2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig REMEMBERING We can assume that remembering has been a mental activity since time began, but the actual word remember has a history (noted by some researchers) that can only be traced back to the 14th century. Today, our dictionaries and thesaurus sources list close to 100 synonyms, antonyms and meanings attached to this single root word. The act of remembering was important to the people in Biblical times because there were no printing presses and few scrolls. Obviously, there were no books, magazines, internet or computers very little, if any, ways to communicate effectively. In fact, few people could even read or write at that time. Therefore, history often had to be committed to memory and passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. Historians tell us that in Ancient Israel, it was customary to arrange larger stones in an area where something significant took place so the children would ask what the stones meant. Thus was created an opportunity to tell stories and remember the past. Obviously, it is different with us. We rely on the media and printed materials that were absent in their lives. Yet, in our daily lives, there are many situations where we want or need to train our memories to remember stories certainly stories of our families and our Christian heritage. Usually most of us try to remember things that are worth remembering. That is true in both larger situations and in the smaller daily events of life. And we all have our own precious, individual memories, but in addition to these more personal remembrances, we have the help of things like picture albums and various types of memorabilia as well as sharing at family gatherings. These provide us the opportunities to reminisce about times long past and thus bring the past up to the present. Many families have traditions and customs that recall their ancestors and the stories that surrounded their lives. It can be a very moving experience to trace our lineage and discover new things about our family history. It s fun to see what kinds of interesting or notorious characters we can uncover in our family tree. It s also fun to uncover characters in whom we can see something of ourselves and our own story. Actually, we may find that our ancestors weren t that different from us. Through their stories, we can see they, too, struggled with life s challenges and lived their faith as best they could. Finally, there are stories that go beyond the family arena; there s a larger picture of remembering. We expand into the world to remember and honor past people and events. The Vietnam Wall, the 911 Memorial, moments of silence and flying flags at half staff. These and many other commemorations remind us of important people, heroic sacrifices and historic events of the past. Thus, through those stories, we keep the dream alive! The Church, too, has instituted feasts and solemn days so we can prayerfully remember our religious history. We celebrate special days and seasons such as saints feasts, Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, Lent, Advent and numerous other times that bring the events of the saints, the church and Scripture more focused in our minds and hearts. Good remembering, as some have called it, means remembering God s active presence in the events of our lives. It means visualizing the past so well that we can relive the stories as if we are actually there once again. And so, we are inviting and allowing the good situations of the past to be our example that affect how we live today. From what has already been said, therefore, we can see how remembering helps us to see ourselves fit into a larger picture and a longer history. Therefore, each year, we set aside a month in which we focus on those who have gone before us, especially our loved ones. But, in remembering our past, it is obvious that we start by looking back. And, in looking back and remembering those loved ones and important people of our past, we are also looking forward as well. The men, women and children we remember are necessary reminders of our future when we ourselves will go to God. They are now where we will be going. Those persons stress the hope we have for our own future as they stand behind us on our own journey of life and encourage and inspire us to live well and persevere along life s journey. Certainly, we will always miss and mourn for our loved ones, but there is comfort and blessing in remembering them, for they help us to understand better who we are, whose we are and where we are and our final destination. Remembering our loved ones who have died gives us roots. These holy ones who have given us their love while they were here on earth with us and whose blood continues to flow in our veins, continue to be with us in a new way. And so, let us take time, especially in this month of November to Remember -- by recalling the stories of our beloved. Remember -- by making their stories our stories. Remember -- by keeping them in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. 2 Saint Anne Church November 5, 2017 stannebarrington.org

