4 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SONG STORIES SINGING THE FAITH Canticle of the Turning When Fr. John Gallen, SJ opened the Corpus Christi Center for Advanced Liturgical Studies in Phoenix in 1985, it was a watershed for me, crystallizing so much of what I had learned through the years about liturgy, giving it more structure but also more heart. It also brought together like-minded colleagues from around the Valley so that we had weekly time together to learn and share ideas. Also, Gary Daigle had just recently come to Phoenix to begin work at the Franciscan Renewal Center. When we met at one of those first classes, probably in September of that year, it was the beginning of a friendship and collaboration that has lasted over thirty years. It was a time when a lot of new ideas entered into the realm of my songwriting, and the renewed formational activity made me even more excited and interested in writing. Membership in the National Association of Pastoral Musicians had also introduced me to such lights as Ralph Kiefer, Tom Conry, Richard Fragomeni and Jim Dunning. Scripture, which had always been a guiding light for me since my early days writing music for the psalms, became even more important and enlightening when I began to see it with eyes opened to different kinds of biblical criticism, like historical, form and social-cultural and literary criticism. There was so much more there than I had known, and it was exhilarating to learn. As we drew near the Luke C year of 1988, I thought that I wanted to write a setting of the Magnificat, the Canticle of Mary, which appears at the end of chapter 1 of Luke s gospel. I had been learning that the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke are a kind of overture to the rest of the gospel, with stories of the family of Jesus and his birth that refer to and enlighten the rest of his public ministry and his death and resurrection. The Magnificat has a number of themes in it that appear in the rest of Luke and Acts, notably, the fundamental option for the poor that is central to the life of the Church in Acts and in the preaching of Jesus and Paul, the reversal of fortune that will be brought about in the reign of God, in which the differences between rich and poor, weak and strong, will be leveled, and the overwhelming faith that God s action will bring that reversal around in this world, because of who God is, just and righteous. So my reading of the canticle that starts at Luke 1:46 sounded like a sort of revolutionary anthem to me, a peaceful revolution that would fill the hungry and cast down the mighty from their thrones. What kind of music would go with that? I decided on the Irish folk tune, Star of the County Down, which Van Morrison and the Chieftains had recorded not long before on Irish Heartbeat. (County Down is in Northern Ireland; Belfast sits on the county line of Antrim and Down.) While that is a song of unrequited Irish love for sweet Rosie McCann from the banks of the Ban, there s another text that was known in Ireland, and the tune was indeed a song of war. (War and love what else do the Irish sing about?) Called The Fighting 69th, it s about the Irish Brigade, a distinguished regiment that fought in many important battles of the American Civil War. You can hear the Dropkick Murphyʹs version in all the usual streaming places. Marrying this revolutionary canticle to the love-and-war melody of Star of the County Down was pretty easy as it turned out. I kept the original rhyme scheme with its consistent in-rhyming because that is a great memory aid for people to learn a text by heart. The refrain is a less directly taken from the Magnificat text because I thought to tie the whole text together with the refrain I articulated the overarching Lucan themes of God s justice and approaching reign of God. Pretty much since its composition and recording (Canticle appeared on our first GIA album, our 5th overall, in 1989, called Safety Harbor), Canticle of the Turning has been my most popular song across all media, even into the digital age. It is featured in Lutheran, Presbyterian and Mennonite hymnals, and was sung by the choir from Goshen College (Mennonite) on the Prairie Home Companion radio show in May of 2014, when Garrison Keillor broadcast live from there. That performance is available on YouTube. Thanks always to Gary Daigle and Terry Donohoo for shaping this song from the beginning with me, and for the nice people of western Ireland (Limerick) for whom we sang it when it was still in its beta development stages, and who didn t throw anything at us. There was this moment of confusion and cognitive dissonance when we first sang it there, however, like they didn t know where they were and why this was happening. Then this old Irish priest started chanting a descant like a Celtic warrior, folks started getting into it, and I knew I d gone to the right well. Not that she needed it, but we d baptized Rosie McCann and brought her out of the pub, and off the battlefield and rugby pitch, to church. Well, for an hour a week, anyway. 4 Saint Anne Church October 22, 2017 stannebarrington.org

