2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW ASSOCIATE PASTOR, FR. JOJI Greetings from Fr. BalaJoji Thanugundla, better known as Fr. Joji. It is a great privilege and a blessing for me to introduce myself to the Catholic community of Saint Anne as I am looking forward to joining you to serve and celebrate my priestly ministry. I come from a family of six children, four boys and two girls. I am number five in order, and I have a younger sister who lives in the city of Chicago on the northwest side. My father passed away in One of my brothers also is a priest (Fr. Jerome), working in India. I was born in 1968 in Warangal, a small town in South India, and my family moved to Hyderabad (a big city in South India) in I finished my high school and college in Hyderabad. I studied Theology (B.Th) in Bangalore and was ordained a priest in I also completed my Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology in Hyderabad. I came to the United States in 1997 and worked in various parishes as an associate pastor. My first appointment was at Immaculate Heart of Mary, on the northwest side of Chicago, then, in 2003, I went to the south side to St. Gerald Parish in Oak Lawn. In 2009, I came to St. James in Arlington Heights and worked there for seven years. I have learned a lot from these various communities and am still learning to grow in faith. I have learned and experienced that God dwells in each of us, and it is up to us to make Him alive. I have tremendous conviction that God is unconditionally loving us every moment, leading and guiding us. I always enjoy being pastoral, connecting with people celebrating Sacraments. I have been deeply satisfied by the fact that I have been loved by people, and I hope I have loved them in my ministry as a Priest. I enjoy being part of the school and religious education to share my presence and interact with children and bring them closer to God. I have been part of RCIA groups, conducted Bible studies and was part of many other ministries. Working at St. James for 7 years taught me much, and the busy schedules and nonstop invitations and parties made me realize the need to be connected to people at a deeper level. Besides church work, I am interested in all sports and social gatherings. I used to play lot of soccer but after breaking both my ankles, I stopped playing. I am a good ping pong player and one of the best Baggo players. I do not want to brag, but I am really good. I am open to a challenge. I am truly excited to be here with you to serve, to love and to celebrate my priestly ministry. I have been to Saint Anne few times. I know Fr. Bernie and Fr. Chris. I am anxious to join them and the staff, to get to know you and to begin my life here. Thank you for your warm welcome. Peace and blessings, Fr. Joji Thanugundla 2 Saint Anne Church July 24, 2016 stannebarrington.org

Worship LITURGY CORNER Edited by Rory Cooney PARTICIPATION AND MINISTRY The vision of Vatican II of full, conscious and active participation of the assembly during liturgy requires a formed assembly. That is, all of us need to understand the meaning of the parts of the celebration and what their role is in them. We all need to understand the importance of our role and how to participate fully. It is the responsibility of the parish and its ministers to assist us in this. However, we can take responsibility on our own and read pertinent books and magazines or attend workshops. The Archdiocese occasionally offers days of liturgical renewal that are advertised in the Catholic World and on the archdiocesan website. All of us in liturgy and faith formation are willing to help if a group wants to learn more about liturgy and our role in it; all you need to do is ask. Many of us are used to thinking of the priest as the person who holds the responsibility for the parish and the liturgical celebrations. This is especially true if we come from a pre-vatican II experience, especially those of us over 50. But Vatican II opened up ministry for all of us. It made ministry not only a possibility but said that it is our right and responsibility by virtue of our baptism. There are many different ministries in the parish and not all of them are specifically liturgical ministries. We can all pick something that suits our time, talents and abilities. Even if we do no other ministry, we should be active members of the assembly. This is the most important ministry in the liturgy. It is important that we take it seriously and do our part with energy, enthusiasm and focus. Edited and adapted by Rory Cooney from Liturgical Bits and Bytes, 2013 RPI. To be continued next week... There are also 8 small group sessions hosted in a catechist s home. We use Matthew Kelly s program, Decision Point, which has been well received by the students and catechists. Students are also expected to volunteer in the community over the two years. Second year candidates are required to participate in the Spiritus Retreat, a one day interactive retreat, held at the Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. For more information about the program, Michael Hugo at mhugo@stannebarrington.org or Karen Poglitsch atkpoglitsch@stannebarrington.org. 6 Saint Anne Church July 24, 2016 stannebarrington.org Why is it often so difficult to forgive others? When we are hurt, the scars can feel like they are etched in stone. Without forgiveness, it is our hearts that become like that stone, with layers of hurt forming permanent scars. It is through forgiveness that we soften our hearts and cast off the scars. Jesus forgave us our sins on the Cross, yet it is still difficult for us to forgive others and especially hard to forgive ourselves. We each have truths in our lives that we avoid or discount. Recognizing and accepting our truths heals our hearts, transforms our minds and moves us into closer relationship with God and one another. This week, reflect on ways that you may have hurt others and on hurts that you are carrying with you. Place these hurts on the cross, giving them up to God for healing and restoration.

