2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig ENCOURAGEMENT St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the God of all who encourages us so that we might be able to encourage those who are in any affliction with the encouragement with which we are ourselves are encouraged by God. Notice, that Paul, in this short passage, uses the term encourage four times. It must be an important concept for him. It certainly is an important one throughout Scripture. And it should definitely be for us! However, when life is tiring, when we are struggling, when our future is insecure, it is easy to become discouraged or to overlook and disregard the encouragement of God and others in our lives. Discouragement can creep up upon us all, and we can become blind to the abundant comfort God offers us. The result: we harbor ingratitude for the blessings of yesterday, indifference to the opportunities of today and insecurity regarding our strength for tomorrow. In quoting this passage of Paul, we are reminded that Christ is our encouragement and offers us hope and peace in the knowledge that the Lord knows our troubles and has great concern for us. Over 50 years ago, on June 18th, a freak accident occurred on a lake in New York. A speeding motorboat bounced on a wave and shot two passengers into the water a 50-year-old man with a navigation career and a little girl. To keep the girl from drowning, the man held her head above the water while the boat circled back. They rescued the girl but the man, though experienced in his job on the waters, sank and drowned. Time Magazine wrote an article on him at the time of this tragedy. He lived to save others. His death was just the way he would have planned it! His obituary read: always lifting someone up! He spent his life always trying to lift people up. Would that be our legacy? Paul talks in Corinthians about the power of encouragement. The Greek translation of encouragement was to call to one s side, to comfort, to console, to strengthen, to inspire another with courage. The Greek word for encourage is the same one used for the name of Comforter in reference to the Holy Spirit. So when we encourage others, we show that the Spirit really dwells among us, and it is the Spirit working in and through us. Max Lucado, author, speaker and artist, tells about his trip to the United Kingdom. A castle stood in the center of a huge garden, and in the garden was a maze row after row of high hedges with one dead end leading to another. If you were successful in navigating the labyrinth, you would reach the small door to the tall castle tower. When Max became lost in the maze, he heard his daughter call down to him, You ll be okay. Just back up and turn right. She was above in the tower with a better vantage point than he had. Words of encouragement, he says, pointing out the power we have to encourage and guide another s direction. He tells his audiences that we can speak encouraging words that make people better and stronger in many ways. A while back, a daily paper contained strong comments suggesting that there is far too much negativity in our world today, and it is in our power to counteract this situation. The writing was built on the premise that throughout our world, there is a whirlwind of life, trials and triumphs spinning so fast that you forget what day it is, and you can tend to forget the humanity of those closest to you everyone becomes a means to an end. The author asked the question: What if, as Christians, we just took a break from that and tried to lift each other up? There are, thankfully, some ways we might accomplish this. First, we need to express our thankfulness to others more frequently for good service, for assistance given to us, for co-workers, for little kindnesses, for anyone who has been a positive factor in our daily lives. Encouragement is saying with love what a person needs to hear when he or she needs to hear it. Second, we need to make a personal investment in the interests and values of our friends, acquaintances and our loved ones more deliberately. By doing this, we tell them that what they value matters to us as much as what we value ourselves. Third, we need to listen better to the concerns and hardships of others and convince them that we really care. Give them our time to problem solve with them, laugh with them, weep with them. Listen to them! It is important that we take to heart the words of St. Paul. As we live in the strength of God s encouragement, may we also be that comfort and support for our brothers and sisters. Let us allow God s Spirit, his presence and love flow through us and wash encouragement over those around us as we try to be God s hands and feet in this world. Maya Angelou said it so well. People may forget what you said, people may forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel! That s our job to be that encouragement for the world! 2 Saint Anne Church February 3, 2019 stannebarrington.org

THANK YOU FROM SISTER LAURETTA I feel so blessed in having so many caring and supportive friends at Saint Anne surrounding me at this time. The beautiful cards, thoughtful messages, phone calls, prayers and gift of Masses lightened the loss and reminded me of the special person Sister Anna Marie was to so many of you. I am deeply grateful to the many generous people who visited her during her illness, provided food and were ready to help us in countless ways in the last few months. My thanks to our priests, Fathers Bernie, Joji and Chris, who concelebrated her funeral Mass in Milwaukee and the Memorial Mass here at Saint Anne. A word of appreciation goes to those who inspired us with beautiful music and the Women s Club who served hospitality so graciously as well as all who came to honor Sister at both beautiful celebrations. Finally, I pray that the love and genuine kindness I have experienced will continue to be the hallmark of the people of Saint Anne. Sister Anna Marie is now at peace and resting in the arms of the God she loved and served so faithfully. Always ready to serve you while here on earth, she is now, through her intercession, ready to intercede for each of you in heaven. Some parishioners have mentioned that they have not been receiving notices of upcoming payments for Legacy of Faith pledges, and we are working with the Archdiocese campaign administration office to improve the process. Please note that unless a donor is fulfilling his or her pledge with automatic payments on GiveCentral, the donor should be receiving paper reminders of payments in accordance with the schedule specified by the donor. Some donors making these automatic payments may have received paper notices in the past, but will not receive them going forward. If you have a question about a notice of payment, a tax receipt for a gift made in 2018, a campaign project or any other matter relating to Legacy of Faith, please contact Andrea Wirt, Campaign Coordinator, at or LegacyofFaith@stannebarrington.org. Thank you for your generosity! Saint Anne Church February 3, 2019 stannebarrington.org 3