7 Faith Formation and Education SOUL REPAIR FINDING HOPE Come to our November Community Event all are welcome! What does it mean for religious communities to create a place for grace, a place to recover from life s injuries? Many religious communities have historical traditions that have long understood the effects of life s traumas and the suffering that threatens souls, not just in the individual, but also in the whole community. As people of faith, we will examine ways to address our brokenness and move toward healing and hope. Our adult speaker, Deacon Kevin Garvey, was ordained a permanent deacon in 2004, and completed his graduate studies at Catholic Theological Union in Serving in the Marines, he witnessed firsthand the effects on his fellow soldiers. This experience prompted him to begin a ministry in his parish, and to work with Lake McHenry Veterans and Family Services, to help others heal and find hope. Join us for our next Community Event Participate on Tuesday, November 7th or Friday, November 10th Share dinner Spend quality time with your family Explore your faith There is no fee to participate in Community Events - it is important that you register Community Events are for everyone married, single, families, empty nesters. Events begin with dinner in the Parish Center, followed by prayer, after which we explore the evening s topic. Participants come either of the two days. Adult Speaker Tuesday, November 7th Parish Center Gym Friday, November 10th Deacon Kevin Garvey 6:00-8:00 p.m. 6:00-8:00 p.m. Community Events include dinner and welcome adults, teens and children of all ages, including preschool and nursery Register with Carla Czyzewski at cczyzewski@stannebarrington.org or call for more information. 10 Faith Formation and Education THE RITES OF ACCEPTANCE AND WELCOMING The adults seeking to learn more about the Catholic faith through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) began their journey with a period of inquiry. This is a personal time of seeking and questioning about God, Jesus, faith and the Scriptures as well as the Church. The Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming are celebrated at the end of the inquiry period at the first public gathering for those seeking initiation. The Rite of Acceptance is for inquirers who wish to receive all three Sacraments of Initiation Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. After celebrating this Rite, they become Catechumens. The Rite of Welcoming is celebrated for inquirers who have been baptized in a Christian faith tradition previously and wish to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. After celebrating this Rite, they become Candidates. The Rites are a sign that these inquirers are ready to journey deeper into the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, making His life, death and resurrection the pattern of their lives along the way. After being presented to the community, they each are marked with the cross, the sign of all the faithful. We also give each of them experienced guides sponsors, mentors and others to help them as they progress. The community promises to be with the new RCIA participants on this journey. By observing our prayer, words, deeds and actions in the parish and in the broader community, they learn what it means to live as a Catholic Christian today. Although they cannot yet fully participate in the Eucharist, they will be with us during 11:00 a.m. Mass until they are dismissed to further study the Scripture readings of the day. The Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming will take place next Sunday, October 29th, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass. All of us in the Saint Anne community look forward to celebrating with them! For more information, contact Michael Beard at or mbeard@stannebarrington.org. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so also you should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2017 (145A) First Reading: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 Responsorial Psalm 96: 1, 3, 4-5, 7-8, 9-10 Rx = Give the Lord glory and honor. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. Note the psalm refrain today, Give the Lord glory and honor. Once again, keep in mind that the core value of that culture, honor/shame, is always in play. In today s gospel passage, the Pharisees, the lay religious sect who maintained that strict observance of the Law was mandatory, challenge Jesus honor with a trick question: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? At v.16, in somewhat of an aside, St. Matthew introduces the Herodians, a political party loyal to Herod who is the Roman puppet-king. He is the secular force and, although he is in contrast to the religious Pharisees, he is in opposition to Jesus. Note how this puts Jesus between the proverbial horns of a dilemma. At v.16, the disciples of the Pharisees, as well as the Herodians, hypocritically acknowledge Jesus integrity but seek to entrap him with their flattery stating, you are not concerned with anyoneʹs opinion, for you do not regard a personʹs status. But Jesus does not instantly play the core cultural game 1. The trap is cleverly set; the question is both flattering and deceptive. Both groups ask, interpret the Law for us: does the Torah allow us to pay the head tax 2 to the Roman oppressor? If Jesus replies yes, he dishonors the observantly religious group and blasphemes; if he says no, he dishonors the loyalist Herodians and risks being labeled by Rome as seditious and an insurrectionist. 