4 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney Did you think you missed your chance to be part of liturgical or music ministries? No way! Here s the form: drop it off with any minister, in the collection, at Church, in the office. We will get it! Thank you. MINISTRY INTEREST FORM NAME: PHONE: I m interested in getting involved as: Eucharistic Minister Usher Greeter Lector WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN THE CHOIR I Know You Want To! Research has shown that music is good for your soul and your health. I can vouch for that. I joined the Saint Anne choir almost 20 years ago, way back in 1998, and I have to say it s one of the best things I ever did! It has been a joy and a blessing to have a wonderful choir director like Rory Cooney, who writes such beautiful music. The other great joy for me has been all the terrific friends I have made some of the nicest people at Saint Anne are or have been part of the music ministry. Eat (we have great parties!), Pray (when you sing, you pray twice!) and Love. What more could you ask for? Besides, a lot of fun singing. And learning the real names of the songs (sorry, you ll have to join the choir to find out what I mean). Hope to see you at choir rehearsal on Tuesdays, at 7:30 p.m., in the Parish Center Conference room (upstairs)! You do not have to be able to read music. You only have to want to raise your voice in praise. Give us a try we are very friendly. Saint Anne entered two teams; one team finished with 2 wins, one loss and a tie and the other team was undefeated. This was the 4th consecutive win for Saint Anne at St. Viator. On Wednesday, October 18th, 2 teams ventured to DePaul Prep to participate in a tournament. They combined to go 6-0 in pool play. Saint Anne lost in the semi-final round against St. Andrew but rallied back to win the 3rd place match against St. Edward. The team has a record number of participants this year with eleven 8th graders and seven 7th graders competing for play time. The program has recently picked up twelve 6th graders for a total of 30 students participating. The team practices 4 times a week during the lunch/recess period. 10 Saint Anne Church November 12, 2017 stannebarrington.org

11 Faith Formation and Education RECAP OF WOMEN S FAITH TIME MEETING Over 25 women enjoyed a morning of fellowship at the Women s Faith Time session on Saturday, October 21st. The morning began with Mass in the Chapel. Breakfast followed in the Hospitality Room with a presentation by Beth Knobbe entitled Women s Resilience: Stories of Holiness & Strength. As women of faith, we can strengthen our capacity to endure difficult situations and maintain hope in the midst of everyday trials. Our faith not only gives us tools for survival, but we can put those practices into place even before tragedy strikes. Building resilience not only helps our own faith to grow, but we can also use those lessons to help our community and our world. To illustrate this point, Beth began by defining resilience. According to the U.S. Agency for International Development, resilience is the ability of people, households, communities, countries and systems to mitigate, adapt to and recover from shocks and stresses in a manner that reduces chronic vulnerability and facilitates inclusive growth. In a spiritual context, Pope Francis, in his Joy of the Gospel, calls us to help the poor, which will make not only the Church more resilient, but also each of us as individuals. Beth went on to describe seven qualities of resilience in women. Resilient women live their faith by example on a daily basis to promote peace and love. Resilient women are women of prayer recognize that what they have is enough celebrate the success of other women practice kindness and compassion embrace the majesty of the Cross practice forgiveness are women of action The Church and faith-based organizations like Catholic Relief Services bring the women of the world closer together, making us more resilient with common values and rituals, even though we do not share necessarily a common language. Please see the Clarion and the Saint Anne website for details about future events! 12 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2017 (154A) First Reading: Wisdom 6:12-16 Responsorial Psalm 63: 2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 Rx = My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, my God. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. LITERARY: Sundays 32, 33 and Christ the King bring this Liturgical Year A to a close. Their three gospels deal with the parousia 1 ; two are parables, and the final one is a story of judgment. All describe opposing kinds of behavior in which one might engage before the arrival of the end times. Note that the parable of the Ten Virgins (this Sunday, 25:1-13) and the parable of The Talents (next Sunday, 25:14-30) speak of the kind of service that produces no good works and is thereby in obvious great contrast to the sort of good and faithful service (Matthew 25:21) expected as we close out the year with Matthew s crystal-clear description of the final judgment (25:31-46) to be made on Judeans (Jews) and gentiles, that is, on all created humans. CULTURAL: the kingdom of heaven will be like (25:1) The focus in first century Mediterranean marriages was not on the partners but on the family. Their concern was to insure the lineage and extend the influence of the group, i.e. the extended family. Marriages were therefore arranged by fathers (with powerful input by mothers; recall Fiddler on the Roof). Only then would the wedding occur (sometimes long after it had been arranged). The social highlight would be the transfer of the bride from her father s household to the groom s father s household where the actual ceremony would take place. The final contract would be bound, and details about gifts to the groom s family would be negotiated in the household of the bride s father. In the parable, the groom has gone to get his intended. His young female relatives are to light the way for the entrance of the returning wedding party, to take part in the celebration and, as well, to await confirmation of the physical joining of the two. The wise virgins prepared; the foolish did not take enough oil with them. When the bridegroom was delayed, the oil in the lamps was depleted and the wise could not share their supply because then neither set of girls would be able to light the way. Recall that one of the cultural institutions was that of patronage. This is layered onto the sense of God as father. God is seen additionally as patron or godfather (like the stereotypical Italian godfather). A patron would select people to sponsor as though that person was a member of the family; these clients would then consider themselves very fortunate to have a patron who would protect their welfare; they would seek to strengthen the relationship by paying close attention to the patron s every need and wish. Unprepared or dull-witted or foolish clients obviously risked losing their patrons. It would not seem harsh to Matthew s readers to learn that Jesus says at 25:12, Amen, I say to you, I do not know you in response to the plea, Lord, Lord, open the door for us! The message was clear to those of Matthew s readers who were expecting Christ s imminent return: since they know neither the day nor the hour, they must be ever vigilant, that is, always remaining in correct or right relationship with others which would therefore be in proper relationship with the bridegroom. This is a parable. A parable has only one point; all other considerations are minor. Keep in mind that not only are we at the end of this liturgical year, but we are approaching the end of Matthew s gospel book. Both are hinting at the end times (see v.31 of this chapter!). Since we are each responsible for being in correct relationship (we used to call it being in the state of grace), we can t let anything distract us. Therefore, we must stay alert for we do not know the hour (cf. 25:13). 12 Saint Anne Church November 12, 2017 stannebarrington.org

13 Sharing the Living Story So What? 1. Amen, I say to you, I do not know you. Is this an example of reward or punishment? Is this how we are to relate to God acting in such a way as to merit or earn salvation? Is that the way God relates to us: if we act in a prescribed way, we are rewarded; if we don t, we are punished? What to make, then, of vv in Wisdom, chapter 6 today? And the heartfelt plea we make in the Psalm Refrain today: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, my God, and the firm confidence in the Lord that we declare at verses 2, 4, 6, ending with v.8, you are my help, and in shadow of your wings I shout for joy. 2. What s the answer to those who are caught without oil at the time when the bridegroom is right there with us? But the wise ones replied, No, for there may not be enough for us and you (v.9). Is Matthew describing a case of being uncharitable toward those who seek our help at the last moment? Is this the way God will respond to us if we make a last-minute appeal? What then, is God s justice? Is it like human justice? Is the unfathomable love that God is, not to be counted as merciful? 1 The Second Coming of Christ when he will make the final judgement; also called the eschaton or end times Saint Anne Church November 12, 2017 stannebarrington.org 13

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian.