A songwriter never knows when a song is going to take off, and often, we have no control over who hears it or how they hear it or what they hear in it. Songs I thought would catch on quickly, never took off; others that I thought might be less promising or less likely to succeed, did very well. This song took a strange turn early, before it was even ready for publication, which helped it gain popularity quickly in a context I did not foresee. In 2005, Fr. Jack Dewes, then our Pastor, was celebrating his 40th anniversary as a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago. As a gift for that celebration, which was going to be the same day as the 5th anniversary of the dedication of our new church, I thought I d try to write a song in honor of God s goodness to Fr. Jack in his life, as well as God s goodness to us in his pastorate and the beautiful new structure we all helped to build. It was not just that for me, either, as Father Jack had brought me to Saint Anne at a time when I really needed a job, and he kept the job open for five months while I cleared up loose ends in Phoenix in my previous parish. Those of you who were around then may remember that one of the guiding principles of our building, moving from the old into the new, was to bring what we could of the past forward, so that the new structure was both traditional and new, and carried the tradition of the parish into the future. Indications of this are visible throughout the new structures, from the new but traditional statuary in the new church to the repurposing of the original painted glass window into the glass behind the tabernacle in the Chapel, from antiphonal seating that mirrors our practice celebrating in the gym (as well as ancient tradition in the Church) to the reuse of statuary and stone from the old Church in hallways and elsewhere. I wanted to include this approach in the song I wrote for Father Jack. Looking at the readings for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, I settled on the shepherd motif of Good Shepherd Sunday. I had always loved the setting of Psalm 23 by French Jesuit composer and liturgist Joseph Gelineau, SJ, written in the early 1960s and part of the earliest music written for the new liturgy. I had learned the music as a child in grade school choir, and it endured in hymnals into the new century. I wrote the refrain based on the gospel events narrated in John 21: If you love me, feed my lambs, I quoted, adding, be my heart, my voice, my hands. Then, If you love me, feed my sheep. The last line was both in keeping with Jesus s love for St. Peter, and considering the ministry of Father Jack, And for my part, I give you the heart of a shepherd. One thing that bothered me was whether I was going to be allowed to use Fr. Gelineau s music in my song. It was like Wayne and Garth from Wayne s World meeting Aerosmith: We are not worthy, groveling in front of the band. So I wrote my contact at GIA Publications, who owns the American rights to Gelineau s psalter, asked what they thought, and they said, Send it to us. What happened then was unexpected: Pope (St.) John Paul II died in April. GIA, like other liturgical resource suppliers, was scrambling for prayers and music to offer to people in the interregnum. GIA called me and said, We ve been looking at Heart of a Shepherd, and we d like to offer it pre-publication for free on our website for people to use to pray for Pope John Paul II and his successor. How would you feel about that? I was delighted, of course, and so they fast-tracked the song for publication, and people were already using it before we had a chance to sing it for Fr. Jack s jubilee. It has been featured in GIA s hymnals, Gather, Ritualsong and Worship ever since. Ten years later, I was delighted to be surprised by Heart of a Shepherd, this time as it video-bombed a Twin Cities PBS show about the liturgical composers of Minneapolis and St. Paul. You can see this wonderful show (really! it s wonderful) on YouTube. At about 48:44 on KSMQʹs On Eagleʹs Wings: Minnesotaʹs Sacred Music, a show which featured local artists like Marty Haugen, David Haas, Michael Joncas and others like Sr. Dolores Dufner, Tony Alonso, Daniel Kantor and Lynn Trapp, you will hear, behind the voice-over by Dr. Lynn Trapp, the church singing Heart of a Shep- Saint Anne Church November 5, 2017 stannebarrington.org 3