12 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): PATRONAL FEAST OF SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNE 17TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2016 (111C) First Reading: Genesis 18:20-32 Responsorial Psalm: 138:1-2, 2-3, 6-7, 7-8 RX = Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me. Second Reading: Colossians 2:12-14 Gospel: Luke 1:1-13 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. All four scriptures are based on a cultural value basic to understanding the way those societies operated. The patron/client relationship was the basis for interactions among people. There was no middle class; there were the rulers (priests, others associated with the Temple, Sanhedrin, landowners who either owned or held power over indebted small farmers; on the Roman side, the governors (and their minions) and the ruled who were the largest number of the society, above 90%, those with no power were captive to the wishes, good or bad, of the ruling elite, were totally dependent on whatever the elite allowed them. These last indeed felt powerless: in an agrarian economy, they controlled nothing of their existence and their destiny. Nature dictated when and if their crops would be planted/ harvested; landowners dictated how much of the harvest they could keep; the conquerors (Rome, in the time of the Christian scriptures) dictated how much after-taxes produce they would have. Subsistence farming was probably the bulk of farming. The patron/client relationship arose in this rather constricted economic setting Patron. One higher in the social ladder; well placed and well connected; controlled resources, that is, land, monies or religious practices; therefore, had all the power, were expected to use this power to distribute favors to inferiors based on friendship and favoritism. They were expected to support city or town or village as well as individual clients. Client. One lower in status; controlled little or nothing; hence dependent on those of higher standing whom they continually had to petition in order get ahead; in most cases, to simply stay even! They owed loyalty and public acknowledgment of honor to the patron. By being granted the petition, the client implicitly promised to repay the patron whatever and whenever the patron determined. By granting the petition, the patron implicitly promised to be open to future requests. These open-ended relationships lasted for generations! (Little wonder the fervor of some people, like the Zealots.) Patron/client relationships are even typical of the relationship between the head of a family and his dependents, his wife, children and servants (slaves). In general, the client relates to a patron as though the patron were a superior and more powerful relative while the patron looks after his clients as though they were his dependents. Broker. In the hierarchy of beings, brokers mediated between the patrons above and the clients below. Patrons controlled all resources. Brokers controlled all access to patrons; this middleman mediated all that the patron had to offer to the client. In the city, for example, officials brokered patronage. Religious brokers, e.g., the High Priest, would broker between people and God. In the civil sphere, Pilate was a broker between Rome and the Judean population. This is the context at play in the passages from Genesis and Luke and in Colossians. Prayer is the medium through which this occurs; it is communication between a lower status person and someone who is considered to have power over life issues, even life itself (read Genesis 18, it s short). Prayer is an attempt to gain a favor from the patron, 12 Saint Anne Church July 24, 2016 stannebarrington.org

13 Sharing the Living Story to influence his decision so that he might treat them as though they were kin. Hence, the disciples ask Jesus, the broker, to teach them how to make requests of God, the ultimate patron. Abraham, as broker, persistently urges God to save the inhabitants of Sodom. Jesus, the broker, by his actions on behalf of his clients, the Colossians, gains life from God for them. It may be true that as one strand of the tradition maintains, the great sin of the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah was sexual (hence, the word, sodomy. Yet, another tradition heavily supports that it was their sin of injustice, their lack of righteousness, for which the people are being destroyed. See Isaiah 1:9-16 where God denounces the residents, saying what care I for your sacrifices... bring me no more worthless offerings instead, cease doing evil, make justice your aim, redress the wronged, hear the orphan s plea, defend the widow. Note Ezekiel (16:46ff) who is very clear: it is a disregard for those who are powerless, the poor, the innocent 1. Note also that while it appears that Abraham is bargaining with God, he does so from the stance of being confident 2 of God s mercy; far be it from you to do such a thing should not the judge of all the world act with justice 3 (v. 25). The further tradition at Jeremiah 5:1 has it that even if just one person is found living justly, God will pardon Jerusalem. These last three Sundays are focused on doing. Doing the part of a disciple by caring with some risk, like the Samaritan man; doing the part of a disciple by sitting, like Mary, at the feet of the Teacher; doing the part as a disciple by acting as a broker and importuning God. The tradition of Joachim and Anne who become parents of Mary is ancient but not rooted in scripture. Legend says that this old childless couple continuously and faithfully prays to have their nonblessed union relieved of the shame of having no one to continue their lineage. An angel appears to each with the same message: Anne will conceive: Mary is born. Their persistence is rewarded. Look at the gospel. At vv. 5-8, Jesus emphasizes persistence in importuning right after giving the disciples the words with which to pray at vv At vv.9-13, Jesus gives the certain assurance that they will be heard and answered: And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Prayer, persistence, assurance - that s the story of Anne and Joachim. With them, we sing the Psalm refrain for today: Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me. (Maybe read those verses as well.) So what? Could our understanding the cultural backdrop for the Hebrew scripture and the gospel modify our behavior as Catholic Christians? For example, when we pray the Confiteor, we admit our guilt before God and then we ask Mary, the angels and the saints and our brothers and sisters to pray for us to the Lord our God; we ask all these to importune our God on our behalf. 1 Contrast the NAB translation used above with the NRSV translation which renders the Greek as righteous rather than innocent. 2 This is the same confidence with which we pray the Kyrie at Mass, which is perhaps more a statement of our being certain of the mercy of God than imploring God from the position of client. 3 To act with justice is to act righteously, justly, with innocence, without guile Saint Anne Church July 24, 2016 stannebarrington.org 13

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