11 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS ONE START TIME, ONE CAMPUS, ONE SOLUTION Kindergarten For a Day Preschool students who are part of Saint Anne Parish School and the surrounding area preschools were invited to spend a morning shadowing in kindergarten! We began our morning with an interactive read aloud where we talked about all the excitement that kindergarten brings! Following the read aloud, the kindergarteners showed the younger students the ropes in our classroom by engaging with them in creating a mosaic cross craft. The younger kiddos then had the opportunity to explore all the different centers in kindergarten, including clay, Math manipulatives and the sensory table. While the students were enjoying the classroom, their parents were invited to a presentation that dove into the kindergarten curriculum. It was such a fun day! 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR 2019 (72C) 1st Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-5, Psalm 71: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15, 17 Rx = I will sing of your salvation. 2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 Gospel: Luke 4:21-30 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite below verses from the Lectionary or the Bible. It is no wonder that the prophet Jeremiah needs to be affirmed that he is indeed favored by God to call the people back to fidelity to the covenant with God, back to cohesive unity among themselves as Chosen People, centered once more in Jerusalem, restored once more to its land. To be such a prophet requires courage to face opposition: from those who are living somewhat well after having adapted to the circumstances of their exile outside their ancestral land; from those civil and religious leaders who have capitulated to their oppressors in order to retain what little power they were allowed. The prophet also faced stiff opposition from the Babylonians, one of the nations who would conquer the Chosen and disperse them into exile. Yet, these nations, these pagans, these outgroup people will witness the restoration of the Chosen to be brought about by their God, the God of Israel. At v.18, God names Jeremiah with phrases usually associated with the strength that is the city of Jerusalem. In response to the assurance at v.19, we can only join in the psalmist s song of praise to God in the Psalm refrain: I will sing of your salvation. In the gospel passages for last Sunday and today, Luke describes the beginning of Jesus ministry with language that evokes that which Jesus will speak at the end of this first book by Luke: rejection by the nations as well as by Jesus own group, which results in his physical death. Jesus faced opposition from the beginning but like Jeremiah, he never ceased proclaiming God s justice and, as a faithful Judean (Jew), would obviously join in singing today s psalm verses in praise of God. From the development of this gospel narrative, such vehement rejection as at vv seems unlikely until one recalls the cultural values of honor/shame. Honor is the public claim to worth, to stature, to status, and must include the accompanying public acknowledgment of that claim by others. There are two types: Ascribed and Acquired honor. Ascribed or inherited honor comes from endowment by a person of power, or by being born of a particular set of parents. No one is expected to rise above their station, to improve on their lot prescribed by heritage; hence, despite their praise at v.22, they say at its end: isn t this Joe s kid, he sure ain t acting like a carpenter! In addition, a person must carefully safeguard this inherited honor or risk loss of honor for the whole kin group. Luke tells that Jesus breaks the cultural convention. He does not remain as a dutiful son of Joseph, that is, as a carpenter. In breaking out of this circumscribed role, he brings dishonor to the family; hence, the amazement at v.22b. At v.18, (last week) Jesus compounds this by ascribing honor to himself in quoting Isaiah 61:1-2 and also by claiming honor by saying that today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing (v.21). Jesus claims a status for himself way out of the 16 Saint Anne Church February 3, 2019 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story bounds that his family s stature allows. He admits (claims) ownership of the ability to heal (vv.24-27). Every public claim to honor elicits a challenge. Despite the fact that such ability would be welcomed in the culture that was powerless in the face of illness, Jesus is challenged on the fact that he did not take care of his own first (a cultural requirement even in those times). The really insupportable and unforgivable claim, however, is Jesus likening himself to the prophets Elijah and Elisha; a rather high claim to honor way beyond his status. But there is more! Jesus takes these two incidents, minor in the history and remembrance of Israel and makes them his central message. At vv.25-27, he reminds them that God had preferentially cured the out-group, the pagans! It is no wonder that they immediately sought to kill him. For us moderns, all this business of honor/shame might seem to diminish the stature of Jesus as we view him with our post-resurrection eyes. Hidden within this struggle that Luke describes to his community is the salient fact that he portrays Jesus as once again calling attention to the reader that the God of Israel is a God who is inclusive a God who bestows gifts on all, rather than confining them to some who are chosen preferentially because of the status that the particular culture recognizes. In the Second Reading, Paul uses many poetic, eloquent, evocative words to claim that the greatest of all the gifts of God is love. How often have couples chosen these words to be used when they marry! Read them; what do they invoke in you? All this explanation, So What? Luke shows Jesus tearing down the walls of division which cultures have set up; what are the implications for us today? For example, is it folly to even think that God s justice can be sought in today s climate where there are people who walk into the midst of their targets to blow them and themselves to oblivion? Can God s justice be sought where nations deny admittance to an entire ethnic-religious-cultural group based on a fear of possible terrorist activity? Perhaps there are no easy answers here. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
