosity is an antidote to the problems raised by consumerism and the love of money. This class will suggest ways to move toward generosity with our wallets, our possessions, and our lives. WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY: We will meet on Wednesday, April 19, from 9:30-11:00 AM. We ll be looking at chapter 10, Time and Gifts, from Christian Disciplines by Andrea Sterk and Peter Scazzero. LECTO DIVINIA SMALL GROUP: We will meet next week Sunday, April 23, from 11:45-12:15 in the lounge. All are welcome. CALVIN CHURCH GARDEN CLUB hopes to begin the season with our traditional stroll through Aman Park s amazing swaths of spring wild flowers. Please join us in the church parking lot at 3:00 PM on April 26 for the carpool. FOOD TRUCK: You are invited and encouraged to serve those in need by handing out food from 4 to 6 PM at Sigsbee School on Thursday, April 27. This will be a very rewarding experience! Contact any deacon to sign up. We still need more helpers. VBS PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Dear Congregation, all are invited to a pancake breakfast following the morning service on May 7. This breakfast will be the sole fundraiser for VBS this year. Please come and support this important outreach ministry for our neighborhood and our Calvin children! Stop by the VBS signup table as well, to check out volunteer and donation opportunities. ACCESS HUNGER WALK: This year's walk is on May 7 at 2:00 PM starting from Park Church. In its 40th year the theme of the Hunger Walk is to celebrate and show solidarity with our community. We celebrate the strides we have made in creating a secure food system. We show solidarity with our

7 neighbors of every economic background and recognize that much work remains to be done. Calvin Church has a long record of participation in the Hunger Walk and its current walking team (Pastor Rebecca, Cindy Burch, and Bob DeVries) covets your continued support on behalf of the hungry in our midst. FAMILY ASSISTANCE PROJECT: If you'd like to help make our project debt-free and haven t yet made a commitment, here are two ways you can help. You may place your gift, marked Family Assistance Project, in the collection plate along with your other offering or pick up one of the Gift Commitment Forms from the Information Table, complete the form and return it to Ron Rozema s church mailbox. Thanks! REQUESTED ANNOUNCEMENTS You're Invited to the Legacy Christian School Auction! This fun event will be held on Saturday, April 22 and will feature dinner catered by Enza's Catering. The silent auction begins at 5:00 PM. Dinner will be served from 5:30-7:00 PM. The live auction begins at 6:45 PM. Proceeds will benefit the Legacy Christian General Fund. We have many great items up for grabs including home goods, handcrafted wood items, golf packages, lots of gift cards, the ultimate camping package, an XBox, kids bike, grill set, and much much more! On Monday, April 24, the Grand Rapids Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will hold a double-header young organists competition at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 700 Ethel Ave. SE. The bi-annual American Guild of Organists/Quimby Competition will be held at 1:00 PM and the annual Annamae Rotman Competition at 7:30 PM. Come and hear a total of five organists ranging from age 16 to 23. It will be exciting to hear these young organists and their interpretations of a wide range of organ literature and approach to accompanying congregational hymn singing. Everyone is welcome to attend. Join the Calvin Alumni Choir for its 40 th anniversary concert, Celebrating 40 Years of Song. Culled from choir members and audience favorites, the concert will feature works by Ola Gjeilo, Morten Lauridsen, Stephen Paulus, and the choir s own Roy Hopp. Join the song at 3 PM, Sunday, April 30 concert at Trinity Lutheran Church (2700 Fulton St E, Grand Rapids.)