4 Faith Formation and Education SOUL REPAIR FINDING HOPE Come to our November Community Event all are welcome! What does it mean for religious communities to create a place for grace, a place to recover from life s injuries? Many religious communities have historical traditions that have long understood the effects of life s traumas and the suffering that threatens souls, not just in the individual, but also in the whole community. As people of faith, we will examine ways to address our brokenness and move toward healing and hope. Our adult speaker, Deacon Kevin Garvey, was ordained a permanent deacon in 2004, and completed his graduate studies at Catholic Theological Union in Serving in the Marines, he witnessed firsthand the effects on his fellow soldiers. This experience prompted him to begin a ministry in his parish, and to work with Lake McHenry Veterans and Family Services, to help others heal and find hope. Join us for our next Community Event Participate on Tuesday, November 7th or Friday, November 10th Share dinner Spend quality time with your family Explore your faith There is no fee to participate in Community Events - it is important that you register Community Events are for everyone married, single, families, empty nesters. Events begin with dinner in the Parish Center, followed by prayer, after which we explore the evening s topic. Participants come either of the two days. 5 Faith Formation and Education THE RITES OF ACCEPTANCE AND WELCOMING COMPLETED Congratulations to the Catechumen and Candidates of the RCIA program for completing the Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming with the Saint Anne community at 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 29th! The Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming are celebrated at the end of the inquiry period at the first public gathering for those seeking initiation. The Rites are a sign that these inquirers are ready to journey deeper into the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, making His life, death and resurrection the pattern of their lives along the way. After being presented to the community, they each are marked with the cross, the sign of all the faithful. We also give each of them experienced guides sponsors, mentors and others to help them as they progress. The community promises to be with the new RCIA participants on this journey. By observing our prayer, words, deeds and actions in the parish and in the broader community, they learn what it means to live as a Catholic Christian today. Although they cannot yet fully participate in the Eucharist, they will be with us during Mass until they are dismissed to further study the readings of the day. The new group of RCIA participants includes Catechumens Suzanne Frascogna and Don Kemp, and Candidates Terri Cox, Jeremy Elkins, Jennifer Kelly, Ross Moore, Amy Perri, Cheryl Peterson and Jennifer Shannon. Please keep them in your prayers! For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! Plans to give you a future full of hope. 6 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS PRESCHOOL Saint Anne Preschool culminated their October study of the pumpkin life cycle with a trip to Tom s Farm, Algonquin. It was the perfect day; the sun was bright after two days of rain, and off we set to see how pumpkins grow! For many of our young students, this was their first ride in a school bus and that was more excitement than many of them could bear. Our arrival was delayed by traffic and construction but that gave us more time to sing songs and enjoy the bus ride. We were met by tour guides and split into groups for our tour of the beautiful grounds. The tempting smell of apple cider donuts was everywhere as we headed for the barns. Good thing they offered the yummy smells first! There were many farm animals including cows, pigs, lambs and horses. The guides were very informative about the use of each animal on the farm and in the food chain. Next, we moved on to the produce washing area where we had tons of fun watching apples and squash getting dumped off of a conveyor belt into a tub for a bath before sale. We had a great science experiment right before us as we watched small apples and large squash be dunked into the tub and made predictions whether they would sink or float. A 5 pound turkey squash provided us with a scientific surprise. What do you think? Sink or float? Next, we headed on to the hayride! It was a perfect day for a ride into the fields. Usually, we would have gotten out and picked pumpkins off the vines. However, because of the rain in the days before, it was too muddy. But, we enjoyed the hayride and chose our pumpkins and gourds in the barn. After we picked out our own pumpkins, we were headed into the play area to climb hay bales and spider webs and other fun activities and had our snack. Finally, we climbed back into the bus for the ride home. No one wanted to leave because it was such a great day. In the days since the trip, we have been doing all sorts of fun activities with our personal pumpkins measuring, weighing, sink or float and counting activities. A pumpkin is like a learning unit that comes in its own box! Great memories of a great day will last a long time as we learn and grow together this year. Sound like fun? Saint Anne Preschool has rolling enrollment. Save your spot for next school year now! Learn about our outstanding program and see our beautiful classrooms. We welcome families of every faith. Children must be 3 by September 1st and toilet-trained. For more information, call Mrs. Nancy Meehan, Early Childhood Director, ext Saint Anne Church November 5, 2017 stannebarrington.org

