Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession (Unison) Father God Father of all families. We confess that we have failed to know You and Your people. We have made You too small in our eyes. We have measured ourselves and others by the yardstick of this world, instead of through the eyes of Your love. Forgive us, Father. Help us live with Christ Jesus. 8 NOTICES Our guest preacher this morning is Shannon Hanson. Shannon is a member of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in North Wilmington and an Inquirer under care of New Castle Presbytery in the process of preparation for ordination to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. She is a mother to sons Ben and Jack, and works as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Meeting Ground Workday Planned September 8, :00 AM-1:00 PM On Saturday, September 8th, the Mission and Outreach Committee is planning a workday for all members of our congregation at Meeting Ground, a homeless shelter at Clairvaux Farms near Chesapeake City, Maryland. Rev. Carl Mazza is the Executive Director. As we have done in the past, we will perform duties such as window cleaning, garden tasks, watching the children while the parents do other things, and cleaning the picnic pavilion, etc. We hope to have a larger group than last year s participation of 22 members. The Youth Group joined us last year and really was a big help so we are hoping the youth will join us this year, too.

9 To prepare for our work trip, we are asking for each member s help in one of these ways: Donate a new or slightly used preschool toy for the children at the shelter Donate new or slightly used activity books, washable markers, reading books, and crayons suitable for elementary age children. Donate a monetary gift for us to be able to prepare a hot lunch for all members in the work group and all residents of the shelter. Money can be given to Linda Neel. Our committee will prepare the hot lunch. Please call Linda Neel to offer help or sign up for the day on the sign-up sheet in the CE Building. We hope to see you there!!!!!!! 10 Summer Craft Workshop A Summer Craft Workshop will be held Monday, August 13th, at 7:00 PM at Linda Neel's home in Newark to make bracelets to be sold at the Spirit of Christmas event. All monies raised for the Spirit of Christmas program will benefit Friendship House again this year. Each volunteer will be asked to contribute $7.00 for supplies if you want to take a bracelet home for yourself at the end of the evening or pay nothing and just come and string beads!!! 11 British Implement Cargo Tax at Fort Casimer Fort Casimer was repaired in 1706 for Her Majesty s service as authorized by the assembly of the lower three counties. All vessels were then required to drop anchor before passing the fort while the commander went ashore to report and pay a tax on each ton of cargo. Should the ship fail to stop, it was to be fired upon and an additional tax imposed for each cannon shot. The merchants of Philadelphia were outraged. The owner of the sloop Philadelphia told the governor that he intended to defy the order. The governor at once set off for New Castle on horseback to alert the fort. This vessel was duly cleared at Philadelphia and set off down river. It passed the fort under full said, was fired upon, but received only one shot through its mainsail. John French, the commander of the fort, pursued the sloop in a small boat. He was hauled aboard, but then taken prisoner. Lord Cornbury, the vice admiral of the Queen s fleet, happened to be moored at Salem, NJ. Hill surrendered commander French to the admiral and proceeded on his way to Barbados. The law was soon rescinded and the governor superseded. - Bob Swick