3 Jesus deftly turns the tables, show me the coin they handed him the Roman coin. What are the Pharisees doing with the coin of the hated Roman Empire? After all, it is idolatrous to have it in one s possession for it bears the emperor s graven image; moreover, its inscription, Tiberius Caesar, Augustus, son of divine Augustus is sacrilegious. Religiously observant persons like the Pharisees would go out of their way to devise various methods of paying the horrid tax without handling the coin. 4 If the Herodians produced the coin, the Pharisees would still be shamed because they would be seen as having allied themselves with the turncoat Herodians who, like Herod, gave their allegiance to Rome. Jesus asks, whose image is on the coin; Caesar s, they admit. Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. This has no implications for the kingdom or for Jesus mission or for the reign of God. If one uses the Illinois Tollway, one pays for its use in the only acceptable money: the coin of the realm. In that time, it was a matter of necessity for coexistence in the secular empire of the militarily powerful. Jesus said to give to God what belongs to God and in today s psalm at v.7, we are told to give to the Lord glory and praise (emphasis mine). To so do is to put all into right perspective, that is, to act with righteousness because all belongs to God and what is ours is pure gift. If there is truly a conflict between the laws of Rome, the governing authority, and the law of God, then God would have come first. Allegiance to God is absolute. What an extreme assault to the honor of the Pharisees: to imply that they who emphasize the Law above all are not truly observing it. Even Cyrus, the pagan king of Persia, in the first reading, hears the word of the Lord of the Israelites: I have called you by your name, giving you [Cyrus] a title, though you knew me not. I am the Lord and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not therefore, Give the Lord glory and honor. 16 Saint Anne Church October 22, 2017 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story So, too, the psalmist proclaims today (Psalm 96): sing to the Lord, all you lands. Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, 4 his wondrous deeds. Give the Lord glory and honor. There is no direct answer here for us moderns. The issue of church vs. state would not have occurred to that mindset; their religion was their identity as a people, as a nation; Rome was the other, the outsider. But note what Isaiah says today at vv.5 and 6; he gives succinctly God s perspective to the pagan Cyrus: there is no God besides me, that is, not property, not prestige, not honor, not wife, not children, not career, certainly not the secular state... Again comes the psalm refrain: Give the Lord glory and honor. (emphasis mine) So What? Maybe the relevant So what is that very dilemma. What is the answer to the church vs. state question, especially when the rhetoric of politicians starts heating up? What does our conscience call us to? (Pope Benedict XVI reminded us that conscience is primary and must be followed even above church law or doctrine). What if being American and being Catholic Christians puts us in conflict? Should our faith inform our decisions about, say, the protection of the not yet born or the war on terror or the protection of those at the end of their lives or the ever decreasing paucity of funds for those with mental and/or physical disability, or... Listen with your heart to the verses of Psalm 96. Works consulted: Jerome H. Neyrey, Honor and Shame in the Gospel of Matthew 1 In order to maintain status, the perennial game of challenge and riposte (a thrusting response) is continually played: when one makes a claim to honor status, it is immediately challenged by anyone present by an appeal to a higher status in order for the challenger to gain an upper hand; this must happen publicly and ends only when one side cannot successfully answer with a counter-challenge. 2 a denarius, one day s wage, no small amount exacted from every person, slave or free, between ages 12 and 65 3 At 27:37, the charge is written over Jesus head: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews, a claim that obviously would be seditious to the Roman authorities. 4 Hence the need for money changers in the Temple 5 Note the use of the plural, lands, nations, gods, peoples. Among these many, the Lord alone is above all. Saint Anne Church October 22, 2017 stannebarrington.org 17

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian.
