2 Saint Anne Church December 21, 2014 stannebarrington.org Christmas 2014 Dear People and Friends of Saint Anne Catholic Community, Welcome one and all to these days of Christmas feasting! I m sure you join us today after spending countless hours decorating your homes and trees with red and green, lights and glitter ensuring that there is plenty of good food and drink for your family celebrations perhaps you may be exhausted from the time spent on endless shopping for the gifts you offer your loved ones while staying up late into the night wrapping those very gifts and placing the name tags upon them for those who will receive them. These are many of all the Christmas action items and tasks that fill our days and will enable us to celebrate this great feast of Christmas with joy and merriment. But, I wonder if we were to take away all the work and efforts that go into our holiday celebrations, with what would we be left? We d be left with the reality of God s love flowing down from heaven into the world with a desire to take possession of all of creation and claim us as his own while living within us and among us. If we took away all the holiday hoopla, we would be left with the story of the Spirit of God claiming Mary s whole being, body and soul as the home of his only begotten son. We d be left with Jesus, claiming humankind as his own in his divinity and filling our hearts with his divine love. If we took away all the decorations and distractions of Christmas, we are left with God intent on sharing our life s journey of laughter and tears. Friends, in the birth of Jesus that we celebrate today, the Son of God, Jesus claims us all as his beloved ones and seeks to be born anew in our time and space, our nights and days, our hearts, our minds, our bodies in our imaginations, our desires and our dream for a better world for all. And most of all, Jesus wants us to welcome him into those places in our lives where we are wounded, selfish, ashamed, fearful, anxious or empty so that he might embrace us with his gifts of mercy, encouragement and forgiveness And so, on this day during this Christmas season will we welcome and invite Christ to claim our hearts? Will we yield to Jesus time, message and space in our everyday lives? Will we honor that place in our hearts where Jesus already lives and dwells within us? Jesus, who made his home in Mary s womb and the manger in Bethlehem, claimed also for himself our place on the cross, taking our sins upon himself so that we might be free to live in his peace. As a newborn child claims our attention, delight and affection, let us pray that the Christ child will find our hearts open that he might claim all of us as his beloved on this holy Christmas day. May the Lord, in surprising, healing, hope-filled, loving and inspiring ways, make his home in your heart and those you love anew on this Christmas Feast, moving you to proclaim with the angels: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth! In the name of our priests, parish staff and Parish Council members, we pray that all of you may know a heart filled with glory, love and joy on this Christmas Feast. Father Bernie Pietrzak, Pastor

Saint Anne Catholic Community LIVING CHRISTMAS GOSPEL CHRISTMAS EVE Children in kindergarten through fourth grade are invited to take part in the Living Gospel at the 2:30 p.m. Mass (only) on Christmas Eve. If your child would like to participate, they must attend the rehearsal on Tuesday, December 23rd, at 1:00 p.m., in the church. The rehearsal will last approximately one hour. It is important that your child attend the rehearsal as there is no time to provide direction to children who have not rehearsed prior to the beginning of Mass. The adult coordinators will need some help from parents for the rehearsal and prior to and during Mass. Please volunteer, if possible, to help them organize the children, costumes and movement for the Mass. The call time for the living gospel on Christmas Eve will be announced at the rehearsal. Plan to arrive early because parking will be at a premium. Again, if your child wants to take part, please bring them to the rehearsal, Tuesday, December 23rd, at 1:00 p.m. There is no need to sign up. For more information, contact Rory at rcooney@stannebarrington.org. THANK YOU! Parishioners Ed and Joan Covers have been supplying the Christmas trees that surround our manger at the Church entrance for over 30 years. Please be sure to thank them when you see them at Mass or over the holiday season at one of their Christmas tree lots either on Northwest Highway near the new ACE Hardware or on Rand Road near the Lake Zurich Movie Theatre. 4 Saint Anne Catholic Community REFLECTION We shall become Christians on that day when sunshine means more to us than a further acquisition. We shall become Christians on that day when the children of the world excite us at least as much as its rulers. We shall become Christians on that day when we use our hearts to measure the worth of a human being. We shall become Christians on that day when love leads us into friendships, not greed or pride. We shall become Christians when we are joyful because so many people are in love rather than because so many people are affluent. We shall become Christians when we learn to make love and peace, to make Jesus human and to make ourselves as human as he was. We shall become Christians when we allow Jesus to speak to us by his values as well as by his words. We shall become Christians on that morning when we laugh and sing for all the right reasons and when we weep, not because we have lost something but because we were given so much. May the joy, the peace and the light of this season fill you and your families with the hope of the Christmas season. Father Tom Bishop 4 Saint Anne Church December 21, 2014 stannebarrington.org

