4 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SONG STORIES SINGING THE FAITH My Life in Psalms, Part 1 My awakening to my vocation, I suppose, to writing music for church, really began with the psalms, in the early 1970s. If you weren t there in the 1970s, or not part of the Catholic Church, it will be hard to imagine what we went through at the time. As a child in grammar school, I was mostly part of church singing that was either boy s choir or men s and boys choir, and in Latin. Much of the music was pre-selected by the church. There was some choice in the setting of the Mass that was sung, but there was also a lot of music that was sung for each specific Sunday. As the 1960s progressed, some experimentation in church music, including singing in the vernacular by the congregation, was allowed in what came to be known as the four hymn Mass, that is, with songs sung at the beginning and end, during the Offertory and Communion. My high school years began as the Second Vatican Council ended. I was in a seminary high school in a suburb of Los Angeles, and the cardinal archbishop of Los Angeles was about as enthusiastic about the Council as Cardinal Cody was here in this archdiocese, which is to say, not at all. My seminary, I m grateful to say, was not the diocesan seminary, but one run by the Congregation of the Mission or the Vincentians, the community that runs DePaul University here and St. John s in New York. At the time, they also ran major seminaries in Camarillo, California for the archdiocese of Los Angeles, in Houston, Denver and St. Louis, among others. As a religious order, they had some independence from the local archbishop and so we were able to more quickly than surrounding parishes incorporate the changes to the liturgy, such as singing in the vernacular. It was when I got to the Vincentian major seminary in Perryville, Missouri, in 1970, that I really began to notice and participate in the energy around finding a new voice for the Mass of Pope Paul VI. At a meeting of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions that I was allowed to attend in Kansas City, I met some people who were helping to move the church along. From a newly formed group called the Composers Forum for Catholic Worship, and its founder Robert I. Blanchard, I began to hear new sounds of music for the church, written mostly for organ, to be sure, but sounding more like melodies and harmonies I was familiar with than the church music I had grown up with and different from the Protestant hymnody we had borrowed when we had nothing else to sing. Inspired by settings of Psalm 98 by Chicago composer Richard Proulx (then a newcomer) and Psalm 100 by Precious Blood Father Ralph Verdi, I began by writing psalm settings for my seminary friends for our daily Masses. Some of those, like Here I Am, Lord (I Come to Do Your Will) are still around. Today at Mass, we sang two psalm settings of mine, one that comes from my college years and one from about ten years later. The setting of Psalm 23 is the early composition. At Mass today, we sang the refrain, I Shall Live in the House of the Lord, but the first refrain I wrote for it was the familiar, The Lord is my shepherd; nothing shall I want. He leads me by safe paths; I shall not fear. At the time, I played a lot more guitar than piano. You might notice, if you are really paying attention, that the guitar riff at the beginning of the verse uses the same chord and fingering as the familiar beginning of Stairway to Heaven, though it s almost unrecognizable because it falls in a different part of the scale than in that great song by Led Zeppelin. The psalm has a very folk-like quality because that s the milieu that I came out of, the folk movement of the early 60s. (Once when we sang it with the children s choir many moons ago, one kid said It sort of sounds like Puff the Magic Dragon.) When we recorded it for our first album back in 1984, I used a refrain I wrote for Communion with it, The Lord prepares a banquet for me. At the opening of Mass, we sang a setting I wrote in the mid-80s of Psalm 100, called Come to the House. Psalm 100, like all the psalms, was part of Temple worship in Judaism, probably used for the enthronement of a king who was the visible present of the Holy One among the people. The psalm calls for all the earth to come to the temple singing for joy and to enter these courts with songs of praise. Several familiar versions of Psalm 100 exist for this reason, including Fr. Lucien Deiss s All the Earth, written in about 1964, and of course All People That On Earth Do Dwell, whose hymn tune name, Old Hundredth, comes from its being a setting of Psalm 100 composed in French for the Geneva Psalter. It s last stanza, the doxology, is perhaps the text best known for the tune: Praise God from whom all blessings flow I wrote Come to the House to have a lot of energy; my friends in my former parish were both excellent woodwind players, and the parts for flute and soprano sax gave them a workout, but it always seemed to be a strong way to begin the liturgy, with the words of scripture and an energetic melody. Because I got an early start, I have set over one-third of the 150 psalms of scripture to music, some more than once. One of my personal mantras comes from Psalm 89, a psalm I set when I was in summer school at DePaul in 1972: Forever I will sing of the goodness of the Lord. Psalms have helped shape my spirituality and career as a composer. I couldn t have had better companions and teachers. 4 Saint Anne Church October 15, 2017 stannebarrington.org

