2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig MAKE A DIFFERENCE A young man was walking along the ocean and saw a beach on which thousands of starfish had washed ashore. Further along, he saw an old man walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean? he asked. Because the sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I don t throw them further in, they ll die. But don t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You can t possibly save them all; you can t even save one-tenth of them. Although you work all day, your efforts won t make any difference at all! The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea, saying It sure made a difference to that one! Jesus went back to glory after finishing his work on earth. Do you think the angels or saints, upon meeting him in heaven and welcoming him home, might have wondered who had Jesus left behind to carry on his work on earth? When Jesus ascended into heaven, we know from Scripture that he left behind a little band of fishermen, farmers and homemakers to carry on his work. We might say that his backup plan was the Church. What an awesome and incredible plan! Here were the Christians of Rome, dug into the earth, tunneling out of sight because of the terrors of Nero up above. They were nothings in the world the poor, despised and quite insignificant! yet, they knew the promise of Jesus, You are my people. You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world! You are my witnesses! The early Christians knew they wouldn t fail in carrying out Jesus plan because they were God s people. Imagine this crowd to which Jesus was speaking over 2,000 years ago. It wasn t a gathering of the United Nations or a conference of superpowers, a sitting of Congress, Parliament or even an assembly at City Hall. It simply was a crowd on the hillside in a tiny spot of land called Palestine. It was a group of common people with no high ambitions or positions. They couldn t even make their own laws or plan their own futures. They couldn t determine their own destinies, and yet, Jesus said to them, You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. You make a difference in this society. It wasn t that they were so smart, strong or gifted. It was because they belonged to Jesus! Is Jesus speaking to us today when he gives us that testimony? Of course, he is! He is telling each of us You can make a difference! You can make a difference in the world around you. It was Gandhi who said: You may never know what results come from your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no results. It seems, then, we must go out and tell our vision and vision requires positivity. There is no vision in just criticizing what is wrong or what is not working. Vision is only valuable when one sees clearly and recognizes what needs to be done and has the capacity to articulate and begin to create the solution. Mother Teresa said of herself, I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who sends a love letter every day to the world. Her life was based on the belief that if you can t feed a hundred people, then feed just one. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest to you. Yes, one person can make a difference! So, how can we touch the lives of those around us with small acts of kindness? Our deeds will often seem very insignificant when viewing them in the light of our vast world, but to the person you have touched, the significance becomes profound. It is obvious that we cannot change the whole world, but we can change a small part of it, a little at a time. We don t know what can be done until we try it. George Bernard Shaw wrote: The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to dislike them but to be indifferent to them; that s the essence of inhumanity. There s a story about someone who was walking through a county fair and met a tiny girl. She was carrying a big fluff of cotton candy on a stick, almost as large as she. He said to her, How can a little girl like you eat all that cotton candy? She replied, I m really much bigger on the inside than I am on the outside! On the outside, we may seem to be small, but on the inside, remember that we re as big as the kingdom, the power and the glory of our God. We can make a difference! Let WOMEN S FAITH TIME give you a way to grow bigger on the inside!! Saturday, April 18th, 8:15 to 11:00 a.m. Mass Brunch Presentation by Mary Deeley Remembering God: Resting in the Midst of Life (See the ad in the Clarion and on our website) 2 Saint Anne Church April 12, 2015 stannebarrington.org

6 Faith Formation and Education ACCEPTING GOD S GRACE TO LIVE AND GIVE IN THIS WORLD The topic for our next Community Event, Tuesday, April 14th, and Friday, April 17th, at 6:00 p.m., is Baptism and Confirmation Accepting God s Grace to Live and Give in this World. There is a close relationship between the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. While Confirmation is a distinct and complete sacrament in its own right, its purpose is to perfect in us that which was begun in Baptism. We might say that we are baptized in order to be confirmed. Confirmation represents a spiritual growing up, recognition of a maturity that allows a person to live their life in a way that is inclusive of and responsive to the needs of others. On Tuesday, April 14th, our adult speaker will be Vicky Tufano. Vicky is Senior Editor and Liturgical Consultant at Liturgy Training Publications. She has served as pastoral associate and director of liturgy at Ascension Catholic Church in Oak Park, director of liturgy for the Diocese of Des Moines, Iowa and a team member for institutes of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate. She is a frequent writer and speaker on liturgy and Christian initiation. Vicky holds a Master of Arts in Liturgical Studies and a Master of Divinity, both from the University of Notre Dame. On Friday, April 17th, our adult speaker will be Father Steve Lanza. Father Steve is currently Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Winnetka. Prior to Sacred Heart, Father Steve was Pastor at St. Julie Billiart in Tinley Park and at Notre Dame de Chicago on Harrison Street. Father Lanza is a graduate of Northwestern University and was ordained in During his various parish assignments, he has focused on evangelization. An author and co-author of textbooks in the Faith First series, he s also co-authored a resource series for RCIA participants and is working on an online RCIA resource called Apprentices in Faith. Adults, teens and children, including preschool participate in Community Events to learn and share your faith with others in our parish community. 