Human Concerns Posing with Santa by the tree SAINT ANNE SHARING BOARD ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR ST. MARTIN DE PORRES RESIDENTS AND CHILDREN The Sharing Board recently held their annual Christmas Party for the residents of St. Martin de Porres Women s Shelter. We started with some spirited singing of Christmas tunes by residents who are members of the Harmony, Hope and Healing Choir (check out the Parish website of some video of the singing). The children then shopped among donated items for a gift for their mothers. Those residents without children at the shelter were able to select a gift as well so that all of the women would have something to open Christmas morning. The children also worked on a craft: a holiday frame into which their photo was inserted. As always, the big hit with the residents was the pictures taken of the residents and children. They were so thrilled to be able to have beautiful prints that morning before we left! The morning ended with a pizza lunch topped off with Christmas cookies for all of the residents. Sharing Board members and their families were busy helping the children select gifts and complete their craft, wrapping, taking and developing the photos and serving lunch. It was a wonderful morning for all and truly captured the real meaning of Christmas! Thanks to Sandy Kraimer for organizing this successful event again this year. Thanks also to House of Hope for their generous donation of gift items. St. Martin de Porres House of Hope is a transitional shelter for women recovering from Making a photo frame addiction and their children and is located in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago. The Sharing Board is proud to support this successful ministry for women in need. The children played fun games with volunteers Addie Hirsch and Brian Guarnieri. Sharing Board members Peggy Hirsch, Kathy Pescheret, Holly Madden, Anne Guarnieri, Kathy Kraus, Mary DiGiulio and Sandy Kraimer. 12 Saint Anne Church December 21, 2014 stannebarrington.org

Saint Anne Catholic Community A CHRISTMAS PLEDGE I believe that Christmas is the joyful celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ; that it commemorates an event that happened in history; and that it celebrates the reality of Jesus Christ being born again in our lives and our time. Therefore, I commit myself to celebrate this in a way that is faithful to its true meaning. Jesus is a radically free person; He came to liberate others. Therefore: 1] I will examine my motives for celebrating Christmas. 2] I will not spend money just to impress others. 3] I will not engage in excess of eating, drinking, partying or anything that reduces the freedom of myself or others. Jesus respects all life; He came that we might have life in its fullness. Therefore: 1] I will give gifts and do activities only if they enhance life for myself and for others. 2] I will avoid gifts that are gadgets, made by complicated, energy-consuming processes that excessively pollute the environment. 3] I will choose gifts that rely on the involvement, energy and ingenuity of the recipient. Jesus cares about all people; He came to involve Himself with others. Therefore: 1] I will celebrate Christmas by sharing of myself more than of my property. 2] I will give gifts of service which involve my time, my work, my spoken and written words, my art, my song, my presence and other things that are not objects whenever possible. 3] I will use some of my time to visit family, friends and those who have less, hurt more and seem to have been forgotten. 4] I will choose gifts that involve me and/or the recipient in their creation and use. 14 Saint Anne Catholic Community YEAR END GIVING TO SAINT ANNE Qualified Retirement Accounts When naming a beneficiary of a qualified retirement account (IRA, 401(k), 403(b), etc.), a family member is typically the first option that comes to mind. However, such qualified plans are generally subject to estate taxes and income tax deferred, meaning that income tax is not paid until the retirement funds are distributed to you or you beneficiary. This taxation can make retirement assets among the most costly assets to distribute to loved ones. Because your estate may be subject to estate taxes and your beneficiary to income taxes, retirement assets make ideal gifts to tax-exempt charitable organizations such as Saint Anne Parish and/ or School. For example, if a $1,000,000 traditional IRA was left to an individual, the taxable decedent s estate may owe as much as 50% of the $1,000,000 in estate taxes, and the beneficiary would have to pay income taxes as high as 39.6% on the remaining IRA funds. Thus, $500,000 could be owed from the estate and $198,000 from the beneficiary for taxes, leaving only $302,000 available to the beneficiary. If Saint Anne is named the beneficiary of the $1,000,000 traditional IRA, we could utilize the full $1,000,000 of value and not pay any transfer taxes. In addition to the tax savings that can be taken by naming Saint Anne as the beneficiary, it is a great way to leave a lasting legacy. Stock Donations The big gains in the stock market combined with the tax law now in effect give you an opportunity to do some positive tax planning and to benefit charities with a donation before the end of the year. Let s make a case for donating appreciated stock to Saint Anne Parish and/or School. Consider that we have efficiently paid staff and hold our expenses in check with little change in controllable expenses year over year. Know that our Parish Leadership continues to seek out ways to enrich your spiritual development and enhance programs for the youth of the parish. We will make it easy for you but suggest you act before Christmas to give us time to execute the transaction and get you a dated confirmation. Just fill out the Stock Donation-Letter of Intent on the following page and send it to Greg Salm at the Archdiocese for processing. Please a copy of the letter to mbuckstaff@stannebarrington.org so she can ensure prompt notification that the stock was received. 14 Saint Anne Church December 21, 2014 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT, 2014 (11B) 1st Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 Psalm: 89: 2-3, 4-5, 27, 29. RX = Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. 