Our faith not only gives us tools for survival, but we can put those practices into place even before tragedy strikes. Building resilience not only helps our own faith to grow, but we can also use those lessons to help our community and our world. Beth Knobbe lives an intentional single life and is passionate about sharing her faith with others. She earned a Master of Divinity degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and she has a Bachelor of Science degree from Briar Cliff University. She currently serves as a relationship manager with Catholic Relief Services working with dioceses and universities to engage Catholics in living their faith in solidarity with the poor around the world. 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2017 (142A) First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-10a Responsorial Psalm 23: 1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6. Rx = I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. (6cd) Second Reading: Philippians 4:12-14, Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. LITERARY: Sundays 26 (21:28-32), 27 (21:33-43) and 28 (22:1-14) of the Lectionary give us three parables 1 in which Matthew records Jesus continuing to respond to the challenge 2 by the chief priests and elders who are the elite, the leadership of the Jerusalem temple. It is a story of a situation which, because it is very familiar to the hearer, is used to illustrate another reality which is not as easy to describe in down-to-earth terms. The insights we gain from our own continual struggle to see the reality of which Jesus is speaking can spring to life in our hearts as a revelation of the mystery of God s kingdom. 3 Today s gospel is a literary form whose classical pattern is found in the story of Nathan the Prophet and King David (see 2 Samuel 12:1, ff., it s short.): the story is told which functions as a window to a reality at which listeners are invited to look. Judgment (on the story characters) is solicited. Listeners discover that they are the ones whom they have just judged (mirror) 4 CULTURAL: Food or meals are in focus in all four scriptures for this Sunday. 5 But, it is a metaphor for which we have to dig. The gospel speaks of a royal banquet, but we can appreciate how this icon would be instantly accessible (transparent) to the Matthew reader. Who eats with whom at a given table directly reflects who is able to associate with whom in the larger society 6. A king (the chief among the elite) has prepared a wedding feast for his son, and as in any other society, common folk are not likely to be invited. This list of VIPs includes a landowner and a businessman who are certainly members of the elite. First, [h]e dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast (v.3); they refuse. Second time, he sent other servants, saying, Tell those invited: Behold, I have prepared everything is ready; come to the feast (v.4). This double invitation is a key to their social convention; then it was a common practice, but it is perhaps not exactly unknown today: after the first invitation, the guests take note of who was invited and who was not, what the extent was of the preparations being made (or not being made), and, they checked to see who was planning to attend and who was boycotting. If certain ones key people were staying away, then so would they! Note two levels of response, two insults to honor and involving two levels of shame. In the more face-saving one, they offer flimsy but insulting excuses: Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business (v.5); the rest of the invited kill the servants of the king challenging his honor severely and bring him more shame. To salvage his honor, he ups the ante: he slays them and burns their town. Then he writes them off (v.8). If the guests are not to be from the ranks of the elite, then from whom? The king goes counter-cultural here! Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find Go get those who are unlike me: the non-elite! A Mediterranean main road is in the center of town, the one into which all others funnel it s a crossroads, a plaza where the social classes might see each other and perhaps even talk to each other. Even more than today, meals in ancient times were an exclusive affair. (Recall Paul s excoriation of the Corinthian community at 1Cor 11:17.) What might the feel- 16 Saint Anne Church October 15, 2017 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story ings of the non-elite be at a royal banquet? From the king s side, there is much risk. His fellow elite might sever their relationship with him. Also, if any of the elite had determined to attend, they would be ostracized as well. In this culture, networking was the only way one survived; this action of elite banqueting with nonelite was tantamount to suicide. The option of going it alone, of standing up as an individual, really does not exist. Yet, one guest does try to go it alone. The host customarily provides a wedding garment, but this one, standing silently, does not accept the proffered garment, signifying that he does not want to take part fully in the occasion; the king is ready, the feast is prepared but this man is not ready; he did not prepare. This shame-action directed at the king demands that the insult be returned. The king acknowledges that the man not ready by ordering, Bind him cast him into the darkness outside And Matthew s Jesus continues: Many are invited, but few are chosen. The cultural message seems clear: Not only must one accept the invitation and actually show up, but also one must be ready to take part fully in the activities. This is remarkably similar to our going to Mass. The literary begins to make sense. Reading the parable through its own cultural lens, we can look in the mirror and make the judgment: we have to be fully prepared with all of our being to immerse ourselves into living the life of the creature that God had created! Could it be that there is where we meet God; that there is where sacrament occurs? So What? In our day-to-day living, what can we do to be conscious to the Psalm refrain: I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life? [Maybe listen reflectively as the cantor sings the verses of Psalm 23 at Mass or pray the entire psalm at #1173 in Gather hymnal] 1 Succinctly, a parable is a metaphor or simile drawn from nature or common life, arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness and leaving the mind in sufficient doubt of its precise application to tease it into active thought. From C.H. Dodd, quoted by Daniel J. Harrington, S.J., The Gospel of Matthew, p See 21:23-27 where Jesus is challenged to state by what authority he cleanses the Temple, heals the blind and the lame; note the classical cultural challenge and riposte. Note that Jesus raises the stakes with his counter-challenge (riposte) at v Except as noted, portions are adapted from Jean Hiesberger, Gen. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian.