15 Human Concerns TEEN PARISHIONER BRINGS NEW LIFE TO SHELTER PLAYGROUND WITH EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT The children and residents of St. Martin de Porres will have a beautiful space in which to enjoy the spring weather thanks to parishioner Brian Guarnieri. He brought new life to the playground of the shelter through his Eagle Scout project. Brian spent months planning, securing financing, collecting supplies and building benches before finally completing the playground renovation this past summer. The improvements included staining upper and lower decks, constructing and installing new benches, planting areas, spreading new mulch and some creative painting. The end result was beautiful; the pictures speak for themselves! THANK YOU to Brian for thinking of the residents of St. Martin de Porres when choosing his Eagle Scout project and to his family and fellow scouts who worked together to bring beauty to the shelter! The Sharing Board was proud to provide financial support for this great project. Staining the deck New benches constructed by Brian Guarnieri on newly stained deck. 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER, 2015 (44B) 1st Reading: Acts 4:32-35 Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, RX =Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love is everlasting. 2nd Reading: 1 John 5:1-6 John 20: On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. 24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 Now a week later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, Peace be with you. 27 Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe. 28 Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God! 29 Jesus said to him, Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. 31 But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. 17 Sharing the Living Story Each liturgical year, from Easter Sunday through the succeeding seven Sundays until Pentecost, we hear scripture stories exclusively from the New Testament; the exception is the sung text, the Responsorial Psalm. These are stories that proclaim that the uniqueness of the death, rising and ascension of The Christ is the perspective for our own dying and rising. After all, it is we who renewed our baptismal promises this past weekend and recalled our own passage from darkness to light, from obscure meanderings to certain pathway. It is we who were led by the great Easter candle; we saw the waters of baptism poured onto our newly baptized; we saw/smelled the sweet chrism anointing their heads; we heard Paul speak that just as Christ was raised from the dead we, too, might live in the newness of life. Over these next seven weeks, we will journey into the unpacking of that mystery of how, after the dying, the resurrection and the ascension of some 2000 years ago, the Lord is present in our lives in such a real way that we are enabled to do the mission on which God sends us all. Once again, we are tempted to stay with the miraculous told so dramatically in the gospel of the day what more would you need, eh Thomas? But move from that historical context and situate yourself within the John community in the waning decade of that first century. John gathers the oral tradition and perhaps even the written ones from others who witness and seeks to reassure those frightened ones around him, to incite a renewed faith among them. They are understandably distraught, agitated and in fear for it is almost three generations since Jesus was physically present; the Temple has been destroyed so sacrificial worship is no longer possible; the very seat of national identity is no more; the Romans have dispersed the Jews out of Jerusalem and the John community itself has been expelled from their midst since it has chosen to believe that the one called Jesus was the long awaited Messiah. These followers of Jesus, they are alone, abandoned, without anchor, to what can they look? They crouch behind their barricade; peace be with you, John s Jesus says, and they see that it is the Lord: Peace be with you, he repeats. Later, the absent Thomas comes to belief as he sees for himself and hears with his own ears, Peace be with you. And, Jesus says: Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. John continues these [signs] are written that you may come to believe that Jesus [is] the Christ, the Son of God and that through this belief, you may have life in his name. (v.30) And so it is: all the words of witness that we will hear over these next weeks are chosen to be read so that even at this much greater distance from the physical Jesus, we also can have life. The church has recently recovered a name for this process of unpacking that which we just experienced at the Vigil and on the first Sunday of Easter: it is called mystagogy. It is the exploration and reflection on a mystery experienced. How can we find hope in a Jesus who is gone, who is no longer palpable? So What? What happens as we stand to the side of the miraculous to appreciate John s theological casting of the story of the appearance of The Christ to the disciples after Mary Magdalene s announcement (v.18)? Today s portion of John boldly ends with the assurance that we have come to belief in order that we might have life. Where is it that we will have this life? Is it here, on earth? Or is it an assurance of life after physical death? If it is here that we have this life, what are we to do with it? What might our mission be as Saint Anne Christians? Listen with your heart s ear to the scriptures of the coming weeks. Lift your heart with the singing of the songs so that your inner eye might see. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at where all scheduling is done. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the GIFT office at with questions. Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call Reconciliation: Saturdays ₉:₁₅ a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