2nd Reading: Romans 16:25-27 Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite below the text of the Lectionary or Bible. After three Sundays, we finally get a little mention about the baby Jesus: this last Sunday in Advent deals directly with the coming of Jesus as the Incarnate One. Mark, the Evangelist, on whom we focus this liturgical year, does not have an infancy narrative 1 so we have the account from Luke. We have listened to this story so many times, and the theology of the Incarnation (the word made flesh) has so long been a part of us that its impact is some times muted. Just imagine its effect in the culture in Mary s time. A clue to that setting is reflected in the following citations from the Hebrew scripture. Ancient Mediterranean peoples prescribed certain behaviors in order to preclude what they believed to be inevitable: the certainty that a male and a female left alone would engage in sexual joining. One such behavior was that brothers, fathers and husbands were to zealously guard and protect the women in their care. 2 Males would make certain that women would always be in the company of other women or of children younger than puberty. In a home, the proper place for an unmarried woman would be within any inner room sequestered from view by males on the outside. Now, picture this scene of Mary. A young unmarried (but betrothed) woman who is alone in the isolated inner sanctum of her home is accosted by an angel. To the Mediterranean mind, this intruder is very suspicious indeed. For a betrothed woman, the implications are sinister. Recall that betrothal involved both extended families and not just the two persons. It was arranged by the parents with less a view toward love and more with the intent to strengthen the social positions of the families. Betrothals lasted about a year and were just as binding as marriage; it could be dissolved only by formal divorce. In the law, there appears the strange phrase, a virgin who is a widow; if the betrothed male died, the woman would be considered a widow. Even today in Middle Eastern villages, the contract is negotiated by the mothers who make certain that the families are of equal status so that neither will have the advantage over the other. Ultimately, it is the patriarchs who ratify the contract; the honor status of both families is deeply involved. So it is a big deal. Imagine now, Mary s situation: it has great potential for loss of honor. If she really were pregnant, her male relatives would be shamed for not taking appropriate care of her; 3 both families would be shamed if, after the wedding night, she and Joseph could not produce the expected stained bedclothes as proof of virginity. 4 Another cultural note: In later periods, Mediterranean artists very often depict Mary with hands held up in a defensive posture, and the angel (usually male) is separated from Mary by a solid physical barrier like 16 Saint Anne Saint Church Anne Church August December 31, , stannebarrington.org 2014 stannebarrington.org CONTINUED ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE

Sharing the Living Story a doorway or a prie-dieu. Both suggest that honor is being upheld. Luke further upholds Mary s honor by showing that the angel acknowledged her status: Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. Note that despite all the assurances that the angel (God s messenger) gives to Mary, and to the hearers of these words (do not be afraid you have found favor He will be great Son of the Most High ). Luke nevertheless shows Mary as being appropriately concerned with her honor; not really hearing God s messenger, she insists: How can this be, since I am a virgin? Such implications for her betrothal! 5 To the person of faith (solidarity with God), the answer is simple: nothing will be impossible for God. To the Mediterranean ear, it is God who will play the traditional role of husband. God will empower Mary and uphold her status ( the Holy spirit will come upon you) as well as protect her (the power of the Most High will overshadow you ). Empower, uphold, protect these are precisely the duties of a Middle Eastern husband. As further proof that God will care for all things ( nothing will be impossible...), the angel astounds Mary with the news that her cousin, barren and old-aged Elizabeth, is six months pregnant! Now, really very perplexed, Mary can only say, o.k. o.k., so be it! Note the connection to the pericope from 2 Samuel (the First Reading), especially verses 5b-11. (5b) Thus says the lord: Should you build me a house to dwell in? (my underlines) It was I (v.8) through intervening verses including to I will give you rest (v.11b). God promises even more: The Lord will establish a house for you. (11c and ff.) And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors (see v.12 and ff. through v.16), Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever (v.16). David speculates that he might make a more permanent building for the Ark 6, but he is shown that there is much more beyond the Covenant: (v.12b) I will raise up your heir I will be a father to him Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me Mary, like David, discovers that there is more to this God of her ancestors than has been thus far revealed, much more is built than what is seen not only things unseen but things unexpected and seemingly impossible, for nothing will be impossible for God. So What? nothing will be impossible for God. (Luke 1:37, but ponder vv.36-38) Have you ever wondered how to explain an unexplainable happenstance in your life? 1 Luke and Matthew are the only two infancy narratives found among the 27 books of the New Testament. Luke has the more elaborate description of wondrous events surrounding the birth of The Christ child. 2 See the very revealing list at Sirach 26: Sirach 42:9-14; note the range of concern! 4 Deuteronomy 22:13-21; note the extreme penalty on the woman if she is not a virgin. 5 See Numbers 5:11-31 where the verses show what great turmoil is in store for both families. Little wonder that in the other Infancy Narrative (Matthew 1:18) Joseph divorces Mary quietly lest the public exposure culminates in her being stoned; he does this even while he divorces her to uphold his own honor. 6 Israelite tradition holds that The Ark contains 2 tablets of stone upon which the Covenant made at Mt. Sinai between God and the Israelites is recorded by Moses. Works consulted: John J. Pilch, The Cultural World of Jesus, Cycle B and John L. McKenzie, SJ, Dictionary of the Bible. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at where all scheduling is done. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the GIFT office at with questions. Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call Reconciliation: Saturdays ₉:₁₅ a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