12 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2017 (151A) First Reading: Malachi 1:14b-2:2b, 8-10 Responsorial Psalm 131: 1, 2, 3 Rx = In you, Lord, I have found my peace. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13 Gospel: Matthew 23:1-12 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. LITERARY The literary device we have seen in past weeks is also present here: today s story about the scribes and Pharisees is the window (vv.2-7) for Matthew s readers to look through and to discover that it is they on whom judgment is being passed when they see their reflection in the mirror see vv.8-12 noting that Jesus criticizes the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy and then says to the crowds and the disciples at v.8, As for you Indeed, all four scriptures point out that justice (God s justice, or right relationships) requires integrating the inner self (one s beliefs) with one s outward actions, in other words, don t behave as an actor acting, during which what one sees is not the inner part of one but is what one is portraying. At v.13 ff., Matthew inveighs against hypocrisy (the seven woes ), calling the scribes and Pharisees hypocrites but it is a mirror for the crowds and his disciples (v.1). CULTURAL Note carefully that Matthew is making a point as he writes down for his community that Jesus tradition that had been circulating orally among them. He shifts from the chief priest and elders to the scribes and Pharisees 1 who try to gather the scattered people into a cohesive, recognizable group to enable them restore their very identity. Recall that Matthew writes after the destruction of The Temple and the city of Jerusalem in the year 70 (Jesus died in 33!). Matthew s objection to the efforts of these leaders is focused on three things: hypocrisy, an almost impossible to follow interpretation of the laws for living (Torah) and the cultural drive to seek status. Matthew s Jesus acknowledges that the scribes know their material well (v.3). It is their actions that do not square up well although they have inherited the position of authority (v.2). These particular leaders apparently center themselves on strict observance of a narrow interpretation of the law, on literalness about ritual purity laws, 2 on tithing and Sabbath observance and on following precisely the 613 commandments of The Law. In direct contrast, Matthew puts it that Jesus burden is light! (11:30) Recall that an essential condition of achieving honor (status) is to have it publicly acknowledged. Jesus tells the disciples and the crowd: be countercultural, do not pursue broader phylacteries, 3 longer tassels or honorifics like rabbi, teacher, master or father; we are all brothers and sisters, all one family under one Father in fact, the greatest among you must be your servant and [w]hoever exalts himself will be humbled (cf. 18:1-4 about who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven). Go against what is embedded as appropriate behavior from childhood go against the culture, do not seek to enhance your status for we are all sisters and brothers. Does this give more shape to the oftheard term: Servant Leadership? 12 Saint Anne Church November 5, 2017 stannebarrington.org

13 Sharing the Living Story So What? (1) Is that last paragraph above what it is supposed to be like here, as well as in the kingdom of heaven? Or, is it just a case of doing a flip-flop, so that the one who was exalted is now on the bottom of the list and the one who was last is now first? (2) For us, as present day leaders: will we tie them up with heavy burdens on their consciences or will we humble ourselves, be their servants and share fully in the living of their lives physically, psychologically, spiritually? How about those of us who don t consider ourselves leaders? Stay tuned to the scripture, especially the gospels, over the next three Sundays; it s the end of this Liturgical Year A. Advent of Year B is upon us! 1 Scribes = professional lawyers versed in religious law and theology; Pharisees = pious laymen who banded together to live in strict observance of the Law and oral tradition. 2 more directed to the priestly class and not the common folk 3 Phylacteries = leather boxes containing passages from the Law (Torah, see Exodus 13:1-10 and 11-16; Deut 6:4-9 and 11:13-21) worn during prayer and alluding to keeping the Law before one s eyes and in one s heart so as to keep all of God s commands (Numbers 15:38-39; Deut 22:12). Tassels (totaling 613 threads and knots) hang at the corners of outer garments. Both signify being bound to the Law and point to inner disposition and are not meant to be ostentatious, attention getting. Saint Anne Church November 5, 2017 stannebarrington.org 13

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
